So, I decided not to use ZFS for my in-home NAS. I checked it in another server with 2GB of RAM and... it works, but any heavy I/O operation resulted in killing spree of NetBSD kernel, OOM-killing the processes to free the memory. And NetBSD ZFS doesn't have knobs to fine-tune memory limits (IIRC they are still in development).
Instead, the usual approach - the old^Wmature technology - is in use. With the help of netbsd-users maillist (https://mail-index.netbsd.org/netbsd-users/2026/09/21/msg034895.html) I configured the next thing for HDD with RAIDframe, CGD and LVM:
1) Two identical 1TB disks: /dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1.
2) Both in use in RAID1 /dev/raid0 (as described in this document: https://netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-rf.html, but without any tricks for root FS).
3) /dev/raid0 divided in two parts: /dev/raid0a for root FS and /dev/raid0b.
4) Both disks (/dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1) has installed bootloader via /usr/sbin/installboot -o timeout=10 -v /dev/rwd0 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv2 and /usr/sbin/installboot -o timeout=5 -v /dev/rwd1 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv2
5) The /dev/raid0b was encrypted with CGD, so the /dev/raid0b -> /dev/cgd0.
6) The whole encrypted disk (/dev/cgd0a) was added as physical volume to LVM. The volume group /dev/vg0 was created with this PV and the logical volume /dev/vg0/lv0 was created inside this VG to store the real data.
The LVM allows to add new disk space, just by adding new physical volume to the volume group and then extending the logical volume and resizing the FFSv2. I tested it with a test USB drive and it works and even doesn't led to data loss :drgn_aww:
And the separate CGD separately encrypts existing physical volume and each new physical volume just in case :drgn_blush_giggle:
One quirk: the underlying physical disks (/dev/wd0 and /dev/wd1) plus /dev/raid0 should use MBR partition scheme or NetBSD disklabel - because the root partition should start from 0 sector - if it started not from zero sector, then the bootloader will be unable to find root FS. I tried to use GPT, but the installer was unable to create root partition not from zero sector, only from 2048 sector :drgn_cry:

Thanks for your common sense and weighted position!
As a great-grandson of soldier, who fought a real Nazis during WWII, I think my ancestor is rotating in his grave as fast as possible, looking to the modern clowning, when the words "nazi" and a "faschist" became a common slurs and completely lost its initial meanings.
The level of cringe, which I feel when I hear about "faschist software" and accusations in "faschism" is so big, that I started to completely ignore such accusations — looks like nowadays it is possible to become a "faschist" for common things (e.g. I suppose it is easy to find some opinions, asserting that only "faschists" write programs in C, etc :drgn_blush_giggle: ), which are recognized by some small but loud group of radicals as "bad" and they are able to gather an angry mob to make some attacks. Or have some power, so the "doorman syndrome" (синдром вахтёра) (it is a Russian idiom: when the someone without a power, got some power and then exploiting it just to feel the power over people) is manifesting. So, I considered that it is better to form my own opinion about some subject, remembering that I'm not from USA/Western Europe and I'm not a radical in any way :drgn_blush_giggle:
Anyway, an impossibility to discuss the opinions, not to silence the opponent by loudly shouting the words with lost meaning (like "nazi") is a lost art nowadays — as I think. As a guy, living in the most sanctioned country in the world, I see this in the lot of levels — from conversations in the Fediverse, to international diplomacy. I thought that the next one iteration of "left-wing<=>right-wing parties" cycle around the globe will teach people that discussions and centered/weighted decisions are better then radicalization and de-humanisation of the opponents. But looks like learning is also a lost art nowdays :drgn_sigh:
As I heard from one political analyst from my country (it is not her own words, just quote): "the old world is dying, the new world is struggling to born, and nowadays is the time for monsters" (translated from Russian, so it is not an exact quote).

The more time passed, the more my FreeBSD installation reminds OpenBSD, lol. Doas for privileges elevation, cwm as a window manager, got instead of git, etc :drgn_blush_giggle:

Yep, I heard one cool story about a guy, who was riding alongside cafe with free WiFi, while his phone has no 3G connection — and these seconds of bad WiFi connection was enough for XMPP client to load new messages from the server. So, possibly, the XMPP over Meshtastic will be a thing :drgn_aww:

Isn't this some kind of Unix heritage? :drgn_think_confused: I see that for packages in my #NetBSD box it is a common thing: all rc scripts installed to somewhere like /usr/pkg/share/examples/… and package installation script suggests to copy them to the /etc/rc.d/ if I want to start them with /etc/rc.conf
I suppose, this is for package reinstallation without removing the rc scripts for them? :drgn_think_confused: I have some modifications in some scripts and they aren't lost after package reinstallation.

Possibly, the #XMPP could be used first — e.g. the #Prosody installation and configuration could be dead simple and it supports all necessary encryption out of the box.
As practice :drgn_blush_giggle: shows, the authoritarian governments usually one step behind the tech, the society is using. So, first time the simple solution, like Prosody on the server out of reach of Five eyes countries, bought for crypto and without logins logging, will be enough I think.
When the next generation of politics will learn about XMPP — well it's time to deeper and mass use mesh networks. As I heard, there are big communities of #Meshtastic in the Europe, especially in Germany.
Look at this as an endless battle between sword and shield.

+1 about that. While reading the article I started to feel that these brands from China simply don't want to make an opensource driver. And there are no technical reasons, but possibly some marketing/financial reasons to do that :drgn_think:
Maybe they think that it is more profitable to spend developers time for polishing Win/Mac drivers? Maybe they think that Linux/BSD people are not the main customers and the companies didn't get enough money per time to help with these opensource drivers? I dunno :drgn_think_confused:
But I know that an East is a delicate matter (Восток — дело тонкое) and sometimes the polite answer means a hard NO.

Wrote new article — about how to use some ThinkPad-specific keys with FreeBSD. Most of the Fn-keys and volume control separate keys could be uses "as is" — the OS passes the proper and well-known keycodes (like XF86audioMute, etc) to the X server. But some keys needs some "black magic" (devd and acpi_ibm kernel module).

Checked all little utilities, which I'm using in my daily computing, are they still good old programs or slopware?
I prefer to use little programs, which were created to please the needs of it's creator. And/or some folks which has the same needs. The process of such little program creation usually, if author in sane state of mind, doesn't mimick process of commercial software creation, where developers need to rush to "deliver features" to please management and investors. For now this leds to forcing developers to use LLMs on the workplace — all to "deliver features" faster. So one developer for the same price (salary) able to make more features. Profit!
So, when I see how opensource programmer uses LLM to create some opensource program — it is a red flag for me and I'll try to avoid using such program. Because it means to me that programmer doesn't like the process of creation. Like an artist who don't like to draw or photographer, who don't like to make photos. Also, (s)he possibly has a "corporate mindset" (deliver value and features faster, no fun allowed). So, looks like his/her creature is not a pet, but a cattle. When I prefer to use "pet"-programs — usually they are nicer, simpler and doesn't bring me a lot of problems.
Results are pretty good — only three programs are slopware now. These three programs, installed from repositories of my OS, have versions, when these programs were coded by humans.
Here they are:
1) rsync — version 3.4.1 is good, but the next versions will be slopware, since programming happens with Claude LLM.
2) ImageMagick7 — installed good version 7.1.2-15. But since 7.1.2-16 it become a slopware. LLM the same — Claude, was used in one commit.
3) python3 — installed version 3.11.15. Since 3.13.6, according to commits and release dates, it become a slopware too — there are some commits, where the same Claude LLM was used.

I have the same question :drgn_think_confused: . Since I read handbook for #FreeBSD 14.3 (chapter 4), I learnt that ports are:
> is a set of Makefiles, patches, and description files. Each set of these files is used to compile and install an individual application on FreeBSD, and is called a port.
As I understand, the package is made from port but not the port itself.

Started to touch FreeBSD jail and Bhyve VMs, using them for some programming project. Damn, if only I have such unlimited power near 15 years ago, when I was in university!
Need to have a building environment with some libraries for FastCGI and PostgreSQL installed? No problem, write a Bastillefile which enables sshd and mounts my catalog with projects inside the jail via the nullfs magic. Then create thin jail, apply this template to it and boom — I have a ready development environment with ssh access and all necessary stuff. Just connect to it and build the program, all necessary sources are already here.
Need to test program on the NetBSD? No problem — just create Bhyve VM with preinstalled netbsd template, then install OS with comp set and setup some services: Nginx, PostgreSQL, spawn-fcgi, etc… Then type C-x d /ssh:[email protected]:~ in the Emacs, copy sources via Dired and I can test my program on the environment, as close as possible to the my home server.
All things looks so integrated in the OS and console software are so good, that it is incomparable with my Docker trips at work :drgn_aww: When programming become fun again :drgn_hyper:
