Oh man, this reminds me as my birthday is approaching how I last minute found myself at my friend's festival an hour up the road of my birthplace in Europe.

I'd met him at a party 10 years ago in Northern CA. This was quite the party, the whole hotel was reserved for this annual harvest party (wonder if @npub1wwu…7lcn knows of or has been to it? It's in your neck of the woods) and several people at that party had been in my home country just weeks before to this festival. So people were insisting I meet the producer who was also there. Soon after we lived in the same gold country town and every year I received an invite to go as literally a whole posse from my CA gold country town would visit my home country to play at and party their ass of in my favorite mountain. A few of them even bought a couple homes in the local village.
Well last year I unexpectedly found myself in my home country for much longer than I'd planned. I'd totally spaced out on the festival until a saw an IG story of a friend flying in from Israel. It was my birthday weekend.
I hit up my friend and he said stop by if you'd like. So two days into the festival I found myself up on the mountain partying with friends from Cali. It was pretty magical. I'd checked out the site in 2020 when the festival was canceled so had an idea but it was a whole other experience with all the people, the lights, the multiple stages in the woods, three houses, lights, fairy vibes and all.
I never ever barely stay for sunrise at any festivals I've gone to. By 2-5 am I am sound asleep. So this was quite the special moment. Last day, sunrise set witnessing the morning fog disolving over the magical peaks of my favorite mountain moving and shaking my body to good music and company. All my favorite things in one place.
It was a well deserved birthday celebration.

Dow Jones Industrial Average Closes Above 40,000 for the First Time, Driven by Lighter-Than-Expected US Inflation
===============
#61d04924 ver:1.46
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 40,000 for the first time, driven by lighter-than-expected US inflation and optimism about potential interest rate cuts. The milestone signifies confidence in the US economy's strength and ability to recover. However, caution is advised due to geopolitical factors and market valuation. The Dow's significance is limited for individual investors, who tend to focus on broader measures like the S&P 500. Indian markets also saw gains. Analysts expect stocks to continue rising in 2024 with strong earnings and lower interest rates. #DowJones #StockMarket #USinflation #InterestRates #Economy...

Václav Havel, “The Power of the Powerless” (1978)
“An examination of the potential of the ‘powerless’ can only begin with an examination of the nature of power in the circumstances in which these powerless people operate.”
…
“The post-totalitarian system touches people at every step, but it does so with its ideological gloves on. This is why life in the system is so thoroughly permeated with hypocrisy and lies: government by bureaucracy is called popular government; the working class is enslaved in the name of the working class; the complete degradation of the individual is presented as his ultimate liberation; depriving people of information is called making it available; the use of power to manipulate is called the public control of power, and the arbitrary abuse of power is called observing the legal code; the repression of culture is called its development; the expansion of imperial influence is presented as support for the oppressed; the lack of free expression becomes the highest form of freedom; farcical elections become the highest form of democracy; banning independent thought becomes the most scientific of world views; military occupation becomes fraternal assistance. Because the regime is captive to its own lies, it must falsify everything. It falsifies the past. It falsifies the present, and it falsifies the future. It falsifies statistics. It pretends not to possess an omnipotent and unprincipled police apparatus. It pretends to respect human rights. It pretends to persecute no one. It pretends to fear nothing. It pretends to pretend nothing.
Individuals need not believe all these mystifications, but they must behave as though they did, or they must at least tolerate them in silence, or get along well with those who work with them. For this reason, however, they must live within a lie. They need not accept the lie. It is enough for them to have accepted their life with it and in it. For by this very fact, individuals confirm the system, fulfill the system, make the system, are the system.”

Bitcoiners Should Be Catholic
With skepticism and moral relativism more prevalent than ever, it's unsurprising that people are inclined to think one's religion has the same level of importance as a favorite sports team. However, everything in life is ordered toward a highest intrinsic good. It is vital to acknowledge what that good is. The Catholic deposit of faith supports principles Bitcoiners cherish, agreeing on what is truly good.
We believe in objective truth.
A signature is valid, or it's not; a transaction is confirmed or not; a block is accepted or not. These are the fundamental objective truths that form the basis of Bitcoin. These truths are not subjective to personal judgment or the whims of politicians. Grounded in mathematics, Bitcoin takes its form in the objective reality of the universe. Yet, many people today don't believe there are objective truths, or at least, if there are objective truths, they think we can't know what they are. However, it is contradictory to say it is true that there is no truth. Objective truth describes reality, so it is true or false for everyone. Since religion, properly understood, describes reality, its central claims are objective and can be investigated. Any religion worth pursuing puts objective truth in the middle of its dogmas. Catholics believe “Man tends by nature toward the truth.” (CCC 2467) Central to the Christian claim is that God is the truth: “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6). Bitcoiners are some of the only people in our secular world who understand objective truth.
We believe in solidarity.
A society maintains a proper monetary order when the hardest money becomes the only money (Copernicus-Gresham's Law). Furthermore, Bitcoin is a consensus protocol. The network rules bind every participant together, and we all share in the fruits of the network. Users, miners, and developers depend on each other to maintain the network's health. Similarly, the Church teaches all creation orders toward solidarity: "Interdependence must be transformed into solidarity, based upon the principle that the goods of creation are meant for all." (Sollicitudo rei Socialis 39) Humans are social animals who flourish in a community bound together toward common objectives. Bitcoiners intuitively grasp this fundamental Catholic social teaching.
We believe in subsidiarity.
While the Bitcoin network is a shared resource for the common good, it is not a collectivist enterprise. Not your keys, not your coins, flows from the ethic of subsidiarity: “A community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving the latter of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to coordinate its activity with the activities of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good.” (Centesimus annus 48) Fiat currencies have perverted this principle by introducing the unnatural institution of the central bank. Bitcoin rightly reorders money management back to the lowest level of society: the family, who can hold their keys to save, earn, spend, and invest their own money with sovereignty. Finally, “the principle of subsidiarity is opposed to all forms of collectivism. It sets limits for state intervention. It aims at harmonizing the relationships between individuals and societies. It tends toward the establishment of true international order.” (CCC 1885) Bitcoiners understand the proper international order Catholics have been discussing for centuries and are working toward making it a reality.
Bitcoiners should discern the Catholic faith to deepen their understanding of these principles that resonate deeply with the ethos of Bitcoin. Catholicism offers more than a belief system. It provides a path to spiritual fulfillment and a community grounded in timeless truths, with teachings that will always be true, like the immutable ledgers we keep on our full nodes. Joining the Catholic Church means embracing a tradition that stands the test of time and offers profound purpose and social cohesion in accordance with the eternal law. Join our journey to seek the truth.

Don't blame the consultants. They don't "stick around" because the companies push them out. I should say that I, at least, never bring in an army of consultants to help me. Instead, I train local employees to do the work that army would have done, and help them get good enough at it that they can teach others. I want to leave value in my wake, not come in and "solve the problem for you" (good luck with that) and leave. All the good consultants I know do that. Of course, the all work as individuals, so the big corporations that need them the most won't hire them. The big corps only hire big (incompetent) consultancies. I guess they like shoveling millions down a whole to satisfy their golf buddies.

There can never be development without peace - Wa West DCE
==========
Vida Diorotey, Wa West District Chief Executive (DCE), emphasized the crucial link between peace and development during an inception workshop on the Peace Building Fund (PBF) project. The workshop, held in Wechaiu, involved three communities from the district. The project, a joint initiative by the UNFPA and UNDP, aims to prevent and address the root causes of conflicts and vulnerabilities to violent extremism in Northern Ghana. Diorotey highlighted the importance of peace for development, stating that without peace, any development would be impossible. The project seeks to engage stakeholders and gather their views on shaping the project for expected outcomes. Rita Nyarko, the focal person for the implementation partner at the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, emphasized the critical role of women and youth in maintaining and promoting peace. The project aims to foster peace and stability in the Upper West, Upper East, and North East regions of Ghana.

In a 12-point Communique, North-east Governors Decry Neglect of Region, Demand Allocation of Capital Projects
==========
Governors of the six North-east states issue a 12-point communique, decrying the neglect of the region and calling on the federal government to address the issue of sidelining the zone in the allocation of capital projects. The North-east is adjudged the least developed region in the country, compounded by the Boko Haram crisis. The governors express concern over the neglect of the Northeast in the allocation of federal government capital projects and the poor state of infrastructure, particularly the Enugu-Maiduguri highway. They demand the inclusion of the North-east in all National Development Plans and initiatives, as well as the reconstruction of basic infrastructure along the Enugu-Maiduguri Economic Corridor. The governors also express dismay at the blackout experienced by the region and the nonchalant attitude of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in addressing the issue. They call on the federal government to direct TCN to take immediate action and plan to set up a solar power plant in each state. The governors highlight the vulnerability and disadvantage of the North-east for industrial development and economic growth, with over 70% of its population below 35 years of age. They call for the extension of the 330KV transmission line and the maximization of existing hydropower generated in Kashimbilla and Dadin Kowa dam. The North-east Development Commission (NEDC) is urged to be consultative in its dealings and project prioritization.

Yuck: Slack has been scanning your messages to train its AI models
https://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims?image_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fs.yimg.com%2Fos%2Fcreatr-uploaded-images%2F2024-05%2Fc9fb70d0-1476-11ef-9a35-477d7506414a&resize=1400%2C787&client=19f2b5e49a271b2bde77&signature=b73bdca5d4bc5525eeb8ccc619008c238a6b709a
Slack trains machine-learning models on user messages, files and other content without explicit permission. The training is opt-out, meaning your private data will be leeched by default. Making matters worse, you’ll have to ask your organization’s Slack admin (human resources, IT, etc.) to email the company to ask it to stop. (You can’t do it yourself.) Welcome to the dark side of the new AI training data gold rush.
Corey Quinn, an executive at DuckBill Group, spotted the policy in a blurb in Slack’s Privacy Principles and posted about it on X (via PCMag). The section reads (emphasis ours), “To develop AI/ML models, our systems analyze Customer Data (e.g. messages, content, and files) submitted to Slack as well as Other Information (including usage information) as defined in our Privacy Policy and in your customer agreement.”
In response to concerns over the practice, Slack published a blog post on Friday evening to clarify how its customers’ data is used. According to the company, customer data is not used to train any of Slack’s generative AI products — which it relies on third-party LLMs for — but is fed to its machine learning models for products “like channel and emoji recommendations and search results.” For those applications, the post says, “Slack’s traditional ML models use de-identified, aggregate data and do not access message content in DMs, private channels, or public channels.”
A Salesforce spokesperson reiterated this in a statement to Engadget, also saying that “we do not build or train these models in such a way that they could learn, memorize, or be able to reproduce customer data.”
I'm sorry Slack, you're doing fucking WHAT with user DMs, messages, files, etc? I'm positive I'm not reading this correctly. pic.twitter.com/6ORZNS2RxC
— Corey Quinn (@QuinnyPig) May 16, 2024
The opt-out process requires you to do all the work to protect your data. According to the privacy notice, “To opt out, please have your Org or Workspace Owners or Primary Owner contact our Customer Experience team at [email protected] with your Workspace/Org URL and the subject line ‘Slack Global model opt-out request.’ We will process your request and respond once the opt out has been completed.”
The company replied to Quinn’s message on X: “To clarify, Slack has platform-level machine-learning models for things like channel and emoji recommendations and search results. And yes, customers can exclude their data from helping train those (non-generative) ML models.”
How long ago the Salesforce-owned company snuck the tidbit into its terms is unclear. It’s misleading, at best, to say customers can opt out when “customers” doesn’t include employees working within an organization. They have to ask whoever handles Slack access at their business to do that — and I hope they will oblige.
Inconsistencies in Slack’s privacy policies add to the confusion. One section states, “When developing Al/ML models or otherwise analyzing Customer Data, Slack can’t access the underlying content. We have various technical measures preventing this from occurring.” However, the machine-learning model training policy seemingly contradicts this statement, leaving plenty of room for confusion.
In addition, Slack’s webpage marketing its premium generative AI tools reads, “Work without worry. Your data is your data. We don’t use it to train Slack AI. Everything runs on Slack’s secure infrastructure, meeting the same compliance standards as Slack itself.”
In this case, the company is speaking of its premium generative AI tools, separate from the machine learning models it’s training on without explicit permission. However, as PCMag notes, implying that all of your data is safe from AI training is, at best, a highly misleading statement when the company apparently gets to pick and choose which AI models that statement covers.
Update, May 18 2024, 3:24 PM ET: This story has been updated to include additional information from Slack, which published a blog post explaining its practices in response to the community's concerns.

Meditation is not about turning off your thoughts (good luck with that), it's about redirecting them. If you catch yourself drifting away 20 times in a 5 minute meditation and you bring yourself back 20 times, that's a successful meditation, not a failure. As long as you stay focused on what you want to focus on and catch the mind when it drifts away, you are meditating. It's called a practice because like any other skill or exercise, the more you work at it, the easier it gets. And when you get good at it during your designated meditation time, you find yourself using it all day long. Just like weight lifting makes you stronger in general, meditation makes you mindful in every area of your life.

Ultimately, it looks like a stripped down Debian build. BIOS is for their proprietary systems; my laptop still has its BIOS after the install. There appears to be limited hardware recognition (including wifi adapters). I haven’t dug into it much to this point, and trust the Start9 team based on my limited trust circle. But I could dive into it if I had time.
I like SBCs too. Although I don’t have any RISC-V ones at this point, but I could check it out on an ARM SBC at some point.
I use the laptop because it was unused, has sufficient tech, has a decent battery, and other laptop benefits.

Arab Countries, Including Morocco, to Participate in Future Peace Mission in Gaza
===============
#f75da1df ver:0.28
Arab countries, including Morocco, will participate in a future peace mission in Gaza led by the United States. The goal is to establish a peacekeeping force composed exclusively of Arab countries to guide the transition process and pressure Israel towards peace. Saudi Arabia has chosen not to join. Former President Trump criticizes Israel's war strategy and President Biden's lack of support. The vulnerability of Israel is discussed, and the US potential to lead on trade is highlighted. Gen. Wesley Clark warns that Iran may strike indirectly to avoid direct attribution. The US is raising tariffs on Chinese imports, Berlin explores tax breaks for longer working hours, Putin invests in Russia's armed forces, and Trump allies rally around him. #Gaza #PeaceMission #Israel #ArabCountries #Trade...

These, in turn, have been used by proprietary operating systems, including Apple's macOS and iOS, which derived from them[2] and Microsoft Windows XP, which used (at least) part of its TCP/IP code, which was legal.[3][better source needed] Code from FreeBSD was also used to create the operating systems for the PlayStation 5,[4] PlayStation 4,[5] PlayStation 3,[6] PlayStation Vita,[7] and Nintendo Switch.[8][9]

I think this is a great idea. And I have a solution to the bootstrap problem.
The solution is: interpretation of proxy data “as if” it were NIP-77 formatted data. For example, if you “like” a wikifreedia article filed under Category X, my software interprets that “as if” you issued a NIP-77 attestation, to that author, in the context of X. But since like != trust (well, maybe it does and maybe it doesn’t, I have no way of knowing), I “interpret” a really low confidence, like maybe 1% or 5%. That way, we start out with a sea of NIP-77-formatted trust data. And you’ll know that if you REALLY trust someone in some context, like if I REALLY trust @npub1a2c…w83a to write wikifreedia articles on economics, and if I want my app to give an added boost to her other content and I’m OK with saying this publicly, then I’m gonna have to issue an actual NIP-77 attestation and set the confidence to something more meaningful than 1% or 5%. In this way, the pool of high quality contextual trust attestations can accumulate gradually.

Yes, i think most people here are pro bitcoin but some find it a bit much. Especially when it's not really content and just saying slogans over and over, not sure this is all that interesting is it? (I mean, I've even see people from bitcoin twitter have been put off by this on nostr lol, imagine). I think i see it as borderline zapfarming. Besides you will probably definitely see content of an interesting bitcoin post because it will be reposted like mad, there's not much chance of that going amiss. I would add all the slogans to mute, ideally. In a feed like this imo. Ideally I would also have some sort of detection to mute image posts of ai bitcoin art. (Just reeling off what I would ideally have lol, not saying you should do this or whether it's even possible.)
I think with major price moves there should be a special feed lol. Nostr is pretty much unusable at those times.
I think a lot of this will be solved with topic feeds? I don't know :)

2H24 iPhone 16 series case color prediction
iPhone 16 Pro & Pro Max: black, white (or silver), grey (I think it's natural titanium), rose
iPhone 16 & 16 Plus: black, green, pink, blue, white
Apple may rename colors (e.g., previously called white as starlight). Also, even if the color name is the same as the existing model, it may look different.

Yeah, I've heard of the expectation of getting things for "free" as being part of the fiat, Web 2.0 mindset.
I'm no fan of a subscription model either, but I think I could get with a pay per use model, which I don't see as the same exact thing. Like if I want to read a particular article or note/post, I might be willing to pay for that with a micro-payment of a few sats, possibly. I'm not sure, though, because it hasn't really been tested, to my knowledge.

DECISION MAKING
The next time you feel intimidated by the prospect of making a choice and you don't feel anything in your heart one way or the other, just keep quiet, but without waiting for something to appear. You are going to have to bear some discomfort for a bit because something inside will not want to experience that feeling of not knowing. Something wants to go, but just sit with that uneasiness.
Remain as awareness itself. Then, at some point, everything will calm down. A kind of recognition rather than a decision may enter your heart. The way forward may clearly manifest, and you simply move in a certain direction.
