On August 9, 2002, 187 years after her death, the remains of the Black enslaved woman Saartjie Baartman were returned to South Africa; she had been kidnapped and humiliatingly exhibited by 🇪🇺 Europe's "human zoos".
Her painful story recalls the suffering of Black African women at the hands of white racist Western colonial monsters and the brutality of the slavery they perpetrated.
Baartman was born in South Africa in 1789; there she was enslaved on a plantation and completely illiterate when she was sold in 1810 to the 🇬🇧 British colonist William Dunlop, who saw an opportunity to create a human zoo and exhibit her in a cage like a "simian."
In London, she was exhibited by Dunlop in a human zoo, locked in a cage where she was forced to show herself naked to white people, and for a modest fee, they were allowed to touch her and sexually assault her in front of hundreds of men.
The mistreatment of Saartjie in London was so severe that there were even street protests to stop that humiliating treatment, and it even ended up in a trial for torture; the racist criminal who bought her, William Dunlop, promised her freedom if she testified in the trial that she had not been mistreated, and Sara agreed to it.
After escaping the sentence, the slave trader Dunlop broke his promise and sold Saartjie to another criminal, a French 🇫🇷 animal tamer who exhibited her in another human zoo for 15 months in Paris, going so far as to rape her and leave her pregnant.
In 1815, during one of her humiliating exhibitions in Paris, she caught the attention of 🇫🇷 French scientists, particularly that of George Cuvier, who saw a "perfect specimen" to prove white supremacist theories that "Blacks come from simians and are inferior to whites."
Saartjie was bought by Cuvier... but again, to be exhibited like an animal at the prestigious Royal Academy of Medicine in Paris, where they forced her to show herself naked before a hundred scientists amid comments like "I've never seen a human head so similar to that of a simian."
In late 1815, after suffering all kinds of abuse for 5 years, Saartjie Baartman ended up wandering absolutely alone through the streets of Paris, in destitution, ill, and with her body shattered, dying on December 29, 1815, at just 25 years old.
Even after she was dead, they continued to humiliate her; the French scientist Cuvier made a plaster cast of her body, and her skeleton, brain, and genitals were on public display in the Musée de l'Homme in Paris for more than 160 years.... It wasn't until 1994 that France deigned to remove her remains from public view, and it wasn't until 2002 that she was repatriated and buried in South Africa 🇿🇦.
The 🇬🇧 🏴 British and 🇫🇷 French colonialists killed her in just 5 years after leaving Africa, through beatings, rapes, and psychological humiliation.
This is the story of Saartjie, but also of millions of nameless African women, murdered and abused by Western colonialism... those same ones who today talk about invasions of immigrants and say they can't welcome people who don't respect their culture—well, this is their culture.
