Jeeee!

If we manage to make the #Fediverse succeed*, what do you think is the biggest danger it faces from #BigTech?

@nprofile…uptt I would call this performative UX. Is that a term already?

@nprofile…uptt Booo, expressing an opinion only after knowing what we're talking about?!
But no, very good idea. I'm currently writing a slightly more practicel analysis of the roles (friend, follower, followee, mutual), and rules about those roles, that exist in popular platforms. This should facilitate the discussion.

@nprofile…uptt Thanks for sharing, Scott!
What do you think? Should #mastodon implement friends-like connections too?
I personally tend to think this should be left to other platforms. Mastodon is good at offering a place where you can #toot.
Other platforms may offer other "roles" for people to play; friends, or colleagues, or connection types we haven't thought of enabling yet.
By choosing a set of roles, a platform sets the boundaries for a particular culture to develop. The UX should facilitate that culture, in terms of functionality and vibe.

@nprofile…3eqn Hi, Gilles here from my mastodon handle. I just approved your comment, and then it became a "quote". I will look into this later when I have some time. The confusion may actually be related to me not choosing sensible setting in the fediverse wp-plugin. The plugin has been updated lately, and I should take a bit of time looking into that. So, I'll get back to you. I am certainly with you concerning: this should all work as obviously as possible!

I have a question about #activitypub :
Is there a method for: Following from account xyz only post of a certain type (e.g., images) or a certain hashtag (#abcd).
As an example: I would like to be able only to see the comics that a comic artist posts, but not their further opinion. (type is only image)
Another example from the sender side: I am a music group and I would like to invite people to: "Follow #concert_announcement for @mycrazycoolband"
Maybe @nprofile…2gus knows about this?

@nprofile…ks6m Who made this graph? I do get your point, but these model lines are just default fits in some plotting function, probably part of ggplot. Not some informed forecast. That's why I dislike these plotting functions that make adding such model liles too easy. People use them without knowing what they are doing.

Thanks!

@nprofile…ks6m So the bat specialist knows better than the bats what is a proper place for them.
I feel this is an analogy for something, but don't yet know what exactly for.

Can anyone explain why #wikivoyage is so underused? I mean, traveling is such a wikiable thing!
Anyhow, I will keep on adding stuff to the Basel wikivoyage, even if it were only to remember for myself how my guests can park their cars.

@nprofile…r5de @nprofile…6m2n Great, thanks! This site is really cool (also for me to learn some stuff)
For my niece, however,I would actually like to spark her enthusiasm without saying: "Here, a book to learn programming". It's supposed to be a birthday present that she likes receiving!

2025-07-08 11:42:03 GMT

Hello #Tech-loving #Readers in the #fediverse. I have a question :
My niece turns 16 soon. She is a fanatic reader and she's smart, good at languages. She's not in a "nerd bubble", but I would not be surprised if she would actually enjoy learning to code a lot.
As a birthday present, I would therefore like to give her a good #book (English or dutch) that may inspire her to consider learning to code.
Any suggestions?

Oh no, of course not, those numbers are inflated by the coverage about #ozempic.

Wait, neurotic is not a mental illness. Since over 100 years, this word only has a colloquial meaning. I find it slightly unfair towards the sender to act as if you are hurt by that choice of wording.
Not saying I find corruption's reply incredibly productive, but that's a different question.

@nprofile…4uhh I would argue against replacing all by one suite. It may be a convenient, but you make yourself dependent again. I use #proton for #VPN and drive. #Fastmail for mail and calendar. For Office stuff, #LibreOffice is perfect for me. Passwords in #Bitwarden. I don't lack any convenience working with these diverse tools.

@nprofile…x0kw @nprofile…0yjd I don't get that, apparently, few people understand that Putins objective is not to gain land, but to have influence over/power to suppress Ukraine. Security guearantees are precisely opposing this objective and he will thus never accept them. Only if these guarantees are weak enough they will be accepted.
So, Europe, watch out for the trap: If Putin accepts your security guarantees, they are too weak.

@nprofile…hftj @nprofile…m7my Well, that's a shame and a good reason to use another pw manager. By the way, I think it is wise and good to have various products at from various providers. I do not particularly like the "suite" that Proton offers. It slowly starts to smell a bit like a juggernaut company. If I were to advice them, I'd say: stop adding products!

@nprofile…hftj @nprofile…m7my I don't use ProtonPass, but I am a bit surprised: Do you not have a locally stored and encrypted vault? (like I have with #bitwarden)
