Last Notes npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…n93w I appreciative stories where romantic couplings do not result in biological children. I'm on the other side of the same coin as you as neither me or my husband wanted children, and I get tired of the negative opinions people brazenly tell me about my choice because they see it as abnormal. This is why I prefer writing/reading about deep friendships, platonic relationships and found family because they're more relatable and rewarding for me. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox Finally! Of running hares and newly hatched life. The hare is a symbol of the moon, for the hare has a gestation period of 28 days. The Cosmic Egg is an ancient myth where all life began. Cakes have been baked for thousands of years with crosses upon them, representing the four quarters of the moon and offered to the moon goddesses. #SpringEquinox #Equinox #Ostara npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…n2fr a lot of fantasy themes in western literature are heavily influenced by the mythology of the Celtic nations. England is only any good for stealing historical spats between the royals (eg Games of Thrones is fantasy War of the Roses). npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…5tkd personal advertising has decided I’m no longer of breeding age and (thankfully) has stopped with all the baby ads and has now categorised me into the invisible woman perimenopause age. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox It’s not Roosevelt we’re dealing with either. When I pants and it’s beginning to all feel a bit scattered, I note down a rough outline of what I do want to keep and the unwritten things I’d like to happen. Pantsing is great for brainstorming ideas and exploring character personalities, but it’s very easy to go down wrong paths and have to keep backtracking. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox One to report and block. Led by Fox and Badger, they journey to a nature reserve where they know they’ll live in peace. Many die along the way. Very, very horribly. The one I clearly remember in the tv series is when the mice have a litter of babies and they’re picked off by a shrike, which impales them all on a blackthorn bush. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…n93w I do like foxes, and I certainly blame Colin Dann and his Animals of Farthing Wood series for instilling this as Fox was one of the main characters. Back inside, they await the public outcry, scrolling between the news and social media. One checks their photos recording their deed, and flinches. A shadowy group of women stand within the fallen branches. ‘They hanged witches in that tree,’ smirks his accomplice. He swipes. The women move closer, staring into the lens. A noise makes him turn. He photographs the empty space, and stares at the screen. #SundayLit npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox #SundayLitQ Q2. Omniscient POV. It’s a style I see more in classical works. I do like first and close third POV, but it is nice to not be stuck in a character’s brain and body all the time. For me, it is the beginning and ending of the year. It is life and death. Light and dark. New and old. Seeds need the cold and dark to thrive come spring, so I plant the seeds I wish to nurture in the coming year, and cull what no longer serves me and put it on the compost. When you think about it, the land is one giant rotting graveyard which sustains the living. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…mwjf I remember going onto Goodreads and being so relieved to find I wasn’t the only one to find Lila Bard from the Darker Shade of Magic trilogy to be the most unlikeable of protagonists. Usually, it’s because I’ve read an award winning novel that has had heaps of praise showered over it, and I’m looking to see if anyone else believed it was as rubbish as I thought it to be. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox #ScribesAndMakers Have you ever written a review of someone's creative work? I review ARCs through NetGalley fairly often. Personally, I don’t take much notice of online book reviews made by strangers. I’m more likely to pick up a book recommended through word of mouth in my social circles than by some random person on the internet. Besides, the blurb and the first page should be enough to keep me reading. No, I can’t afford to. I write on my laptop from my sofa. At most, I’ll find a spot on a local walk, take out my battered notebook, and see what my surroundings inspire. Does paying to go to a special location or a writing retreat make you a better writer? npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…0qap This has its downsides. I recognise story beats, spot the mcguffin and pick up on the foreshadowing early in the book/film/program. I find this especially on streaming services – I guess that’s because most people don’t watch the TV as they're looking at their phones so it’s spoon fed. I read a really good story recently, but I picked up on what the big plot twist would be early on and had to read through 150 pages waiting for someone to tell this to the main character.😩 @nprofile…009v npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…009v wow. For me the 31st October marks the beginning of winter and the new year. It's a time to honour the ancestors and the dead. A time to take stock. To plant the seeds/ideas which need the dark and cold in order to germinate once spring comes. It is a time to turn my gaze inward at the inner work I want to do. What inner housekeeping is needed? What do I want to clear out and what do I want to nurture? I feel my answers add nothing new and they rarely spark conversations, even when I’ve made an effort to comment on other people taking part. The character themed Qs are handy when I’m drafting something new, but otherwise I steer clear. Still, I’m regularly tempted to start a writing prompt as they don’t seem as popular here. I play with Welsh mythology in some of mine, but being Cornish I’m practically cousins with them, so there is a lot of overlap. But that is the case with a lot of folklore. The Wild Hunt is a good example. Their myth spans across much of Europe. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…myfn your last sentence is a good point. There’s a lot of romantasy about that relies on myth from Celtic cultures, which has irritated some seeing their culture reduced to fairy porn. There was even an American author using cultural names and not even bothering to learn how to pronounce them. Being from a Celtic nation I don’t have a problem reimagining and poking fun at it in my retellings. But I wouldn’t like to do this to another culture and if I did, I’d find sensitivity readers. npub1zwrtj4682lpyd9g0rfxc67pddja8q4smmh563n52s3gfgm97p5csfv7lnt Emma Cox @nprofile…myfn apparently maggots were a good protein source when we were hunter/gathers. Costs are so high that adults still love with parents because it’s too expensive to rent or buy. People are putting off having children because of costs.
