Back when Comcast headend techs built channel multiplexes in the headend someone in Colorado Springs mapped the Playboy PPV channel onto the wrong mux. It had the same program ID as Nickelodeon (of course). It went out on the system for several hours until someone in the call center actually believed a customer and called down.

I usually copied my boss on most email. It was mostly a CYA move and always came in handy when someone was looking for someone to blame for their incompetence. Last thing any supervisor needs is someone from another department dropping a hot steamer in his lap and blaming one of his guys.

One of dad's HP41 calculators (don't worry, he has several others to mess with... they're just having to downsize significantly and can't have 10 of everything anymore). When I read the Foundation trilogy I imagined Hari Seldon predicting the future with one of these. Many are lost forever because the batteries leaked and destroyed the very fragile contacts. the whole home DVR boxes are all end of life and no longer repairable due to none of the chipsets being available. That’s one of many reasons why cable companies moved to cloud DVRs.
There are some cool features of cDVR though. Since all channels are always recording you can start over on any program. And if you set a season pass it should automatically give you the last two weeks or so.
Is it worth $20? Not to me, I cut video service when I retired and had to start paying for it

The cable billing systems have literally hundreds of service codes. Each one exists to support a plan that at least one subscriber still uses. They can never go away. In the case of one of my former employers they ran out of two-letter combinations and had to move up the EBCDIC (IBM mainframe version of ASCII).
You had a legacy code that set up the channels you wanted with the home DVR. When you were moved to the new code it didn't include home DVR and they want to eliminate it.

The problem is that scarcity in other areas will drive products away because they'll demand a premium. Cattle ranching in Texas has lower overhead than in New York, so it is worth it to the Texan to ship beef away from the hometown market. Eventually the producers and buyers settle into a sort of stasis where prices reflect good margins and what the market will bear. Eventually what was once NY ranch land will be repurposed for something else, and no one will remember NY cattle.

Thanks for you comments. Sounds like most people even if they have the option aren't bothering.
I ask because I've been playing with SIP phones that connect to a cloud PBX over WiFi. The handsets are very "Noika candy bar" style but they act like office phones. I think I could send one of these out to every family member and do all the stuff office phones do, including group calls and paging for almost free.
