You profile makes me think you are located in CA, possibly Alberta, and I don't know of the Free Geek near there -- the closest I could think of would be the one in Vancouver, but they shut down in 2022. The one near me (https://www.freegeekarkansas.org/home) continues to provide free laptops and desktops, and I still drop off any hardware I don't have a plan to use there. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. I think the haptic part of my phone broke. It's turned on the settings, but sometime recently, I'm not getting any. I wonder what my next phone should be. I'd like something Android-ish, but as long as it can text, call, Signal, and Firefox, I'd be fine with something sans-Google. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…4xpq I send my federal income taxes directly to the federal government, my state couldn't withhold them if it wanted to. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…llgf Sounds spookily similar to the statement that "Cybertrucks burn/explode more frequently than the Ford Pinto, which was famously recalled for being a tinderbox". npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. So, I just became aware that https://lwn.net/Articles/1041694/ happened, so I'd like to hear from any #BSD users about which distribution will most closely match be 15-year experience with Debian. I don't think there's anything I won't consider giving up, but it would be really sweet to continue having access to #steam, #vlc, and #ktorrrent. I'm pretty comfortable on the command-line, but any hints / guides for moving from the modern Linux world to BSD will also be appreciated -- in case I need to "jump ship". npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…9ake You can try Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill the X session, tho it might require a doubled input. Shift+Alt+Fn might also get you to one of the terminals running the background. Alt+SysRq has a number of features that can sometimes get you to interactivity, though if you use some of the options, a reboot might be the fastest way to get your system back to "normal". But, I have had bad shaders hang my AMD card in such a way that the console was unrecoverable. In fact, I've sometimes needed a cold boot to really clear things up, with a warm boot bringing the system "back up" but without any video output from the AMD card. Best of luck! npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…pz2f Only the weirdos are here. I've been a programmer since 1985 (as a child), I've been an IT professional since 1995 (pulling wires and swapping cards and configuring MS Windows). I graduated from University of Arkansas Fayetteville with a BS in CS in December of 2003. A full resume is available. I currently require a 100% remote position. I cannot relocate from Cove, #Arkansas. I would prefer W-2 employment with a base salary of at least 130k USD/yr, plus some sort of retirement offering (401k or similar) and healthcare benefits (HDCP + HSA or similar). I prefer something where I can be a high-performing individual contributor: reading, writing and improving source text the majority of my day, with some time spent knowledge-sharing with other developers -- learning and teaching. I'd like to work with #Haskell, #Purescript, or #Idris as the primary source language. I've previously delivered value in Haskell, #Javascript, #SQL, #Python, #Scala, #Java, #C, and #Cxx among others. I can be productive in almost any language (no PHP, please; I promised myself never again). npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…59k6 My display is clearly 2 panels, because sometimes the color-depth will drop on the left panel and I can see dithering! A power-cycle of the display will clear that issue, but causes KDE Plasma to forget how to render some of my active applications. Toggling edit mode with them not minimized [to tray] will cause them to render again. Computers are weird these days. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…39ss Shaming has been shown to be more effective than shunning / silence. I think we can all agree that 2+2 > 3, so for safety we should operate as if 5 <= 2+2 <= 7." There's no false statements, not even an assert of knowledge, but not correcting it seems like too muted a response. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…wuyc I think it's likely we'll want currency for several more generations. It's just too useful in simplifying trading. We might see syndicates exist primarily to decide monetary policy for a currency they create / secure. Whether it's something normally civil but authoritarian (like income / wealth taxes), or ad-hoc "mobs" enforcing "sharing", we will end hoarding of wealth. Resources will be put to use, whether by their "owners" or via redistribution. All the needs and most of the wants of humanity will be available to all since they will be plentiful. Some resources will be scarce until we solve fusion plasma element extraction, automated molecular synthesis, and bootstrappable additive manufacturing. But, even those resources will be managed in a way to serve more than just an individual or family. ... Either that or climate collapse will destroy global society and we won't as a species be able to survive the next Chicvulub because we won't have access to surface petrochemicals. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…59k6 I say! npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…59k6 :blobfoxsad: I enjoyed both seasons we have so far and am hoping for more. I think it's some of the better "TV" we have right now, better (IMO!) than "The Studio". That said, I'd be open to hearing your views (even rants) on why you don't like it. I think I already posted a short summary of why I liked Season 1, but I'm not know for having the best taste in media. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…qcga Well, Cyberpunk 2020 (the table-top RPG) was my first introduction to the term, so I don't mind as much. (I never played it, but I played Shadowrun which had some community overlap.) The Edgerunners Netflix series (and that music video) are worth a watch, even if they are strongly tied to the game from CD Project Red, and not just cyberpunk in general. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…qcga Is this the character from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnnbP7pCIvQ or an OC? Just trying to explain that while Bob sees A cross the horizon at the same time that Bob crosses, they don't "bump into" each other. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @nprofile…e5g0 @nprofile…yu7x @nprofile…fa4k @nprofile…cnse @[email protected] Looking at https://www.gregegan.net/SCIENCE/Rindler/RindlerHorizon.html#FREEFALL and keeping in mind "Seeing" is along a 45degree angle down... (Imagine Bob leaving the ship sometime after A{dam/lice} does: a second vertical line) I think: Bob sees A cross the horizon at the same time Bob does, though at a different point on the horizon. A sees Bob cross the horizon after they do. But, Penrose diagrams still confuse the heck out of me, so I could be misreading that. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. $Diety, #Linux is getting just as reboot hungry as other OSes. Seems everytime I check there's a upgrade that requires restarting systemd-dbus or systemd-logind which kills my sessions and effectively requires a reboot OR an actual kernel upgrade. I just rebooted this morning, and checked for updates over lunch, and now it wants ANOTHER reboot. Maybe I should try KDE / XMonad on a BSD. Any suggestions? npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1jzg…hc3a @npub1wvd…e3kt https://pluralistic.net/tag/bluesky/ is probably a good start on the topic. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1jzg…hc3a @npub1wvd…e3kt @npub1hyk…3p33 has written about Bluesky's "decentralization" claims before and recently with some detail, and I tend to trust his analyses. My understanding is that there are some bits of the AT protocol that might be able to be freed from the single company, but currently if you get on the bad side of that company they can sever the link between you and your followers/audience. On mastodon, you can change instances without losing your audience/followers. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1alm…57vz Haven't there been cases where the panic reaction of the public from a disclosure caused more damage than that disclosure could have prevented? I don't think that merges in general are bad. It's just a commit topology like this is a good sign that none of the participants were considering the commit topology, so there's likely very little information that can be easily extracted from it. I think merges are actually preferred when the branches are parallel, independent work. That's unlikely to be the only reason for a topology this "wide". npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1upk…tcwy In this case, where the historical participants clearly have ignored the topology of history, I discard the details when doing analysis, because "counting trees" doesn't tell me the "health" of this "forest". I then *effectively* work with the linearization of history that git provides by default. Sometimes I _add_ --date-order but that's only after I narrow down to a much smaller tree, and want to consider "real time" instead of just topological order to try an give a "human" reason. npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1upk…tcwy * I don't really agree. It might make the part "git-bisect" does more complex, but I have the same experience testing commits. * So can a clean rebase. * I don't know what this means, but you can can git for a one-sided diff with ease. * rebasing can make actual history and commit history diverge in confusing ways, too. * That's not been my experience --date-order has always been there for me. But, I use both rebase and merge from time to time, so maybe I'm just used to the differences npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1n87…fvua @npub1ef3…5ag2 @npub1hyk…3p33 I have had be privilege of being able to force them to fire me (and then collect unemployment) because I refused to do something I found repugnant. But, as long as the final squash isn't too big, it's fine. The current branch I'm working on is 6k lines (so far), and going to be hard enough to review as separate commits. Impossible as a single squashed commit. While the feature could technically be broken down further, no smaller chunk could be independently used in production (for us+now master = production). npub1zuv22a8q9p5nes3d6r05pv36mutce8fr0d0dp3ul282a3y57pdpq79xhfn Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. @npub1zpu…qh6x U-Block Origin is now justified as anti-malware. I never claimed package managers could not be attacked, only that they are strictly superior to "download and run" process.
