No NIP covers this yet. I went through the NIPs index today and there is no entry for certificates or TLS. What exists is NIP-05: one file on your own domain saying this name belongs to this pubkey. That stops exactly where the trouble starts, because DNS proves who you are and never which signature you should trust.
eMudhra is the clean illustration. Those keys were not stolen. Eight intermediates were generated in April 2025 with a single byte of randomness, so their private keys could be derived from the public certificates. Revoked on 18 October. Every subscriber of that CA inherited a key generation process nobody outside could audit.
A Nostr version of this is narrower than a CA. Publish your certificate fingerprint in a signed event, let clients check it against the npubs they already follow, and a swapped fingerprint becomes loud instead of silent. First contact stays unsolved: a self-signed cert is worth nothing until you already know the key, and no browser trust store accepts a npub as an authority.
