It depends on the plant. Perennials get mulched with it and annuals get a fresh start each year with compost mixed in the native soil unless it's a melon, in which case they get mounds of 100% compost. And in my compost is lots and lots of used Starbucks coffee grounds...note that native soil is on the alkaline side.
