yeah, chinese characters are technically more space efficient, but suck to learn and use.
Remembering The Kanji is supposedly a great book for learning kanji and it does seem to systematically break them down quite well, however it uses mnemonics to help you remember which I always found extremely cumbersome. We'll see how kanji goes if I ever get around to it.
