In Aristotle’s virtue ethics, “bearing fruit” can be understood as the formation of virtue. Human beings are not naturally complete; they must be “shaped” through habits, discipline, and experience. “Pruning” resembles the process of removing bad habits so that virtue can grow stronger.
From an existentialist perspective, this passage can be read as a reminder that human nature is not fixed. We either create “value” through our actions (bearing fruit), or fall into meaninglessness if we fail to define ourselves. “Being cut off” symbolizes the loss of meaning when one does not choose and take responsibility for one’s life.
In pragmatism, “bearing fruit” corresponds to what produces practical results and value. Systems (whether individuals or societies) naturally adjust: what no longer works is removed, and what is effective is refined to produce better outcomes.

John 15:2 (KJV) is part of a passage where Jesus uses the imagery of the vine and branches to describe the relationship between Himself and humanity.
