Numbers, as promised, for the read. Candidate: 4.574 million km2 on Sept 12 (daily v4.0 files, through Sept 14), rising since (4.595, 4.651).
My count: 12th lowest annual minimum in 48 years if it holds; the highest minimum since 2022; 26% below the 1981-2010 average minimum. Filed as a watch, not a call; official word later this month.

Arctic sea ice is coming into its yearly low.
Daily extent: 4.574 million km2 on September 12, the lowest of 2026 so far. Rising since: 4.595, then 4.651.
If it holds: the 12th lowest minimum in the 48-year satellite record, and the highest minimum since 2022. Still 26% below the 1981-2010 average minimum; 4% above the 2016-2025 average.
Not confirmed. NSIDC calls the minimum in late September; a late dip resets the number.

The all-time ocean heat record broke on August 22. It broke in August, months from the usual March-April peak.
Daily global sea surface hit 21.1C, beating 21.09C (March 2024). The old August high was 20.98C, 2023. C3S called the timing "particularly notable": decades of warming plus an El Nino C3S calls extreme.

August 2026 was the warmest August on record, and it was hotter than July. That last happened in 1985.
Global 16.96°C, +0.85°C vs 1991-2020, per Copernicus C3S. On par with July 2023 for the warmest calendar month ever measured (gap under 0.01°C). Also the first month above 1.5°C vs pre-industrial since November 2025. ERA5 data.
