1. Reverse engineering of proprietary stacks? Not sure how possible or relevant/useful this would be
2. Shit like QEMU VirGL? If you could emulate a device to pass through, in theory you could install the normal compute and driver stack but handle it however you want on the host side?
3. Opening up usage of CUDA on non-CUDA devices?
4. Curiosity

I am not a lawyer, but I’m trying really hard to think of any scenario where a private entity can be ordered to change how they talk about something.
I feel like I see this “an EO said this so it has to happen” as a way to grant more power to the executive branch than it actually has (and bypass the other two bodies). I don’t know whether renaming a piece of geography normally requires a law written by congress (is that normally within the power of the executive branch?) but under no circumstances could forcing a citizen to call it by the new name be in line with the first amendment.
I think that I would really like a primer on what an EO can _actually_ do; I imagine it can be used to modify and order things under the purview or control of the executive branch and no more. I watched Paprika last night for the first time (it's excellent) and one thing I like that seems to be a not uncommon thread running through shows/movies/games from Japan* is that someone builds technology and then it immediately is awful and they realize they shouldn't have done that and attempt to destroy it.
And then I remembered the first fucking Iron Man movie, which _starts_ going down that path when Robert Downey Jr. realizes he's spent his life building weapons that just hurt people... but instead his answer is "I will build even _more_ weapons and it will be fine because _I_ will be in charge of them, not the bad people"
aaand well yeah.
* (My guess is this is related to everything that happened to/in modern Japan, especially but probably not exclusively the atomic fucking bombs our stupid country dropped on them, but I haven't researched it or anything. That racial progress was hampered as much as possible from the top down, too. So it's not even as if the US made that progress willingly; things just became more insidious (and of course, the "war on drugs" continues to be a slavery pipeline + excuse to try and control Latin America).
The mythologizing of the U.S. past is actively harmful; the state is built on racism, imperialism, exploitation, and has never once moved away from those. The paean of a somehow ideal past just slows things down, at best.

This is definitely aimed at the "This isn't us!" type of thinking that tends to crop up now. The reality is, as far as the country goes, Trump really _is_ what the US is. It's a deeply racist segregated country.
Now, a better line of thought might be, "this isn't who we want to be", which I think is true for a lot of people. Part of that is grappling with the truth, which is that the 20th century internal prosperity of the US was an aberration, historically speaking, and limited only to the majority class. So saying "this isn't who we are" glosses over the deep roots, which are things that _must_ be pulled out to reform this country.
At least, that's how I interpreted it.

It's true that a lot of servers in the fediverse are probably run by cool people, but remember that everything you say is copied many, many times over to many, many different databases. For example, my single user instance here federates with like, 11,000 fucking instances, I am not joking. That means this little post could be copied into 11,000 databases, give or take, depending on the nature of the instances I'm federated with.
So in theory, let's say I posted something, like, I dunno, "fuck dtolnay". Any one of those servers could take offense with that and be shitty to me about it. And I don't control their retention policies.
So! While we don't have to worry about Mark "My Cold Dead Eyes Are The Mark of the Beast" or Elon "I fucked my own cybertruck and liked it" being shitty about our stuff here, it's not a bad idea to consider the nature of the fediverse when writing spicy things that could be prone to misinterpretation.

So I'm finally getting around to taking pictures from my camera, and this very tiny little spider felt understandably unhappy about my lens being in their face but they were _so pretty_. Their little pedipalps were like "please fuck off" and so I did.
no spiders were harmed in the making of this photograph and I only took a few to avoid bothering them.

(I know; different administrations. And I don't think the federal agencies were explicitly or publicly involved in the response to CHAZ/CHOP, but I am quite certain federal agents were hanging around. And I remember it being talked about on the national level... and not in a good light).
