jb55 (npub1xts…kk5s) I’m curious to hear your thoughts about how localization should work in Damus.
Certainly, Damus should be internationalized so that it can be localized to non-English locales at a minimum. That part seems pretty straightforward.
However, as non-English speakers onboard to nostr, there will be some people who won’t understand English notes and some people who won’t understand non-English notes. Is this an issue that should be solved by Damus?
There’s no iOS / macOS translation SDK supplied by Apple. Twitter solves this by integrating with the Google Cloud Translation API, which is a paid service for $20 USD per million characters (free for first 500k characters).
I’m guessing we don’t want to tie Damus to a closed source paid platform controlled by a corporation. I’m not familiar with alternatives, but a quick search yields https://libretranslate.com/ which is open source, $29 per month for the hosted option, and can also be self-hosted.
I’m pretty interested in the localization space so this came to my mind today, and might be interested in contributing there.
