**A Long Cloud on Mars**

Explanation: Explanation: What’s causing this unusually long cloud on Mars ? Known as the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) and first recorded by NASA’s Viking Orbiter 2 in 1977, the strange cloud has been imaged in greater detail more recently by ESA ’s robotic Mars Express spacecraft. The featured image is from 2018. The cloud forms only during spring and summer seasons and then only during morning hours. Made of water-ice, the most familiar process that causes cloud crystals to form around bits of dust would fail due to the thinness and lack of dust high in the Martian atmosphere . Leading speculation holds that dust is not involved. After the cloud forms near the volcano Arsia Mons , wind blows the cloud downstream — creating a tail that can extend over 1500 kilometers. Efforts to better understand AMEC s will continue, an understanding that may bolster a more complete view of cloud formation on Earth . Tomorrow's picture: eyeing a cat

I'm the one who programs our jukebox; the sextant. I also light the dozens of candles and set up the table for communion and train the younger altar servers and herd the first communion children around. The little ones are like a gaggle of geese. 😂
I turn it off and ring manually during the Mass. We use #5 for the death bell, #5-#2 for minor Masses, and #5-#1 for high Masses. After celebratory Masses, we ring the bells for 15 minutes, otherwise 5 minutes. The bells go silent on Maundy Thursday and we use wooden ratchets until Easter.
It's 6:01, so they're ringing now. I am usually awake before they begin.
When people hear that the death bell tolls, they come up to the parish billboard, to see whose death has been announced.
Before they had that (and before the mechanical ringer that predated the electronic one), you had to climb the bell tower and ring, every quarter hour, so the sacristan lived in the parish house. Now, only the priest lives there, with any visiting deacons or speakers.
People in the village used wind their clocks to match their church bell, which was recalibrated daily according to the solar clock. But the bells of the various churches rang at slightly different times, so it was a cacophony. We can hear the neighboring village bell, on some days.
And at the Angelus (18:30) everyone would stop working for the day and pray, and then go home for supper. A lot of people tell their kids to come home when the Angelus rings. You can hear it throughout the town.
A place without bells seems weird to me, now.

🇦🇺 THE EMPIRE LEFT. THE ORG CHART SURVIVED.
https://media.damagebdd.com/9e21ea6c5833f0d298f2ccbf5d52ab5877d8a82b9b012baddf28306e32a5dade.jpg
Twenty Years in Australia to Discover Who Really Runs the Machinery.
Took me twenty years to realise something extraordinary about Australia.
This country is incredibly wealthy.
And remarkably poor in some of the things that build industrial greatness.
Minerals. Land. Property. Financial assets. Enormous accumulated wealth.
But engineering investment? Industrial complexity? Commercialising breakthrough technology?
Suddenly, everyone's a little tight-arsed.
WELCOME TO THE RICHEST POOR INDUSTRIAL ECONOMY IN THE ROOM.
Australia achieved complete legislative independence from Britain in 1986.
Magnificent.
The British Parliament lost its authority.
The colonial administrators departed.
The flag stayed.
The property titles remained.
And somehow, the managerial operating system survived almost entirely intact.
THE EMPIRE LEFT. THE ORG CHART STAYED.
Think about the architecture.
We extract raw materials.
We accumulate property wealth.
We import sophisticated machinery.
We commission consultants.
We appoint managers.
And when somebody proposes building genuinely advanced technology?
"Interesting. Have you considered applying for a government grant?"
Good heavens.
Australia has brilliant engineers, outstanding researchers and capable entrepreneurs.
But the national business R&D effort remains relatively weak, and the economy's export complexity is surprisingly low for such a wealthy country.
Meanwhile, the financial system has developed an extraordinary ability to turn existing land into increasingly expensive assets.
THE PROPERTY PORTFOLIO COMPOUNDS.
THE ENGINEERING CAPABILITY APPLIES FOR FUNDING.
And here's the historical irony.
Britain no longer governs Australia.
It doesn't need to.
Australia inherited the legal institutions, administrative traditions and much of the prestige architecture.
Then Australians made their own decisions about what to preserve.
Some of that inheritance works brilliantly.
Other parts deserve a serious engineering review.
Because political independence isn't the same as industrial self-sufficiency.
And having enormous national wealth isn't the same as knowing how to turn it into globally competitive technology.
SOVEREIGNTY IS HAVING ROOT ACCESS.
INDUSTRIAL INDEPENDENCE IS KNOWING WHAT TO DO WITH IT.
Australia has had the keys for decades.
Perhaps it's time to stop polishing the colonial dashboard and start upgrading the machinery underneath.
Not because Britain is secretly running the country.
Because we're independent enough to stop blaming the previous administrators.
THE COLONIAL OPERATING SYSTEM IS LEGACY SOFTWARE.
THE COUNTRY HAS ROOT ACCESS.
WHO'S GOING TO REWRITE THE FUCKING SYSTEM?
Oh, very good, old chap.

> "Basic necessities" is inherently subjective
As is the interpretation of any statistic. But it doesn’t matter for the purpose of this sort of comparison. You select a few items to fill the basket and see which ones fall sort.
Still, if you are convinced Brazil is so better, then why don’t you move here?
