You know how, at the vegetable market, prices go up and down? Tomatoes are cheap when there are plenty. Tomatoes are expensive in the off-season. Nobody sits in an office and decides the price of tomatoes. It moves because thousands of buyers and sellers are haggling, every single day. That haggling — that's the real price. Nobody can lie to it for long.
Money works almost the same way. Every day, all over the world, there is one giant haggling — over the price of borrowing money. Banks, governments, big investors, even your local moneylender — all bargaining over what it costs to borrow and what it pays to lend. Nobody controls this. If a government spends foolishly, the lenders simply demand a higher price to lend to it — or refuse to lend at all. This has broken governments overnight. It is real. It bites.
But here's what most people don't know: there is one corner of this market that isn't haggled. It's fixed. Just a handful of officials, in one room, deciding one particular price — the rate banks charge each other overnight. No haggling. Just a decision, like the government fixing the price of one item — say, rice — while every other vegetable in the market is left to float freely.
And it doesn't stop there. Having fixed that one price, they lean on the whole market. They buy up huge amounts of government debt to keep demand high. They make promises about where prices will sit years from now. They quietly change the rules so banks are rewarded for buying government paper over anything else.
So — is this a real market, or a rigged one?
Both. That's the whole trick. It's a real bazaar, but one where a powerful buyer stands at the entrance with a bag of money, buying up tomatoes on purpose to keep the price from falling — and everyone else prices their own tomatoes around what he's doing.
And here's proof the bazaar is still a little bit alive: sometimes, the sellers revolt anyway. Britain found this out in one terrifying week in 2022. Their government made a promise the lenders didn't believe. The lenders simply said no — stopped buying, demanded a much higher price — and the currency crashed before lunch. That's the market, even rigged, biting back. It can still happen to anyone, even the richest countries, if they push too far.
But most days, nobody revolts. Most days, everyone just quietly prices around the powerful buyer at the gate — and after enough years, people forget he's even standing there. They start believing his price is the honest price.
So here's what really keeps me up at night. Not "the market is fake." Something smaller, and much more worrying:
If even a rigged bazaar can, on its worst day, throw the rigger out on his ear — what does that tell you about the price you're paying quietly, every ordinary day, without ever asking who's standing at the gate? And how long can he keep his thumb on the scale before people notice — right up until the morning they suddenly, all at once, do?
