Last Notes npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Computers were good enough to do everything we need them to do ten years ago. Everything since then is bullshit. If you can't do your job on a computer from 2016 you're just bad at your job. That's a fact, I don't make the rules. There are enough computer games to play now too. Your life isn't long enough to play all the ones we have, it's time to stop making more. Just play them. Stop making more computer. Immediately. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Once again, my professional recommendation in response to the latest Linux kernel vulnerability in the news is that you should gather up all your electronic devices, cast them into the sea, and retreat to the woods. Each night, gather your children and tell them tales of the Before Times when the hubris of humanity grew so large that we made idols of sand and spoke to them as equals. Remind them that the sand, of course, did not speak or think, but we imagined it could, and let it guide us to folly. Should a stranger ever come to your village with a glowing rectangle, encourage the youth to beat them with sticks. #infosec npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] @nprofile…gr74 this is exceptional and unprecedented. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] It's been quite a day at the op shop. #retrocomputing https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/116/367/552/947/946/707/original/9ae31d11e51c3bbd.jpg npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] One antique chip posted from the UK, a small piece of tape, a tiny act of vandalism, and finally my Amiga has achieved a new level of hackery. One whole megabyte of chip RAM! Just to stocktake here, what used to be a stock revision 5 Amiga 500 now has ... - a 68010 CPU - an upgraded Angus to support 1MB of chip RAM - an 8 meg RAM expansion and IDE controller - Kickstart 3.2 ROM - a gotek floppy emulator - 64GB SDD - Compact Flash card reader It's getting closer to done, I guess. It's a constant stream of requests from "Claude" attempting to access every possible item on the site. A couple of months ago, I set up a rule to return an error code for every request its user agent makes. It has not retrieved a single valid item for many, many weeks at this point. Every request is immediately and abruptly terminated. It hasn't even slowed down as a result. I guess some more infrastructure upgrades are needed. 🙃 npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] I have been using some variety of Linux based OS as my primary desktop computing environment for around 20 years and I have never and would never try to convince anyone else to do the same. In fact, I would not recommend computers at all. I advocate for leaving technology behind, retreating into the wilderness, and raising a new generation on carefully crafted tales of horror and doom so that should a stranger ever wander into the village with a glowing rectangle they will be thrown into a lake immediately. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] I just got a phone call and now my phone wants me to rate it. I started messing about with Tailscale at a really rudimentary level recently to just get a bit more familiar with it and I've gotta say they seem to be doing an amazing job of smoothing out a lot of pain points. Can't wait to shoot myself in the foot with it! :awesome: npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Been having a think about how we got stuff on our computers before internets, and some "retro experience" emulator someone mentioned, and I think I want to get a blank floppy, hook it up to my C64, and type in some programs from magazines. I used to hate doing that, but this is what nostalgia goggles do to you, isn't it? #c64 #retrocomputing npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Due to various upgrades (sidegrades?) Anyone got any suggestions for materials or colours that might go well? I was thinking maybe a NATO style strap but maybe that's too utilitarian for this? It's not like it's fancy though. It has an unremarkable revision 5 motherboard, a middle-of-the-road serial number, but somehow managed to get fitted with a "chicken lips" keyboard, the really good one that the early Amigas had. It works, I'll include power supply, some boot floppies, but other than that it's very stock standard. If you're reading this and are in Melbourne, I will personally bring it to your door for that price. It is tested, in working order, and has an intact front panel cover. It is a unicorn. I will not be shipping it anywhere, it'll be pick-up only on eBay. It's not worth the hassle or the risk. The current hurdle is that I haven't published or updated anything for a bit. I could half-ass this but ... does anyone have a small, simple android app that's maybe only published to F-droid, that'd be useful for people to be able to grab free from the Play Store? I'm not looking to stick ads in anything, just a simple app that I can easily rebuild and package to keep the lights on and if it helps someone that's even better. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] People love to criticise the Bureau of Meteorology web site for being neglected and behind the times, but it still works perfectly in the Nintendo 3DS web browser in 2025 and isn't that what's truly important? https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/114/125/721/570/799/862/original/818213ebf85466a3.jpg npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] The number one reason I want to get an electric car is that every servo near me is now playing ads over shitty little speakers embedded in the fuel pumps. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] I love it when there's been a new iOS release recently, because you get to see all the cool new emojis in people's profiles like , and . is taking it a bit far though. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Fuck Mozilla but holy shit I do not want to have to start telling people I use something called "Librewolf" there must be something else right? npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Hello, this is Bene Gesserit technical support, have you tried taking your hand out of the box and putting it back in again? npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] The only fitting reward for Antony Green's decades of service is to appoint him Governor General and let him dismiss a parliament or two. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] It's Public Liability Insurance time, which basically means I just paid about $200 for a PDF. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Them: I get an error pop up when I try to open Word documents in Adobe. If I saw just dark mode screenshots on the page, I wouldn't try getting it and installing it to find out, I'd look for something else instead. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] @nprofile…8nvu @nprofile…alh2 @nprofile…qxwh @nprofile…fv4m it concerns me a bit that every screenshot there is dark-themed. Does the app actually support device light/dark mode preferences? If it does, please show some shots in the gallery because I do tend to skip past things that don't make that clear. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Hey, this is driving me crazy! Anyone who specifically has a recent Motorola phone, could you please open https://dev.feedtube.com/post/69/ (nice) in Firefox, in the light theme, and tell me if the body text font seems super light like this? I'm wanting to confirm this is confined to one narrow case because I can't reproduce this on any other device but my Moto G84. If the page looks normal to you and you're using anything else, no need to tell me, that's what I expect. 😎 For comparison, the second screenshot is from Chrome on the exact same device, so you can see how faded out the Firefox one is. #FeedtubeDev https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/113/998/507/175/443/637/original/256e7ccf7858ec66.png https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/113/998/508/272/524/380/original/9e55f344f959a831.png npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] @nprofile…mjxp mine is in an unknown state. Google approved this, but referred the actual payment process to "Payoneer" and hoo boy is that being a pain in the arse. Maybe it's because I signed up as a sole trader with my ABN etc, but some verification failed because my bank account doesn't "appear" to belong to me or something, and I need to send them a pic of a physical bank statement. I turned off physical, mailed documents from my bank *years* ago. So this will not be quick. Oh, and then this Payoneer mob will be taking 2% of my payment as well. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Google sent me an email last week about reducing the battery capacity of my old Pixel 4a with an "update" and I ignored the links in it, assuming it was just "buy a new phone" stuff. Anyway, turns out they're replacing the battery for free in some places (not Australia though, boo) but they offered me either $50 (USD) cash or $100 store credit for another Pixel. I took the cash and got an email saying it was approved this morning. Don't have to return the phone or anything so I can still drop Lineage on it like I was planning to. I've got the resistor in there to switch it to TTL mode, but no switch yet as the instructions are a bit ambiguous and I want to leave that for a rainy day. 😜 Watch Jan's video if you want to know more, or check out the page on Instructables! https://youtu.be/NhgjBUmnA7k https://www.instructables.com/Build-Your-Own-Logic-Probe-on-the-Cheap-Using-a-55/ https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/113/773/593/204/322/675/original/4065bb16f859f24e.mp4 npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] @nprofile…mjxp damn you, Jan. It's not fancy but it's reliable. I have been hanging onto it for emotional reasons, mainly. It was my first major purchase when putting my life back together in 2011, and it was great for a small flat at the time. Needs a clean but that's all. I just don't have anywhere to put it now, and I've got a mini fridge for the workshop which is much more appropriate for my needs. This has been a good friend and it could use a good home! Let me know if you're keen and we'll work something out. https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/113/755/235/222/131/777/original/1d8807b1bcaabb28.jpg npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] Dear person with laptop issues in Perth, You've got 30 minutes to return my call or you're stuck like that until the 27th. Serenity and peace. Suddenly, Meech is standing on all fours and *hissing* like I've never heard before. He's totally freaked out. I jump up, kind of thinking that one of the other ferals has discovered the cat door again. I can't see or hear anything, so I leave the hallway light on where Meech has decided he needs to stand guard and go back to bed. Anyway this morning I discovered my shelving in the workshop had fallen down. I slept right through that part. Welp. https://static.chinwag.net.au/media_attachments/files/113/658/773/165/828/195/original/a6f73a1ac035f12d.jpg npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] It's fully operational! I've replaced the digitiser now, and got a fancy new stainless steel and white stylus to match the rest of the setup! I haven't got any GBA cartridges to test with, but I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be fine - and the whole point of this case is seeing things! If you know exactly where to look, you can see my red bodge wires running to the replacement fuse, even. The only original parts left are the main board, the wifi antenna, microphone, and the speakers. On my first day I found I was suddenly unable to project like I had previously, and was just kind of lying on the floor going "ok, and second now I'll get it" with everyone in the office watching me awkwardly. Weird shit, probably happened because I've been watching a lot of bizarre TV shows. In unrelated news, I've been going through various interviews and discussions related to a possible new job lately. That's going well! npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] It's not my homelab, it's my emotional support production environment. npub1zjd8ssttylwunnacc080paeshn7rjpeyls73vfd27uhepnrypjhsx49s67 Mike [SEC=OFFICIAL] In today's small mercies, the Dell SAS controller card I ordered off eBay was indeed already flashed with IT Mode firmware, and I didn't have to go down the path of doing that myself.
