In the past month, we started getting a few new accounts created on @npub1ypf…53gr every day, with valid email addresses (but not under the attacker control? confirmation emails are never clicked), random 15 letter usernames from residential IPs all over the world.
After checking a few online RBLs, I started using https://cleantalk.org/, checking the user IP on registration, and it flagged all of them. I did not knew this service before, but it seems both cheap and with good real time data?

As the end of year approaches, we spent some time to rework the Wrapstodon feature that we first tried last year.
It now collects your yearly data on-demand, does not require admins to enable anything (so it will be available to everyone in December 2026) and you get a nice shareable URL with your yearly summary!
Admins on nightly releases can enable it using the "wrapstodon" feature flag. It has been enabled on mastodon.online and mastodon.social

Three years ago, I decided to quit Twitter and install a Mastodon server to see if it can replace it for me. It worked better than expected and I discoered so many new amazing people along the way.
I would also never have imagined that I could end up recruiting and leading the team building it!

After many interviews with such organisations, the main roadblocks for them to join the Fediverse are:
- understanding what it is
- figure out their strategy (number of accounts, do they want their own server, define related policies…)
- figure out with their IT department if they want to host it (and if yet, how to do so), or delegate the technical parts to a 3rd party
- be able to open support tickets and know they will get an answer.

After a lot of work and discussions, I am very happy that we are finally announcing our hosting and support offerings to help institutions (cities, government, universities, corporations, non-profits…) get on Mastodon and into the Fediverse.
It will help the Mastodon organisation become more sustainable in the long run, but also provide an easy (easier?) path for those entities to come onboard and embrace open social media.

thanks! Most of those require very significant change to ActivityPub, and we do not have the resources for such a complex task right now.
We are considering something to copy a part of your posts when you move your account, but this also create challenges (you loose your interactions obviously, private posts can’t be moved, and it provides a very easy path to load large volume bad content into an instance at once, so it would need to involve moderation checks)

For Mastodon API developers: there is no documentation (yet) for the APIs around composing quote posts, but this will come soon.
We added documentation for displaying quote posts (https://docs.joinmastodon.org/entities/Status/#quote), which is already supported in Mastodon 4.4 and we encourage you to support it in your clients as this will soon be available to all users.

This is built on FEP-044f (Consent-respecting quote posts, https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/044f/fep-044f.md), which requires the quoted account to provide a stamp proving that they approved the quote.
If there is no such stamp (or it has been invalidated), then Mastodon (and other software supporting the FEP) will not display the quote.
If the quoted account does not support the FEP, no stamps will be issued, and the quote will not be displayed either, only the link (as before).

- on their post, you have a new menu to remove their quote of your post
- you confirm, and your quote is removed and shown as having been retracted
- the quote is no longer displayed on the original post

I do not know a lot about #golang, but I heard that some people here do, so…
I have a service where I would like users to write simple functions (take some input, return a result) in a script language, stored in the database, that is secure (isolated execution and such) and performant. They need to be able to call arbitrary simple functions (string argument, boolean result) that the software exposes to them, and have basic control flow.
What would you use?

We discussed "partial quotes" when working on quote posts, and decided not to explore this because you could easily change the text of what you are quoting to make it misleading but still attributed to the original author. Also it would probably have been good to have this discussion when we asked for comments, now we are deep into implementation and did not get much feedback when asked for it :(

Ivory's quotes are not proper quote posts, but more of a rich preview when a post contains "RE: <status url>”
We are implementing quote posts with full control for the user (choose if you want to be quoted, retract a previous quote…) which requires proper server and client support (see https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/bringing-quote-posts-to-mastodon/)

Displaying quote posts will be in Mastodon 4.4.0, which we plan to release the first week of July (and is already deployed on mastodon.social).
Authoring quote posts will be in Mastodon 4.5, which will be released as soon as we finished this feature, probably at the end of summer. We are 70% done on quote posts and the hardest part is done (figuring out the protocol details to implement them in the Fediverse while giving control to users), now we "simply" need to finish the code

I am very happy that today we merged the pull request switching the Mastodon frontend build chain from the very old (and outdated) Webpack 4 to @npub19e3…mcy2 ⚡️
It is not visible to end-users but it will greatly improve the developer experience with working on the Mastodon frontend and opens the door for many good things.

Yes this is very complex (and not specific to Mastodon, most if not all AP software suffer from it). We are very happy that a contributor offered to solve this, and are doing what we can to review their work and guide them so it is done with all the possible problems in mind.
We are still afraid that enabling this will create *a lot* of instance-to-instance trafic, but we will need to test it to see if it is too much.

As I said in my previous reply, there is work in progress to do it properly server-side. You need to store/cache it on your own server so you dont create too much trafic for the remote server (which might not support the Mastodon API, so you cant really load directly from it with the app), plus you need to take care of blocks, post visibility & such. Then you need to figure out when to refresh the data, and how to handle long multi-level threads (that can span many instances).

because your app should not make requests to another server than your instance, for privacy reasons. And it won’t work on the web.

PDQ is something that Meta has been pushing, but from the information I got, you want PhotoDNA, and it's algorithm is closed source (and under NDA).
I am not saying that the current situation is ideal (even if from our experience CSAM on well-moderated Mastodon servers is very infrequent) but mandating every website with UGC to do content scanning is the death of 99% of them. And the "free quotas" that you mentioned do not help at all except for the tiniest sites.

We processed 4.6M images on mastodon.social in the last month. My small instance with 15 active users processed 50k of them. There is no way to scan this without increasing the costs greatly using a 3rd party service. And you can not do it yourself because the CSAM databases are all under NDAs and require a lot of legal agreements to even start have access to the algorithm (which is very closed source)

their issues are legal, not technical. They hinted at it many times. This is also why they have not launched federation in the EU, they are very scared of another billion fine by regulators, so they ask for every little step to be explicitely approved before launching

I started playing with DragonflyDB to replace Redis as the app data storage for a Mastodon instance. Redis used 22 GB of memory, DragonflyDB uses 8.5 GB.
That's very impressive, probably in part because Mastodon uses a lot of sorted sets (for timelines) and Dragonfly stores those in a much more efficient data structure, resulting in a lot less overhead (see https://www.dragonflydb.io/blog/dragonfly-new-sorted-set).
Additional bonus: they provide a K8s operator, with built-in HA

Yes it is, and comes from multiple factors. One being the resources, Bluesky has at least 10x our resources, they have been able to recruit a top notch team, do marketing, comms and overall execute very well. I am personally doing my best to get things moving with whatever means I have, and I like to think that this shows real results (for example the projects mentioned above, as well as tripling the engineering team over the last year)

Well, this is completely not true. We (the Mastodon project) are publicly working on https://www.fediscovery.org thanks to a grant from the NGI program, with the goal to solve the (very hard) discovery/search problem in the Fediverse, in a privacy-compliant way.
Quote Posts are also in progress, well specified so the other Fediverse software can implement them and with a lot of controls to respect users choice and privacy. We publish monthly blog posts with our progress

Today is my 2 year Mastodon anniversary! After decided to stop using Twitter I created my instance, invited a few friends and started discovering the Fediverse.
Then I tried to help where I saw that my skills could be needed and got hired to rework the project & mastodon.social infrastructures, then moved to a wider engineering role and here I am, 2 years later, working tirelessly to ensure that our beloved software and network thrive.

It helps with some actors, but it is not an issue with many others, including the ones that use captcha-busting software (there are now even “dark" SAAS for this), or for human-generated spam using content farms (we see a lot of those in some countries like Nigeria and Vietnam)

Another consideration: new installations should not allow open registrations by default. This should be a setting that the administrator needs to opt into, and this is a good place to inform them that open registration instances require moderation resources.
In Mastodon, we display a warning when the admin chooses this option. Mastodon also support requiring moderator/admin approval for new sign ups, which helps a lot in preventing automated registrations.

I would encourage every Fediverse software project to implement a “dead-man switch" on registrations: if nobody with moderator permissions has been active in the last week, then disable new account creation.
The Fediverse has a significant number of abandoned instances that are used by bad actors to create accounts and send spam.
We implemented this in Mastodon (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/29318) and it has been highly effective.

Mastodon supports the SWF foundation. They call us partners because of this support at launch I guess. I have no idea what relationship they have with Meta. And there is no relationship between Mastodon and Meta.
Similarly, Meta is a W3C member, Mastodon participates to some W3C meetings about ActivityPub.

After updating the Mastodon iOS app to build with XCode 16, we are noticing some very weird data corruption, but only in Release configuration. We suspect this is some data corruption in one of our dependencies caused by some compiler optimisation, but so far we have not really found out the cause.

As this worked for the Internet Archive, let’s try another one:
I am looking first an engineering contact at Youtube to troubleshoot the issue with them no longer returning metadata when Mastodon tries to fetch the preview for a video. It comes from their side and something changed a few weeks ago, and I would like to see how this can be fixed.

we try to do our best regarding accessibility when working on frontend code. But nobody in the team is an accessibility expert, and we do not get many contributions on this topic. If some people want to help this will be welcome!
I would also not rely on automated audits for this, thats a complex topic. We got a few offers for accessibility audits, but then the issue becomes fixing the issues, and the core team wont be able to do it unfortunately

Question for #ActivityPub implementors: has there been any research on how to best handle deletions (accounts and/or posts)?
At the moment, the best (and only?) way to know that an account deletion has been federated everywhere is to notify any known inbox / instance, for every account deletion.
This is very wasteful and not efficient, are there any alternatives? Has anyone worked on this?

This is not formalised right now, and there is no documented process for this (yet), mostly because we want to first see if this is viable (and that it will probably overwhelm the current team tbh), but for example @npub1ecs…u4wq is doing it, and she has been able to do significant improvements to some parts of the code and those have been merged.
On the other side, others reached out, then disappeared after realising the real amount of work needed for what they wanted to do

Opening PRs for large features without discussing with the core team beforehand will often result in the PR not being reviewed / accepted, as it will not implement things in a way that are okay for the core team, not be aligned with design, not take into account some other planned work and so on. But if someone wants to work on a specific feature, they can reach out and I will do my best to see if there is a way for them to work on it in a manner that it will get merged

We will not hire a "safety developer" or similar role (unless we get *much* bigger probably), and do not have a feature-by-feature budget. But we have a (fluid) roadmap, which includes safety features, and are working to grow the team so we have developer time to advance on the roadmap. This also includes having the time to think about such features, as they often are not as easy to implement that it can seem.

Nice quality of life improvement added to the latest #Mastodon code: account cards on hover!
A perfect companion to the upcoming grouped notifications 😃
We need to tune the behaviour a bit, but I am already missing them when using another instance.
All of this will be in 4.3, which we plan to release soon!

To get back to the initial topic, polyfill.io allowed website authors to easily load what we call “polyfills”, little bits of Javascript code implementing specific features in older browsers, so as a developer you can use these modern features without worrying about breaking older devices. And polyfill.io did it in a very nice and performant way, you only needed to add a few lines to your HTML and it worked! 4/7

Then, sometimes, a company comes up and offers you a large sum of money for it, enough for you to live a better life and never have to feel this pressure, and you accept. This is nowadays very common for browser extensions, can you guess why? 2/7

Browser extensions can have access to a lot of data, including the websites you visit, but they can also inject scripts and other code on the webpages, allowing them to improve your experience. But they can also inject malicious code, and when someone comes out of the blue and offers to “acquire” your extension for a few hundred thousand dollars, they do not really care about your users, but their data… Some examples: https://github.com/extesy/hoverzoom/discussions/670. 3/7

So a few months ago we learned that the individual running polyfill.io silently sold the service to an obscure chinese company.
This popular (and well done / very useful) service was created by the Financial Times, who stopped maintaining it and "donated it to the community", meaning that it relied on a few volunteers to continue running it (and on Fastly who provided the hosting for free). 1/7

Thanks everybody, after fixing a few small issues it seems to work fine with streaming, it is a delight to see them update live!
There is still significant work to be done, both to handle some special cases (slow mode, avoiding screen jumps when scrolling, unread notifications, disconnections…) and visual improvements, but we are making progress.

We are open to any improvements on this, but a proper implementation here will require significant (technical) work, as well as UX work. And unfortunately we do not have the resources to work on this right now. If someone wants to have a go at it, I can probably spend a few evening drafting some documents to outline what we would like.

This WWDC keynote would have been much better if it stopped before the IA stuff. At least the first hours was good and only contained 2 mentions of machine learning.
Some IA features looks potentially useful, if they are local, but I hope I can disable all the crap granularly, like the image generation thing.

We merged a migration yesterday and it is far too expensive to run on large servers, so we are rolling it back. If you already applied it, please check the link above to revert it before upgrading.
It is probably best to skip today's nightly build, if you did not deploy it yet.
