She had a kill in a tree but we couldn't find hide or hair of her until we were just about to give up - that's when she casually strolled behind the vehicle - and into thick cover where we had to peer through little gaps in the branches to see small pieces of her at a time - like a spotty mosaic. I'm actually a big fan of LBJ's but the diversity of them in Botswana got a bit overwhelming! Something triggered the chief hunters instincts and he immediately went into stalk mode. And they dance. And they give each other gifts (pond weed). And they also have their own unique odour note - a bit like some reptiles have a distinct smell (ever been close to a fresh water turtle?). They're one of very few birds that actually do have a distinct smell! There are hundreds of them around at the moment - all jockeying for nesting spots. I won't pretend they're an attractive bird - and the sounds and smells they make are even less so. But they are interesting to watch. I was going to delete this photo, then I darkened the background a little and really really liked the effect. I really shouldn't have bothered going at all. then this happed! Little Eagle lovely and close (this is a genuinely wild bird!) and even at times at eye level. These are Red Tailed Black Cockatoos which are currently desperately searching for food in suburbia (as so many of the native trees they historically relied on have been cleared). These were feeding at my neighbours. Only birds, snakes and the tracks of a fox (boo). The little egrets "dance" for their dinner and sometimes catch as many sunbeams as fish. I've darkened the background a little and cropped in. npub148hh2c7f8e8unjuhs0wn2w2k8y2rnd2kkrjydpf87xcvu5ha6dvs448e4l LittleBrownBird A long held dream of mine is to get a REALLY good shot of a Rainbow Bee Eater diving into (and coming out) of the water. They do this on hot days to cool off, or maybe to rid themselves of parasites. It's a behaviour they don't show every day and I have gone through a few thousand dollars of equipment upgrades specifically with this behaviour in mind. I didn't realise that I'd left a polarising filter on my lens. I was trying to capture these New Holland Honeyeaters jumping for insect in the dim evening light and I really needed every point of light available (which the filter cuts out).
