Selvittelin hieman lisää yhdistysasioita. Ulkopuolisia ei-jäsenten rahalahjoituksia ei voida kerätä jatkossakaan. Eli kaikki mementomori.socialin palvelinkulut pyritään tulevaisuudessa kattamaan jäsenmaksuilla/jäsenyyksillä. Syitä tähän on muutama:

4. Pienkeräys maksaa 120 euroa 3 kuukauden välein. Matalampi kynnys saada, mutta samat haasteet: kustannukset ja pankkitilivaatimus. Lahjoitusnappi ei silti käy, koska voidaan tulkita jatkuvaksi. "Jos suunnittelet jatkuvaluonteista rahankeräystä, hae toimintaa varten lupa."
Meillä on voittoa tavoittelematon yhdistys, jonka kulut pyritään pitämään nollissa. On aivan posketonta, että pitäisi maksaa satoja euroja pankkitilistä ja luvista ennen kuin pääsee edes ottamaan vastaan lahjoituksia.
Yrittäminen ja yhdistystoiminta ja muutenkin kaikki hyvä ja järkevä tekeminen on tehty Suomessa ihan helvetin vaikeaksi. Suomessa ihminen maksaa mielellään 100 euroa siitä, että naapuri ei saa 10 euroa, koska kuitenkin se kusettaa ja viilaa linssiin.
Toivomme siis paljon jäseniä ja pyrimme tekemään jäseneksi liittymisen äärimmäisen helpoksi.

Kiitos hyvästä vastauksesta. Mukavaa keskustella tästä näin, vaikka ollaan täysin eri linjoilla.
Pointtisi kehitysresursseista mielestäni hieman ontuu. Ensinnäkin avoimen lähdekoodin mallit (esim. jaossa https://huggingface.co ja https://ollama.com) ovat käytännössä aika normielämää devaajilla ja pääsevät kaupallisten mallien tasolle, jos vaan kotoa löytyy tarpeeksi tehokasta laitteistoa (tähän varmaan viittasitkin). Haluan kuitenkin mainita, että DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral ja Llama kilpailevat suoraan OpenAI:n ja Anthropicin kanssa aivan samoilla laskentatehoilla, eikä enää vaadita perus pöytäkonetta kummempaa, itselläkin aika vaatimaton yhden RTX-näytönohjaimen kokoonpano (8GB VRAM). DeepSeekin R1 nimenomaan muutti oletuksen siitä, että kilpailukykyinen malli vaatisi satojen miljoonien budjetin tai jäätävän määrän rahaa tai supertietokoneita. Samoin esim. suomessa TurkuNLP:n avoin kielimalli Poro, joka itselläkin kotikoneellani ajossa. Avoimen lähdekoodin itseisarvo ei ole kiinni siitä miten se on tuotettu avoimeksi tai mitä pyörittäminen vaatii.
Mitä olet mieltä esimerkiksi automaatiosta, jossa on mukana vaikkapa editointietäisyyksiä (Levenshtein), säännöllisiä lausekkeita ja vastaavia perinteisiä algoritmeja, jotka tekevät saman asian kuin GenAI täysin ilman tekoälyä? Itse esimerkiksi olen pari vuosikymmentä tehnyt bash-ohjelmointia, nyt AI helpottaa, parantaa ja tehostaa vanhaa automatisointia.
Iso osa markkinoinnista tosin pyrkii myymään raskasta generatiivista ratkaisua tehtäviin, jotka on jo ratkaistu ysäriltä asti ilman AI:ta ja tässä onkin eittämättä ongelma niin luonnonvarojen kuin resurssioptimoinninkin näkökulmasta, hakataan ikäänkuin kaivinkoneella naulaa kiinni lautaan. Mutta AI:ssa parasta onkin se että työkalulla voi rakentaa työkaluja tai itseään, tämä ei aiemmin ollut mahdollista.

What many people misunderstand about hosting your own content (like this social media instance) is thinking we somehow NEED a big audience or Big Tech involvement.
I'm perfectly fine if the world faded away and it was just the thousand of us here. It's like the early days of the web when we had small forums, nobody missed Reddit back then. Federation is a big plus, not a requirement.
It's the same with websites or IRC for me. I know people use Discord, but I still stick to IRC even if there are only about a hundred of us left. I know people use AI now and website visitors are dropping, but who cares? I still keep doing it for those who like to read.
I don't need the whole world involved for this to feel worthwhile. It's mine, I own it, and I host it for as long as I breathe. After that, it won't matter to me anymore, but I hope other admins keep things running the way I did.

Yes! It's all CSS variables, override the background tokens, easiest via Custom CSS, pasted after the Bird UI CSS so it wins). The main one is --color-bg-primary (the page and columns). For a fully black UI, also set the other neutral surfaces:

Tip: the "accessible" variant already ships a black background (--color-bg-primary: #000), so it's a good reference if you want to see which tokens go dark.

A small request for everyone using Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0, no matter how you installed it: if something looks broken or off, please report it along with your version details (which Mastodon version you are running, which version of Mastodon Bird UI you built, and how you built it, Custom CSS or SCSS in your Mastodon fork).
Several post-launch fixes have already been made thanks to people reporting issues, and I can only fix what I know about. Bug reports genuinely make the theme better for everyone: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues
For example, I just fixed a bug where the profile description lost the spacing below it (no margin after the bio). If you noticed that, grab the latest 4.0.0 and it’s fixed.

Quick heads-up for Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0 Custom CSS users: I noticed that the build was only compiling the main mastodon-bird-ui.css file, which left the variant files (light, stars, accessible, accessible-plus) outdated, and the light version wasn't compiling at all. It's now fixed, and all five files are rebuilt and up to date in 4.0.0. I personally use a Mastodon fork with SCSS, so I accidentally overlooked this.
If you're using one of the variants through Custom CSS, re-copy it from dist/: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/tree/main/dist
If you're using the plain mastodon-bird-ui.css, it was always fine and needs no changes. Sorry for the mix-up!

I create a lot, every single day. Lately, I've noticed it's sometimes hard for me to release things as open source. Almost everything I do is meant for the common good, but every now and then I get hit with a wave of anxiety. It goes back to at least three times in the past when I shared something with good intentions and ended up facing a public hate campaign for it. When you've been burned a few times, it's only natural to hesitate before putting your hand back in the fire.
I start to question things - is privacy handled properly, is my vision right, what if people reject it, what will they think about AI being involved... The more doubts I have, the less I feel like publishing my private repo. It's ironic because I've even given lectures on open source, yet I completely understand why some people fear it. It's not always fun. In fact, it can feel like putting yourself on display for judgment.
I'm learning to take it easier, reminding myself that I don't have to release everything. I don't need to explain myself all the time. I'm allowed to keep a few gems just for myself.

Mementomori.social experienced 57 minutes of downtime earlier today. Here's what happened and what we've done about it.
What happened: A large volume of connections from external crawler/bot IP ranges accumulated in a stuck state (CLOSE_WAIT) inside our web server (nginx). These zombie connections exhausted nginx's connection pool and connections per worker, which caused it to stop accepting new connections entirely resulting in ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED for everyone trying to reach the site.
Why it took 57 minutes: The sole admin available (me) was in a meeting when the issue began, and other admins were unavailable. There was no automated recovery in place to detect and resolve this type of failure.
How it was resolved: Nginx was restarted, which cleared all stale connections and immediately restored service.
What we've done to prevent this:
- Installed and configured Monit, a process monitoring tool that automatically checks all critical services (web, background workers, streaming, database, cache, and nginx) every 2 minutes and restarts them if they become unresponsive
- This means similar outages should now self-heal within minutes, even when no admin is available
I'm really sorry for the disruption. We take the reliability of this instance seriously, and this change should make a real difference moving forward. I'm also planning to apply other mitigations, as some parts of our instance may have been underconfigured.

Hyvä näkökulma tekoälystä myös. Tekoälyä vihataan de facto, mutta siitä on paljon hyötyä ihmisille, joilla ei ole luontaista pääsyä informaation piiriin. Tekoälyllä voi parantaa saavutettavuutta huomattavasti.

TikTok getting MAGA spawns new social media services.
UpScrolled is apparently built from scratch as a centralized platform, not based on ActivityPub or ATProto. They explicitly state that current decentralized protocols don't deliver what they need for a video-forward app, whatever that means. It's run by Palestinian-Australian developer Issam Hijazi with support from the Tech for Palestine incubator, launched in June 2025. Positioned as an Instagram and TikTok alternative without shadowbanning, with chronological feeds.
UpScrolled saw a massive surge after TikTok's US ownership restructure in January 2026, when Oracle and other US investors took controlling stake while ByteDance retained only 19.9%. Some users accused TikTok of censoring posts critical of ICE under the new ownership, which drove people to alternatives.
Monnett is also built from scratch, centralized, with no federation. Run by Monnet Social SA based in Luxembourg, founded in 2024 by a team of European technologists and activists. It's their answer to surveillance capitalism, GDPR-compliant, hosted in Germany, with user-controlled algorithm sliders and no psychological profiling. Basically the European sovereignty play.
W is the newest one, announced at Davos just days ago. Another centralized platform built from scratch, run by Anna Zeiter, former eBay chief privacy officer. It's legally a subsidiary of We Don't Have Time, a Swedish climate activist organization backed by IKEA, Volvo, Unilever, WWF, and Salesforce. The advisory board includes former German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler and Club of Rome chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève. Requires identity verification with photo and ID to combat bots. European-hosted data only.
The name of W supposedly stands for "We" with two hidden V's for "Values" and "Verified" - and they cheerfully admit that W coming before X in the alphabet is "a welcome coincidence". Beta in February, public launch late 2026. Zeiter said the platform would already count as a success if "political Brussels" posts on W instead of X.
So all three are new walled gardens with different policies and ownership, but none contribute to the Fediverse, ActivityPub or ATProto.
Makes me want to shout, "Hey, look here, we're here!". But nobody listens.

Kävin noin 30 muistiinpanosovellusta läpi paro vuotta sitten. Simplenotea käytin 15+ vuotta mutta muotoilujen puuttuminen ja tietoturva harmitti. Sen jälkeen käytin Craftia vuoden ja tämän jälkeen jäin Obsidianiin. Obsidianissa on paras muokattavuus, datan voi omistaa 100% ja virallinen sync toimii hyvin.

Meillä on käytössä uusin Mastodon core, eikä ole tullut muutoksia linkkiprevikkoihin. Eli sama pohjakoodi näiden osalta kuin mastodon.social:ssa. Se miksi muualla toimii samat linkit voi tosiaan johtua siitä että sillä avaus/postaushetkellä on haettu toimiva previkka Hardcoverista kun taas meidän palvelimella hakuhetkellä ei ole toiminut Hardcoverin puolella.

Tämä riippuu aina linkattavasta palvelusta. Vaikuttaa siltä että Hardcoverissa on jotain ongelmia, kun ei aina näytä kuvaa. Kokeile esim. https://orcascan.com/tools/open-graph-validator eri urleja (näitä skannereita löytyy netistä kun hakee og image debugger tai og graph validator). Metan scanner hakee kuva nyt, mutta näytti ensin virhettä. Jos virhe tapahtuu linkkaushetkellä etäpalvelimella, Mastodon välimuistittaa sen "ei-näkyvän" previkan...
Tähän on vähän huono vaikuttaa, kun previkkaa ei haeta enää uudestaan myöhemmin. Sama ongelma on kaikissa muissakin somepalveluissa, eli jos palvelin ei palauta og-tageja oikein tai on hidastetta tai muuta jumia, niin previkka ei näy - tämä jää sitten cacheen.
Esimerkknä, kun laitan oman get-parametrin, previkka haetaan uudestaan (jos Hardcoverin palvelin siis tomii oikein), esim "&previkkatest123" perään: /books/the-nesting/reviews/@asta?referrer_id=34098&previkkatest123
Olen havainnut, että Hardcoverilla on välillä jumittelua ja hidastelua. Sekin voi aiheuttaa tätä.

Yeah the UI a bit clumsy, but once you get a hang of it, it's great. I don't know if you can edit routes, I haven't tried that. I just map my routes in CityStrides or Squadrats and import them to WorkOutDoors.

WorkOurDoors. It's amazing, works offline, too. I can plan my routes in CityStrides or Squadrats, save a GPX, transfer it to the watch and it go. It talks to my AirPods and tells me when to turn etc.

There shouldn't be any technical downsides, it's just text. The limits are completely artificial. As far as I know, it could even be 99 999 characters. I've heard that the academic instance qoto.org allows 65 535 (64k) characters.
"Why then are higher character limits not more widely adopted?"
I think someone from the Mastodon GmbH decided that 500 is a good standard for a microblogging platform so it wouldn't become a full blogging platform. Also, admins generally prefer not to fork or modify their instance, they like sticking close to the main core code.
I haven't looked into any behavior data, so this is just guesswork: from what I've seen, people still keep their posts relatively short, I'd say the average on our instance is around 300-600 characters.

No apologies needed, great question.
Honestly, because I like to write and not limit myself. I also dislike threading; I never write them. I enjoy writing and reading. And, simply, because I can.
I've always kind of disliked Twitter's original 140-character limit, I think it came from SMS restrictions back in 2006. People used to say it was great because it forced brevity and creativity, but I always found it frustrating to chop my messages into pieces. I like to write full thoughts, like blog posts, and make my case properly. I was glad when they extended it to 160 and finally 280. Mastodon's default 500 was an improvement, but still not enough.
There are really no downsides. Clients show a "read more" option anyway, so readers can choose whether or not to expand long posts.

Since I'll have Batocera as another bootable distro on my PC, I can actually mount the Batocera drives on my Arch system and configure everything there directly, then just boot into it and play. Of course, I can always use my laptop or phone via SSH too. None of this is tricky for me as a sysop. ✌️

As a weekend project, I'm going to install a fourth Linux distro on my desktop PC to get some gaming going! Batocera is a Linux distro that supports over 220 gaming platforms and consoles, including MS-DOS, PS1-PS4, and various controllers directly.
I've built a couple of custom handheld consoles for retro gaming using RetroArch and EmulationStation, and we have an arcade machine with a JAMMA circuit board at the office, but I haven't tried Batocera before. Let the games begin!

You could add mementomori-social/mastodon as one of the remotes and switch back and forth anytime. Just keep in mind that we're running an alpha version, and the database structure might be different, so there could be breaking changes. Ah, sitten siinä on latenssiongelmia, koska palvelin on niin kaukana Suomesta. Voi olla myös tosiaan skaalattu tehoja alaspäin rahoituksen puutteesta. Meillä palvelin on Helsingissä ja pyörii nopeassa Hetznerin datasalissa ja tehoja riittää, pitäisi toimia yhtä hyvin miltä tahansa pallonpuoliskolta.

A video call with @npub142s…7vde on Thursday afternoon and especially the question about being social and contributing to open source really got me thinking. He asked something along the lines of whether I get contributions or invite people to collaborate. I have some repos with hundreds or even thousands of stars, and I get plenty of issues, ideas, and pull requests, but I never actually invite people to contribute. As I told Jos, I'm kind of a lone wolf.
It’s funny to say that, because objectively, I'm very active on social media. I post multiple times a day and chat with people around the world all the time. But in real life, I know very few people. I don't have friends I hang out with, and I struggle with social phobia. Maybe that's why I'm so active online, because here, I don't have that fear.
I should probably invite people to code with me more. I've created tools, plugins, and themes for Mastodon, WordPress, Obsidian, you name it. But I just code on my own and hope someone else enjoys what I make. I can really relate to Linus Torvalds, he built something for himself, and it blew up. I get that feeling.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this post is, other than to say that I'm social online, but not so much in real life. I should probably learn to invite people into my life more. I never even ask a friend to go somewhere with me, the thought alone scares me. So maybe I should invite other people to do that more, invite me, or something. That's what my therapist has been trying to tell me, at least.

"Only a handful"? As far as I know, there are tens of thousands of instances in the Fediverse. You can host your own server on the Fediverse with a Raspberry Pi if you want, or you can start a WordPress blog anywhere and use that. Or you can start using Ghost or Writefreely without any technical knowledge. The same definitely doesn't apply to Bluesky.

Thr problem is they wanted their own from the begin with, to control. They claim that Fediverse and ActivityPub community have been "suspicious" towards them, but also "it’d have been a difficult collaboration if we chose to use AP, especially since we weren’t willing to compromise on some of the decisions". I see it they never even wanted to try.

It's not just populism when it comes to self-hosting and independence. The amount of data in the Fediverse is huge, yet you can still host everything from a USB stick if you want to (need S3 or NAS for storage, but anyway, it's simple).
I see Bluesky as false marketing in many ways. Decentralization, by definition, should mean as much as possible. We all know what happens when Cloudflare or AWS goes down - that's not decentralization if only a handful of large services exist. So I completely disagree with the idea that "a few is enough".
