There have been break-ins at Finnish water reservoirs / pumping stations, as well as unauthorized people at some other facilities. I wouldn't consider it at all implausible that the similar but seemingly disconnected incidents are also product of online recruitment, not unlike these cases of arson.

I was there developing micropayments - though a single-publisher system rather than a networked one. There are three interconnected reasons they didn't become a thing:
- "frictionless" was not, so critical mass was unattainable
- no one.would give up the ads anyway, so it would have been both
- to operate the network, someone would have collected MORE data - but those who recognized data as the thing they want, also recognized ads as an easier vehicle

Yes, you can have the opinion that ads suck and you want to see none. It's true, a lot of ads do suck, and a lot of them are for products and services which suck, because, frankly, it's cheaper to advertise a bad product to fool people to spend their money on one, than to develop good products. And even the good ones need advertising.
Without ads, the sites you visit and the content you read, watch and listen to, couldn't be done. The people making it get paid mostly from those ad budgets.

This has no effect whatsoever on the side of the process used to select which ads you see (targeting). Mostly, that's still today based on those invasive profile collectors that bug you for permission in every cookie dialog (and often collect your browsing behavior even if you denied the consent, because most publishers don't test that at all).
Of course, ads could also be selected by other means. Matched to content, or approximating your location by IP address, or time of day, or...

Meta and Google (and Apple, and Amazon, and most smaller ad networks) use the same tooling for both, so they're frequently confused.
But when attribution is tracked and counted by the campaign rather than person, and only to a limited number of "buckets" (so that it's not possible to subvert by counting each displayed ad as its own campaign), the user stays anonymous.
This is what the Firefox PPA attempts. Also what Chrome and Safari do, but using corporate tracking servers.

I feel it would be helpful for people to understand that "tracking" ad performance (attribution) is not the same thing as tracking people (frequently used for targeting ads).
The former enables an advertiser to understand which of their campaigns (often mumerous simultaneously) work to bring them visibility and traffic, and doesn't *need* to invade privacy.
The latter collects individual profiles in order to drive bidding and ad selection and can be incredibly invasive to people's privacy.

From the wild end of uses: pull a new 1-wire cable with temperature and moisture sensors through the channels using the old cabling, get early warning information of the health of the building. Or just use the old wiring itself, if the connector locations make sense for acquiring the data. 1-wire can be connecter in series and old phone cabling is plenty good for it, unlike for most other uses.

It's rest day for Toud de France today. An upset at the head of the race yesterday, and i expect another upset at the start of it tomorrow.
While it's good that mask mandate has come back after several COVID withdrawals (some through symtoms, some through testing which never stopped, apparently), I'm not so sure the awful televised masking protocols including under-chin surgicals and FFP2 worn only halfway set a good example to anyone.

Honestly, the ad market may be technologically complex but the actors are incredibly primitive. It's not that many years since the easiest way to gain a cost/targeting edge was to not release the whole daily ad budget at once - majority of the market flooded channels in the first hours of a day, and later hours were significantly cheaper. That no longer is a thing (I don't think) but the marketing hacks of today are not much more sophisticated.

It's not trying to solve those problems, though. They're primarily ad transparency and targeting issues, where this Firefox PPA is strictly limited to providing attribution data. Transparency should be a regulatory requirement for ad networks, and should also cover their targeting decisions, at the very least after the fact.

I read some of the background and technical explainer of the #Firefox 128 #PrivacyPreservingAttribution #PPA experiment, and as a replacement for tracking done via third party cookies or similar, this is pretty good. It also seems better than Chrome's version, because it's vendor neutral and doesn't put Google in an advantageous position.

That said, a 100 hectare ie 1km² forest will not only _today_ deliver what those DAC plants promise to do in the future, it will also be a living environment for hundreds, if not thousands of species and a special place for a lot of people, too. Or if it's 10000 hectares.somewhere remote, it'll be a small 10x10 km wildlife sanctuary with as much CO2 removal power as 100 of the DAC plants... With today's tech.

Different issue. I believe it came as a surprise to everyone that the Dragon trunks didn't actually burn during deorbit. That said, SpaceX should plan their jettison so that they'd splash down instead of fall on people. Whereas Ariadne _failed_ to perform a _planned_ operation it is _specifically designed_ to successfully execute. That capability for multiple relights via a repressurization power unit is a capability that's supposed to set the single-use rocket apart.

What's been bugging me about these Falcon 9 stories this week: the Falcon 9 did not fail. It lifted its payload to space exactly as planned followed by a 19th successful, clean landing for reuse.
The second stage Merlin also worked fine for its first engine ignition - so performed about as well as most other lift vehicles, ever.
What failed was the 2nd ignition for an orbital change.
Also, the Ariane 6 first flight didn't complete its planned orbital maneuvers.

Fully open lists - so the establishment obviously decides who is on the list, but doesn't decide who is apportioned votes. The person with most support gets total vote count, the next one half, and so on down in popularity order.
This enables voters to decide the top of the list, but also carries the risk of sudden upset, if a down-list candidate with fringe ideas is an unexpectedly popular vote.

List voting has also, more times than I could count after the fact, led me to not vote for my favorite candidate because too many on the same list have been absolutely abhorrent. It has also meant MUCH more research into not just the candidates but their total lists to avoid bad choices. At least in the Finnish D'Hondt system, the establishment doesn't decide who the top of the list is.
Again, the choice is always for the least bad option.

I can not recall a single election I've been eligible to vote it where i would have enthusiastically cast mine for a prefect candidate. That person is never available, and if they were, someone would dig up dirt to show they're not perfect.
Every election is about picking the least-bad option and trying to ensure the worst doesn't come to pass. Sometimes it's good enough to aim for "let's vote again in a few years".

The kremlin has moved a project 22870 ship from Novorossiysk to Ochamchire, Georgia, the sister ship of which was involved as an air defense platform in the occupation of Snake Island. Though the Abkhazia sepatists announced this development already in October of last year, this is apparently the first larger navy asset placed there, presumably as safe harbor.

This chart, in its various iterations, will never cease to amaze me. Energy analysts have failed to correctly forecast solar installation scale and acceleration for many decades and never seem to learn that a linear projection doesn't work for an accelerating development.

Not enough. If it was, the russian war would already be over. We're still funding and supplying their aggression while tying the defender with unreasonable restrictions. We're still dragging our feet in support. We're afraid that bad guys actually lose. And we're tolerating their information warfare in our own societies.

Yes, they are. The DNC, and by extension the Biden campaign, is extremely afraid of making any missteps that would alienate a single potential voter. They would rather miss their largest opportunities than take one bit of risk. I've watched all of the prez campaigns of my adult life as an interested outsider and that certainly is my impression.
Meanwhile, RNC invented the PAC-driven attack ad.

Why, you ask? Because there absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to win doing so. Harris is _good_ at that. She's also a former prosecutor, readily capable of tearing a convicted felon to pieces. And she needs to up visibility. Either she needs to be a very prominent VP, or she needs to all of a sudden be a credible top-of-the-ticlet candidate.
And Biden? Biden is good at talking about positive things - far less so attacking, or responding to attacks.

It occurs to me that if the US Democrats had any meme game to them, what they should do is launch Harris on a tour of non stop Trump ridicule while Biden goes on his own tour of "here's what we've done and what we're going to do". Today Harris continues to be completely invisible and Biden doesn't do the latter role to its full effect.
But if the DNC had any meme game to them, Hillary wouldn't have lost to Trump in 2016.
