There was an interesting take on this in the August edition of Clarkesworld. A scientist involved in sending a probe to the Kuiper belt recognizes the beginning of the collapse so she stuffs the probe with as much knowledge as she can, knowing it won't return for hundreds of years. It's worth a read for sure.

Exactly, even if most of our tech wasn't designed to fail it still requires complex support networks to function. The villain is much more likely to take over the world with a cache of muskets looted from an old museum than a super advanced fighter jet found in an underground bunker. 😁

I've been on a post apocalyptic sci-fi kick. One constant is the technological macguffin from the old world that drives the plot. At the same time I've been experiencing lag and instability on my Pixel 4 (coincident with the launch of the 9, go figure) and that got me thinking how unlikely it would be for any old tech to work. It's not that we can't build super durable devices it's just that those don't make as much profit. #scifi #ScienceFiction #books

I had a thought while I was out running. I don't know if Vietnamese moon cakes are anything like the Taiwanese version but it might be worth giving the folks at Coda Bakery a ring to see if they're making any. In New Mexico there are two main types of red chile sauce; Chile Caribe and Chile Colorado. The main difference is that Caribe uses only the flesh of the chile and Colorado uses the whole pod. Colorado has a more complex, bitter flavor but can be grainy. It really benefits from long slow cooking so I thought I'd make some in a crockpot. The flavor was great but I had to put it on the stove and boil it to get the chile to thicken. #NewMexico #food #chile #peppers #chili #cooking

After being sick for a few weeks I'm finally getting back to running. Since I'm starting to add mileage more seriously I thought I'd better double down on the protein. Bulgur, chickpeas and spinach with a tahini lemon dressing. It's not much to look at but it's satisfying and delicious! It's seasoned with wakame and allspice. I know that sounds weird but it goes together really well! #running #food #vegan

That's a good idea. I've tried running on a treadmill when it's too nasty to be outside. But, running on the treadmill makes me dizzy so i usually skip it.

Well, of course I can't find it. It was written by an orthopedic surgeon. The basic idea was that the shock of running strengthens the bone behind the cartilage but doesn't help the cartilage itself. While, repetitive flexing of the joint without loading (cycling and rowing) aligns and strengthens the cartilage fibers. I'll keep looking and see if I can find the article/video.

I was just reading that cycling (or rowing) helps to restructure the cartilage in the knees. So it's extra good for runners. I really need to get a bike. 😁

I made vegan "scallops" and they were amazing! King oyster mushrooms marinated in a mix of mushroom flavoring, nutritional yeast and kelp powder the pan fried and served with garlic, lemon, parsley butter. Even if you're not into vegan food, I'd try this out since a pack of king oysters are almost one tenth the price of scallops and this recipe is totally delicious! #food #vegan #mushrooms #cooking

Another fantastic garage find! It's BURPS! An extremely streamlined universal roleplaying system from 1987 by Maverick Games. It uses a single six sided die and is mostly focused on tests. BURPS comes with a cardstock cover/gm screen, a sample character sheet, counters and even an introductory adventure. Pretty cool!
