I wonder how long you would have, in your own proper time, to enjoy the fact that you’re inside the event horizon. You (what remains of you) will hit the singularity pretty quickly, but is that seconds or days? I can’t imagine it’s any longer than that…?

Generation Jones. I like that! I hadn’t heard of that before, but upon reading the wikipedia article, it fits.

“The Mitch McConnell mystery is solved”? I don’t think so. This photo and statement solved nothing; the guy in the photo is waaay too healthy-looking to have had CPR administered 4 weeks ago. He’s also healthy-looking enough to be able to do some live interview on TV, five minutes would be enough, where he could say something like “Thanks for all the well-wishes, I’m recuperating well, shame about Lindsey, gosh those Argentinians played well, see you in six weeks”.

That sort of thing would “solve the mystery”. As is, Ron Johnson mumbled something about how this is an older photo, Andy Beshear says he’s heard from two agencies that McConnell is dead, and there is nothing to contradict these bits of info. This is not remotely a solved mystery.

I am not in any way an expert, but it’s my understanding that neutrinos are created in flavor eigenstates (determined by the reaction that creates the neutrino), which are not also mass eigenstates, and this is what causes the oscillation. I don’t think it’s currently possible to measure the mass of a neutrino directly, so I don’t think we worry about mass eigenstates.

I’m not an expert in the field, so I don’t know how rigorously or why this should be true. Presumably John will enlighten us; but given his statement, that third possibility is excluded.

“We know m₁ and m₂ are really close to each other, while m₃ is further away.” would seem to preclude that.

How “from scratch” do you start? I ask because I make mac&cheese in an instant pot, and although I do use the powdered cheese sauce, I also drop in shredded cheese, and I think it would come out fine even if I left off the powdered cheese; and that would be “from scratch” enough for me. The whole thing takes ~15 minutes?

True, but even millennia ago there were explorers and builders. I would guess that if you had been born 2000 years ago, you’d still be an explorer…

I think it takes both kinds, the explorers and the formalizers. Each would be kind of lost without the other.

Are you sure that you are plotting with high enough resolution that you know for a fact where and how tall all those peaks are? Ie, the picture doesn’t change visibly if you double or triple the resolution? I ask because these variations remind me of graphs I’ve made in very different context, and fairly smooth curves start to get these beats as the sampling gets coarser. In my case these were more sampling artifacts, not sure here but it’s worth checking?

Is it? It may be a gateway to actually developing small to medium apps, but I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that it removes the learning aspect (not just of programming, but writing and graphic design etc too).

1 acre-foot is about 1.23M liters. So that’s about 1.33 acre-foot. That might work for a small specialty farm? For a big farm it’s probably not going to move the needle much.

my closest encounter with homeless people was one evening when I was walking home from work. Two guys came up to me and said “hey, you should look out, the police are doing a sweep and taking everyone’s stuff” (I look scruffy at the best of times). I thanked them, told them I would certainly be careful and pay attention, and wished them the best of luck. They were just brothers looking out for a brother…

Yeah, I would put it in some safe sheltered spot if you can pick it up. If it’s a chase to get it, don’t; you likely risk more injury than leaving it alone. Other possibilities are if it’s egg-bound (unlikely at end of October) or that it got into something toxic. In either of those cases, there isn’t much you can do… a safe sheltered spot is still a kindness.
