I don't know about “best” for gaming, but I've playing both Steam and non-Steam games on Debian since forever. Steam does a pretty good job at providing extended compatibility thanks to its Linux runtimes that ship with older libraries for compatibility with older games, although I've rarely seen games fail for that reason outside of Steam (although it does happen).

customer trust is an extremely important point, and I would add to that another one: Valve doesn't even need the Frame itself to succeed. One of the things that Valve can afford to do and Meta cannot is “iterative improvements”. If you look at the history of the Valve hardware programs, the takeaway is that they don´t actually need to succeed as long as they're a meaningful increment and an experience Valve can learn from. Benefits of being privately own, I guess?

One thing I would like to add to this second part is a directory of interesting #indieWeb examples of XSLT usage. Suggestions welcome.

#Apple is no better than #Google at stewarding the #openWeb. #Mozilla has abundantly shown in the last years that they are just controlled opposition, and the amount of their allegedly restricted resources they waste on invasive features nobody wants shows that they can't be trusted in any way to defend the users' interest. Currently, their only redeeming quality is that they haven't removed support for uBlock Origin and other #adblockers from their browsers —a meager point.

2025-11-08 07:48:58 GMT

- reply

#Chrome's deprecation of #XSLT is just the next step in the decade-long efforts by #Google to kill an open, independent web (reminder that I've collected some of that history here <https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/>). The #WebKit developers at #Apple or the prone #Mozilla developers agreeing on this choice detracts nothing from the argument.

2025-11-08 07:45:47 GMT

- reply

There's an older parallel here for when #Mozilla helped #Google in their path to kill #RSS (note that this #XSLT is *also* about that) by removing the Live Bookmark feature. At the time, the excuse was that the implementation was incompatible with some important code changes that were happening at the same time, but the fact that support could be trivially brought in via extension showed that the issue there wasn't technical, but a matter of intent.

2025-11-08 07:43:53 GMT

- reply

Note that the #Chrome team could trivially ship the polyfill itself and nobody would have even _cared_ about the change in the way #XSLT support was implemented in browser. This would have completely solved the “security” issue due to #Google leeching on a #FLOSS libraries without giving back. The fact that they haven't shows that the security issues in the libraries are just an excuse.
Any comment on this, @npub1gns…7sg5 ?

2025-11-08 07:15:45 GMT

- reply

Do not install the polyfill. Do not change your XML files to load it. Instead, flood their issue tracker with requests to bring back in-browser XSLT‌ support. Report failed support for XSLT as a broken in browsers, because this is not a website issue.

This is a trillion-dollar company abusing their power to control the open web, and one it's catastrophic how even among the purported supporters of an open web there are people stanning for this choice because of their personal dislike of the piece of tech being forcefully obsoleted on false and flimsy premises.

DO NOT COMPLY.
#Google is moving forward with its removal of #XSLT support instead of fixing their library and/or adopting a library that supports a more modern version of the XSLT standard.
The dishonest and incomplete reporting on their developer page omits any explanation on why they have not pursued the corect course of action, and is instead dumping on users and developers the task of compensating for the Chrome team choices:

I intentionally split at spaces because to detect which entry prevents the column from getting smaller, I have to look at any consecutive non-breakable substring. Admittedly this doesn't tell me which entries, though. Probably something like find | grep -E '\S{30)' would be better

2025-08-15 06:10:48 GMT

- reply

that's a pretty interesting way to approach the problem. I went with:
find -maxdepth 1 | tr ' ' '\n' | awk '{ print length($0) }' | sort -n | uniq -c
and this gives me the length of all space-separated substrings. Some interesting results there, including one which is 60 characters long!
I think I'll keep the overflow-wrap solution, but I should probably address these long names too 8-D

2025-08-14 13:10:29 GMT

- reply

Solved by setting the name column to
overlay-wrap: anywhere
Still wraps correctly in most cases, but it's managing to wrap whatever was preventing it earlier.

2025-08-14 10:41:24 GMT

- reply

The culprit is most likely a file or directory name that the layout engine thinks it cannot be wrapped better, but with thousands of entries it's hard to understand which one and why.

2025-08-14 10:40:34 GMT

I have a weird #webDev question #askFedi
I'm customizing the Apache directory index in XHTML mode (so no hard styling). The table is set to width: 100% with some padding via CSS. When I restrict the horizontal space below 825px, though, the central (Name) column doesn't shrink anymore, as if there was something preventing it from wrapping text more than it has, so the table overflows. Only happens in some directories. How do I find what's preventing the shrink/wrap?

since there's a trivial solution to not seeing them in one's timeline again, by unfollowing said poster/booster or by filtering out the relevant hashtags.
So it's not spam that gets pushed to your inbox against your will, it's not something you're under any obligation to answer to in any shape and form, and you dictating what others should or should not post about or how makes you appear as a pretentious gatekeeper of how others should use social media.
3/n

2025-07-07 19:18:43 GMT

- reply

And if this is not the case, then random people making queries about anything on social media not only is in no way equivalent to spam, but it's not something you (or anyone) would normally come across unless they either follow someone who makes a lot of said queries or boosts said queries, or follow one of the hashtags typically associated with said queries. IOW, one would have to intentionally go look for them, which is the completely opposite of spam

2025-07-07 19:17:06 GMT

- reply

no, I'm asking what this has to do with social media queries in any way.
The only case in which a social media query could be equiparable to spam is if it was addressed to you specifically, which was never mentioned as being the case in this thread. In fact, when I expressely excluded this particular case from my discussion, you just skimmed over it, so it's assumed that this is NOT the case.

how the fsck do you get to an analogy between social media queries and spam? is any content you don't like in social media spam?
I haven't addressed it because it's irrelevant to the discussion. But if you really want to insist on that point, then you should be aware that just providing a link to support a statement does absolutely nothing to support the truth or validity of that statement, it just shifts the authority.

2025-07-07 18:08:12 GMT

- reply

again, disagree. The answer to this “problem”, which is only a problem for you (and anyone who feels the same way) is for you (and anyone who feels the same way) to not answer social media queries.
It's not an indictment of social media queries (and answers) in general, it's your personal perception of them, which is trivially avoided ignoring them, which is to the benefit of both you and to anyone who actually enjoys participating in the discussions that may arise from one.

2025-07-07 17:18:15 GMT

- reply

I'll say even more: replying to somebody's social media query with a Googled answer is not only a waste of your time, but even disrespectful to the poster. If you don't know the answer to the query, you can just not answer.
2/2

2025-07-07 17:16:50 GMT

- reply

hard disagree. When answering a “social media query” you do not *need* to validate it. If you can provide a link in support to your answer, that's a nice plus, but not a requirement. And people that do choose to provide a link (again: a choice; not an obligation) may do so from their list of bookmarks, which may require no googling at all.
You keep redressing “answering a social media query” as “Googling in the poster' behalf” when it's nothing like that.

Unless I (generic) am explicitly asking a particular other individual to answer an arbitrary query (which is not what gleamed as context from your post), a “search query via social media” isn't a request to anyone specific to do anything —the expectation would be *at most* for someone who already knows the answer to type it out (or link to a resource where it can be found).

OTOH the number of things Google actually managers to respond to correctly is going down fast, and the AI slop on top of it added by Google itself is not doing anybody any favor, so …

FWIW there are still setups/use cases that other init systems handle(d) better than even the most recent systemd (I have one such setup) but yeah, the shoving it down everybody throat before it was anywhere near close to usable was a major factor in its rejection. Ditto for PulseAudio.

disagree, in that this *is* still being done by the same rich guys with private jets. AI is being shoved by them everywhere by force because adoption is, in fact, considerably less quick than they would have hoped

I'm sure you've heard about the #CreativeCommons new #CCSignal initiative.
This is the only “signal” I want to send to #AI leechers.
EDIT because in my haste I had forgotten the image description.
EDIT 2: check downthreads for download links to the original SVG by yours truly.

possibly OT but that drawing style reminds me a lot of the graph capabilities of MarkDeep

but I don't know of any GUI editor to work directly in that graph, sorry.

technology can't solve the social problem of powerful people getting in the way of technology solving social problems.

Al di là delle questioni di morale internazionale, se anche davvero l'unica cosa a cui servirebbe riconoscere la #Palestina fosse far uscire #Netanyahu dai gangheri, a questo punto mi sembra già ragione sufficiente.
