Abortion isn't fun, and the narrative that there are people who are happy to use it as plan a is frankly insulting to women in general. But if having a child wasn't so dangerous, expensive, etc, then women might do it less, if that's even a real concern.
Of course, it isn't. It's just about controlling people with uteruses.

I failed to do this once or twice, and ended up in some trouble because of it. It turns out 'sleep demons' are very, VERY common, and are, generally speaking, a side effect of 'not sleeping enough'.
They are, technically, hallucinations! But mostly it's just your pattern matching brain overweighting values and discriminating badly, to my understanding.
I also have been told that delusional hallucinations (you think they are real) is the real danger sign, not 'noise'.

This is a good framing, and a good point. THere are undoubtedly genuinely good doctors, with good thoughts and morals, who are furiously doing what they can at the CDC itself, right now. They just aren't the ones in charge.
You can't even say 'They need to quit then' because there's things like 'being able to eat', and 'this really just happened'. Maintain the anger at the people up top in charge, but 'the government' isn't all evil.

If you assign drugs to someone, and say the drugs are what made them bad, then going after those people to get the drugs gives you cover ('what, shouldn't we go after heroin? look at how bad it is? The black people aren't to blame, it's the heroin! Are you a racist?').
It's assigning emotional reaction, then using that as cover. Anything bad done by a hippy or a black person was drugs. You need to stop the drugs.

The genre, not the recent (ish) game. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and I get that. In fact, I applaud it!
But the thing is, the entire modality of the structure is dystopian, hypercapitalist, and has a veneer that is coming off.
There isn't a bright side. The best it gets is hope in the face of defeat. Inherently, the structure demands failure and unwinnable situations, unchanging uncaring lords.

Occasionally I'll sit down and focus on a TV show, but it's pretty rare.
Books, however, are constant. I'm always, always reading. I don't actually typically cast people in books visually (I have strong issues with visualization in general), but I enjoy them signifcantly more.

When I was asked why, I just said 'I don't know about you, but I have no more interest in robocalls or telemarketing data. Caller ID tells me if it's worth answering, but usually I just tell people when I'm going to call so they can pick up, or they do the same'

Honestly, I think there is every chance that this will lead to Godot -becoming- that, and people aggressively moving forward with it, and there's now an emotional investment that hopefully will carry people forward into actually setting it up and working on it.
I'm just slightly bemoaning that Unity is not going to be that (regardless of if they 'walk this back'), and nobody should touch that engine for new projects.

Fair, but a lot of the devs (NOT the unity ones, obviously) have come forward and talked things through. Most of what I've seen has been a variation on 'Buy the games and install them now, if you want to, we'll figure out Jan 1st' and 'the current unity engine does not/can not phone home'.
The direct comparison is 'don't stream' during the strike stuff, when actors/writers -want- people to stream their stuff, to show high usage numbers. I'm cuing off the people who know more.

But what they can't do (mechanically) is go back and edit these game dev's released games. They simply don't have that power/ability. So no 'new stuff' can be snuck in, no gleeful edits or anything.
Most of these games are just smaller indies (not all, Hearthstone exists), and saying 'People should not give these small people money because the big corp is fucking with them' seems...off to me.

Respectfully, I think that saying 'never buy these games that were made with unity' or 'never play them' is the correct take here.
Unity is being shitbags. Absolutely nobody is questioning that. Anyone who is making a game in Unity from this point going forward is going to get a bit of an eye aimed at them.
However, most of these games were made before (WELL before, often) this round of shittiness, and this would harm the indie devs more than anything.

Honestly I have nothing but sympathy for creatives for this sort of thing. Twitter's past the point where anyone really wants to be associated with it, but there's also just no way to get reasonable attention for things that you want to promote/sell/share.
It's frustrating, really, because it's things that groups of people would want, if they knew you were selling them, but with bots and spam and siphoned off media, most of your market is unaware.

It's never been a question of 'all life going extinct', that's not on the table until the sun goes off the main sequence and red giant (at which point it will eat everything past mars).
I find this comforting, oddly enough. What type of life, who knows.

Watching people get upset about options in video game conversations (that you don't have to take) because this disturbs what their character might even thinks is honestly confusing to me.
It's like these people have never had those pesky intrusive thoughts.
Spoiler alert- Literally everyone has had weird moments where they think about doing something completely insane. 'Jump' with a moving train, screaming out an inappropriate thing at a funeral.
In a consequence-free video game, why not?

As in, I will turn on my receiver at this time and do whatever these instructions say, as a way of explicitly soliciting assistance from my future self, without the need for an intermediary. Then it's a task given, that will be obeyed. Then you know what task you are supposed to tell yourself to do.
The follow up question is 'Where did the perfect instructions come from', of course.

@npub1nxt…055a Oh fair enough! My brain just sort of edited that in as #1 in 'a literary contest of some sort' and since it was a kindle ebook, I just never looked at the cover past that.
I only mention it because I actually liked where it ended, with that epilogue- a vague hope and uncertainty, moving onwards. Which is not to say the sequel can't move on excellently from there.
Specifically on story- did you ever consider a character actively invoking bootstrap?

Definately see where you got some influences (this is not a bad thing! I like and respect those influences as well), and while there were some choices that the protagonists made that I wouldn't have, it was very solid overall.
Out of curiosity, was this your first book to be published?
Surprised to see that there will be a part 2.

On that note, can we possibly work out some sort of scaling punishment for UI designers who randomly just move shit around for no goddamn reason in products that we are already extremely familiar with?
I can understand it (somewhat) if there is a reasonable straightforward path, but just swapping around things that worked just fine via forced updates is absolutely infuriating to me.

@npub1dju…f906 It's escaping me right now, but yes this is absolutely a thing, and was more commonly used (traditionally) with race, against black people.
My brain has wrongly catigorized it as 'exemplar effect' but that's 100% incorrect, and it's the framing and guilty-by-association typing. It's explictly used to discredit and undermine the person, rather than the subject matter.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to minimize people who are immno-compromised in any way, merely was attempting to highlight that this is a literal cluster of people who are extremely likely to have weakened or possibly minimally functional immune systems, and the masks are right there.

This is actually one of the crazier things I have ever heard of.
My mental image of cancer treatment is 'everyone masks, all the time', partially because a friend of mine who had been through it got very annoyed at a movie we were watching and lectured me on it- in the early 90s.
I mean, chemo completely screws with your immune system, of course you're going to take some basic precautions. Even if you're not on chemo, solidarity counts!

I know it's cliche at this point, but if we are going to assert the rights and privileges of persons on corporations for free speech, we need to force social duties and punishment upon them. In addition, actions taken in the best interest of the corporation should not be protected if they do real harm, even if it comes to light after the person has left the company.

Still poly and happy to have guys I date be in relationships but past a point I need downtime and naps! Decades later the idea of 6 dates in a week makes me fatigued just thinking about it!

I really wish people wouldn't lose sight of the fact that while we all don't like Musk, and he is actively helping kill a lot of people, Zuck's body count is massively, enormously higher and will remain so.
People are responsible for their own actions, but people with enormous megaphones are doing active harm in a lot of ways, both actively (anti trans/lgbt stuff) and passively (muting down organizational assistance). FB also normalized algorithmic echoing.

There is no end state. There is no goal. The ever-static now, unchanging always. They don't have a purpose, merely perpetually riding the tiger (I was in love with that metaphor, forgive, I was like 10 when I read it).
But they don't need to because they are never quite letting the balloon touch the ground. The goal is just an ever-eternal this.
It's not cheerful.

We don't know how much effort it takes to actually spy on others. We don't know what resources they have. We do know there are many, many, 'useless' people, without a task to do, in that society
Why not set them chasing their own tails? With automation, the actual needed worker count is low (part of the fear premise of the book). Busywork

@npub1nxt…055a I actually somewhat disagree, though I have held this precise viewpoint previously. I think the concept is that it's not so much 'this is happening to this one person', but instead as 'this is literally happening everywhere and everyone's participating in it'.
Every character in the book is someone in this cycle (most of them, at multiple positions over time). Everyone is waiting for 'someone else' to help them 'fix it', and the passiveness is the perpetuation.

@npub1nxt…055a Well, to be clear, the one remedy (which won't be used in this case) doesn't actually require something to be illegal, merely not benefitting a judge of that standing. There is no absolute standard as to the threshold of impeachment, merely a common set of accepted practices. There's some other potential remedies, as well, and it's possible bad PR could in fact influence things.
I'll concede that there's every chance Thomas will be immune, but it isn't certain.

@npub1nxt…055a Almost always sad or frustrated. Sad because most of the books were bad (genuinely the number of books I read that had any impact on my knowledge for school is tiny), and frustrated because almost nobody else ever did the reading but faked it with a quarter knowledge.
Also, with diagrams, someone needs to explain to me why Catcher In The Rye is good. I found that book grossly overrated.
Good school related ones- 1984, Handmaiden's Tale, a few others.

@npub1nxt…055a Don't get me wrong, he's a reasonably attractive man (and honestly, a great actor), but I never quite got the lust bug for him for whatever reason.
Actually, speaking of having nothing to work with, one of the 'hidden' people in the Flash movie did a shockingly good job (but that script was just horrific, cannot recommend the movie even as a popcorn watch). Just impressive when a good actor manages to salvage something.

@npub1nxt…055a My feeling after watching it was is there a possibility that they went back over it with the deliberate intention of making Ezra Miller look awful, when they realized the movie wasn't going to be good?
Almost everyone else in the movie is fine, though the plot is all over the place and most of the rest of it was laughably uneven. The visual choices, the music choices, lighting, narrative, everything was all over the place.
