I may have found the solution. There's a chipset update in Lenovo System Update. Since applying that update, the problem with the keyboard not working seems to have gone away.
I'll keep testing.

This week, two customers contacted me about the keyboards on their ThinkPad T580 laptops not working. Makes me think it is a software issue. One is Windows 11 Pro, for sure, as I have it now and am testing. I think the other T580 has Windows 10 Pro.
There was a BIOS update available, but problem still happens after that.
External USB keyboard works fine even when built in keyboard does not work.
Anyone else seeing these issues with ThinkPad T580 or T480 laptops?

Does anyone know a blog post or other documentation for how to turn off the character set that allows the vulnerability in Ubuntu and Debian?

If you are coming from Windows, I do highly recommend the Cinnamon desktop.
With Linux, you get more choices... which can bring confusion because you aren't used to that with Windows.
The Cinnamon desktop environment is one of perhaps six major desktop environment options, with many more less used options available, too.
Cinnamon is the desktop environment developed by Linux Mint, so is default with that, but you can install and use it easily on many Linux "distos" (distributions of software that are bundled together).
Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good place to get started.

Just picked up a Dell Optiplex 780 from an 85 year old gentleman.
It still has Windows 7 on it, but something is broken. I replaced the CMOS battery with a new one onsite, as I was prepared and had one in my car. Still gives a message about the battery not having the correct voltage, so may be a problem with the motherboard.
Windows 7 attempts repairs, but then just loops and goes to the same screen again.
The owner wants to stay with Windows 7, despite me explaining politely several times in different ways that it is not likely to work well with using the computer primarily for online activities, which is pretty most of what he uses it for.
Has a 250GB WD Blue HDD, which tests as healthy. Only 4GB memory, but has a Core 2 Quad processor which was top of the line for the time this computer was released.

We almost have this with the Cinnamon desktop, as the start menu, window controls and shortcut keys are pretty much the same as what regular people loved and were familiar with on Windows XP and Windows 7.
I really do think it is a mindset issue and that no matter how hard you try, people go with what everyone else is using. If that's Windows, then that is what they use.
It is an unthinking mentality.
I do believe that independent video creators have done immense service in challenging this mentality as now it is somewhat likely that people have seen at least some tech videos of people using or recommending alternatives to Microsoft Windows, most prominently Linux.
So the tide is changing... just frustrating slow for me as I have been using Linux for 20 years now.

In this case, it was the power adapter.
I was using an HP 18.5 volt power adapter. Swapped it out for a 90W 19.5 volt HP power adapter and now the CPU speed is back to where it should be.

I don't actively use any 32 bit systems, but since I am interested in #retro things, I do have quite a few of them around and plan to do projects with them in the future.
That said, I am more interested in running #netbsd on them than #linux, though having 32 bit installers for Linux is still a good thing to have and I'm glad that #voidlinux and a few others still have 32 bit Linux installers.

For today, one of the projects is upgrading a MacBook Pro A1278. It's one of the early models with a Core 2 Duo P7550 2.26Ghz processor.
Right now it only has a 160GB hard disk drive and 2GB of memory. I'll attempt to upgrade it with a 128GB Samsung SSD and 8GB memory.
I'll be installing #Linux on it, probably #LinuxMint #Debian Edition.
It does have the nVidia GeForce 9400M graphics, which will probably be handled just fine by the installer since it is so old, we'll see.
Now, I usually do not work on Apple products, but this is a classic and it is for a friend. The MacBook A1278 is my favorite MacBook model. It was a long running series, so there are quite a few variants and not all their parts are compatible with each other.
Since it is long out of support by Apple, this is probably already considered "retro".
While having a repair shop open, we made quite a bit of money with the "caddy fix" as these A1278 models had frequent failures of the SATA connection to the SATA storage drive. The solution was to take out the optical DVD drive and replace it with a caddy that would hold a 2.5 inch SATA drive and put the storage drive there.
So far, this particular MacBook does not need that, as the hard drive is recognized.

The peaceful part is the sticking point.
Also, it depends on how you define capitalism. If you are talking about government protected businesses (collusion and fascism), then I may agree with you.
If you are talking about abolishing small businesses, then I strongly disagree with you and would not allow it to be taken away from me peacefully. Many others wouldn't either because to abolish their (small) capital is theft from individuals, families and communities.

In contrast to the retro Dell Optiplex 760 with Windows XP Pro that I delivered today, I also delivered a powerful Ryzen customer build to another customer.
All in a days work.
I really liked how it turned out and I learned a few things.
I hadn’t been paying attention to current graphics card or the companies that make them. Discovered the Sapphire brand and really like it.
Also had a good experience with a DeepCool brand case and CPU cooler.
Here’s a summary of the build:
Ryzen 7 5800X cpu
MSI B550M motherboard
Sapphire Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB graphics
64GB PC4 3600 Corsair memory
2TB WD Black nvme SSD
Corsair “Shift” power supply, with connectors on side
DeepCool CH370 Micro ATX case
DeepCool AK400 ZERO DARK cpu cooler
Windows 11 Pro (client wants Windows)
So an AMD build through and through, with Corsair and DeepCool playing a support role.

Got the Windows XP Pro all installed with the correct drives (thank you @npub18qt…nsqx for recommending sdi-tool, as that worked great on Windows XP).
Had to delete a registry entry to keep an unneeded audio service from starting, as that threw an error on login. Other than that, it worked perfectly.
Dell OEM disc sourced from archive.org, so valid license for the Dell Optiplex 760 hardware and don't have to worry about trying to activate a license for Windows XP.
Also installed a few extra open source applications that work on Windows XP: Apache OpenOffice, NotePad++, DOSbox, MyPal web browser (based on an older Firefox version).
I made a disk to disk clone of the finished work, so I can just pop the copied disk in another Optiplex 760 if another client needs a Windows XP machine or this client wants more.

It's been running for years, so older #ubuntu server. It isn't DNS (though problems often are because of DNS, as I know too well) because I can login and see with htop the offending processes take up all the CPU. Once they settle down, the website can load again.

What do you think about tools to check C code? I understand your preference for #Rust, but there's an enormous amount of code in C that will continue to be in use for some time. If there were good tools to check that code for weaknesses that then could be fixed, that would be a good thing in my opinion... but what's your take on that.
