Thanks to https://github.com/vmaction and https://anyvm.org/ I can now build the smolBSD builder image with NetBSD in GH's CI <3

2026-09-20 16:49:22 GMT

From https://github.com/marketplace/actions/netbsd-vm
Note: 11.0-microvm is a fast-boot VARIANT of 11.0 [...]: anyvm boots NetBSD's official MICROVM kernel directly on QEMU's microvm machine type (no BIOS/PCI/ACPI, virtio over MMIO), which cuts boot-to-ssh about 4x vs the pc machine (7.4s vs 29.6s under KVM)
🥰

Hey @npub1j3k…rc5q great work on https://github.com/credativ/FrOSCon2026-microvm/ !
You might want to try NetBSD MICROVM / smolBSD kernel which boots in ~10ms https://smolbsd.org/ :)
This guy even tried it on Proxmox https://github.com/rcarmo/pve-microvm/blob/main/docs/guests.md
Thanks @npub1unq…0xp7 for the heads up on this project <3

hmm, 121ms, not bad but much slower than on x86...
Thanks for testing!

I've just added the boot time printing like in x86 SMOL kernels, could you try bmake kernfetch and tell me what's your kernel boot time? 😇

I has smolBSD in mind sorry, newer macs run on arm64 which I didn't touched. You can still run the microvm kernel on an old x86 mac, I used one for my tests :)
