I write and think about culture (for fun and to pay my rent). My obsessive interest is people and how we work, individually and collectively, which makes me interested in most things, with a particularly keen interest in cogsci and psychology (I grew up around medical science). I studied painting and drawing at uni and I used to play in bands and work in the music industry. Maybe I'll switch to using my real name here eventually. Last Notes npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I'm not sure and maybe there won't be any? My worry is less that Republicans will be able to turn it around (they're planning to steal the election not win it anyway) and more that the normie Liberals/Democrats will do more harm in the name of "saving children from weirdos" (KOSA is the obvious example of how this works). npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yes, I share those discomforts and worries but I can't say I'm not enjoying watching some of the narcissists who want everyone to think they're special using "unweird" because to be "normal" would mean they're just average and not exceptional. Anyway, it's not like any of us can control any of this. We can just hope it doesn't blow back onto us weirdos that aren't fascists. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Part of the problem is thinking there should be one homogenous culture on the fediverse or you can have one set of rules that works for everyone. That's not how cultures work, unless they're White supremacy or Hinduvata or some other form of supremacy and all about dominating, colonizing and/or destroying other cultures. I suspect the fediverse would benefit from being thought of more as a multicultural and diverse space* and we could all think more about how our cultural norms are quite subjective and influence how we communicate and experience other people's communication. * especially since translation software can help us communicate across languages to some degree. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I think this focus on thinking some new bit of technology will solve social problems is in and of itself part of the actual problem (yes, design can influence behaviour and experience but it's still people using the technology and this is a social problem not a technological one). Wanting other people or a magical solution to doing some hard social (emotional and psychological) labour IS in some ways also a driver of the problem or at least a maintainer of it. The social problems are multiple. The two big ones right now seem to be that there are troll farms that specifically target high profile professional Black women who speak publicly about racism (Black men too) for a deluge on non-stop racism to try to hound them out of spaces and limit who gets to hear them (see also female doctors online and rape threats, etc). Now, on the big centralized servers some of this gets caught by automation....that's then backed up by humans in poorer nations being paid poorly to do moderation and look at all the terrible things that have been reported, it's still offloading the emotional labour to already oppressed people. The second is that apparently a lot of White people on Mastodon have no Black friends they've talked to about racism and how exhausting it all is (a bit like how many men claim not to be aware of rape or to know any rapists even though most women know their rapist and have whisper networks to warn other women). A lot of the culture here is well meaning but basically blinded by privilege upper/middle class White people who believe it's only the other guy who is racist (we've all internalized racist ideas, even Black people living in nations with continuing legacies of White supremacy do this and often have to liberate themselves from colourism or internalized negative stereotypes, etc). Now, this doesn't mean there aren't technical issues or features that make things worse here but we need to learn how to talk about and manage the social problems as well and that's good practice for doing it offline too if you aren't doing that already (we should all be doing that already btw). @npub1jay…80k8 npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yeah, it's a real word but it still reads as very stilted to me! I wonder if it was chosen to be weird, a bit like how Trump uses weirdness to get attention and start meaningless drama. @npub1gay…58lq npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura "Stoppons Les Crimes"? 😉 npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Also wasting money, it's cheaper to house people. Making people homeless is an impractical and cruel use of collective resources. @npub1zvl…qckq npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It's weird how we keep acting like diamonds are this super precious gem when we can make gems in the lab now that are so indistinguishable from the real thing that we need to mark them to indicate they're man made. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yes and forcing people into treatment is cruel and ineffective. The drumbeat coming out of Alberta and San Francisco to use forced treatment/confinement as a means to "clean up the streets" is atrocious, cruel and ignores the real reasons why people are homeless and how homelessness drives addiction. Housing people and providing social support so they can choose treatment when they feel safe and ready is crucial. You can't force people out of addiction, just like most people who try to white knuckle their way to quitting a specific drug rather than untangling the reasons why they use drugs just transfer their addiction to something else (sometimes less harmful, sometimes not!) and are primed for a relapse at some point. It's really not irrational to use drugs to escape reality if your reality is atrociously unkind, uncomfortable and unbearable. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura It's also important to understand the role that lack of affordable housing plays in addiction and perceptions of addicts, and the health of people who are addicted to drugs. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Wonder why food is so expensive? It's the monopolies and it's a terrible exploitative system that also makes for shitty tasting and expensive food. https://www.adamconover.net/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura The antithesis of capitalism* is care and caring. That's actually the real culture war we're engaged in, the culture of care versus the culture of selfishness/uncaring. That's why fascists are attacking public health and masking, why they're dismantling social safety nets, it's why they promote eugenics and Social Darwinism, it's why they deride empathy and see it as a weakness (yet demand it be provided to themselves), it's why they value competition over collaboration, and why they promote a toxic violent idea of masculinity and deride the feminine as conceived of as gentle, soft and nurturing (even their ideas about motherhood are often cruel). *Because capitalism is about exploitation and requires hierarchies of worth and humanness to justify this exploitation of the Othered. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I think much of the organized left everywhere has realized nobody is coming to save us and we've been focusing on our own immediate survival issues, like trying to prevent anti-trans laws from harming children. Also, neoliberal parties will openly attack us if we try to organize in their tent (see how important and organized collective action groups like BLM, Sunrise org, etc get dismissed). So voting is harm reduction but, with no truly left candidates, not as important in leftists minds as it is in the minds of people who vote but don't engage in activism. This does not mean we don't recognize harm reduction, it just means we don't think Starmer or Biden do much more than buy us a bit of time but they also pave the way for popular disappointment at neoliberal policies and then even more fascism in reaction to that. It's a depressing political dynamic and cycle but I am heartened by Corbyn and Abbott winning their seats in the UK election and very glad they didn't allow themselves to be silence by Starmer, despite his heroic efforts to destroy the social justice parts of Labour. @npub1p7f…rtfv @npub1764…nuj0 npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yes, I read a lot of this as personal embarrassment too, particularly from the people who made being a Biden fan their whole identity and previously shouted down any critiques. But, also, a lot of this is being driven by pundits who aren't actually in touch with normal people (Twitter people are not the norm!). I found this insight into how some never Trump conservative rural voters reacted interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDPI_xqcyrk @npub165c…tdlq npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yes, the time for that has passed. It's kind of insane watching people trying to ditch Biden at this point. I hope the Democrats get it together and use it as an opportunity to talk and educate about democracy as a collective effort, about the President not being a king or celebrity and how important the people working at all levels of government are and, this is hoping too much I know, but about how rural and urban areas actually depend on each other and are interdependent. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura « Même quand on construit du logement locatif privé, ceux-ci sont souvent très chers, ce qui encourage les autres propriétaires à monter le prix de leurs logements. » Catherine Héon Cliche https://pivot.quebec/2024/06/18/dereglementer-pour-construire-plus-payant-pour-les-investisseurs-mais-inefficace-pour-regler-la-crise-du-logement/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I am on step one, roasting the eggplant slices for eggplant parmigiana. If I manage to sustain any ambition, I'll also make seeded crackers and maybe some banana bread. It seems unlikely that I will manage all three (especially with a skype with my mom in the middle of it all). npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Trying to work up the energy to get all the cooking things done before the heatwave starts to descend on us tomorrow... So far I am not succeeding, guess I am just going to have to push and shove myself into doing it. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Recognizing and naming the complicated feelings is the way to make sense of them. And, you know, just letting the feelings do their work of coming to terms with these changes. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I live in Montreal and still wear a mask on the metro and in stores, nobody has ever bugged me about it or even given me side eye that I've noticed. Not sure where you're going in Canada, you probably would be harassed in Alberta though. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura New Zealand currently also has an extremely right wing government fyi. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Yeah, I don't think any actual illustrator would send in work with a hand that badly illustrated (it literally makes my brain hurt with how the poorly done perspective on the hand flips the perspectives). All of it is just so ugly and badly realized, the more you look the worse it gets. Real people need to be much more skilled than this to get paid for illustration work. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Just want to point out that the illustration for this article is really atrocious, likely because it was generated by AI. I hate this ugly timeline. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura I mean, if they could fly away they would have already done that! npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura "Every day, from sunrise to sunset, trucks filled with dark brown soil rumble onto the Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) territory and unload their cargo by the Lake of Two Mountains. After decades of inaction from all levels of government, local whistleblowers have gone vigilante: installing trail cams next to dump sites, flying drones overhead, surreptitiously gathering soil samples and — in one case — firing a gun into the air to scare off a trucker. But still no answers." https://therover.ca/dump-site-openly-flaunts-provincial-law/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura A fantastic piece prompted by man vs bear... "Patriarchy has everything to do with men, but at the same time, nothing at all. In a male-centered society where maleness is associated with power, what’s really being centered is power itself. What’s suppressed is mutual relationality. Patriarchy is intertwined with colonialism, racism, and other oppressive social structures based on hierarchy. It is a fundamental fracturing of our human wholeness." https://bikepacking.com/plog/man-or-bear-debate/ npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Trauma leads us to feel constantly unsafe. Feeling unsafe and actually being unsafe or in danger are not the same thing. npub1c2wecxfe2yzs248m45nrd6w4w0rztha8lf42nax37w729kjpwqlsuxugye Fifi Lamoura Just so fucking depressing to wake up to more genocide and to know that no amount of going to protests and letter writing is going to get our governments to do the right thing and not be complicit in genocide.
