I always recommend having a good set of knives to people!
I use Damascus steel knives (Shun) at home but you need to be careful with them cause they can be fragile. Especially the tips.
Wusthof are a great everyday knife. They would survive a nuclear war!
If you bump up your budget go the icon range. They are a more balanced knife, lighter and the handle is rounded so they are more comfortable in the hand.
