And how has this Home Office rule come to exist? Is it even an Act of Parliament or has the ministry just made it up? On what authority? The UK constitution and legal system is such an unholy mess 🫣

Other European countries developed a professional civil service earlier than the UK. They also realized that the public administration is often a threat to the rights of the individual. And so they created standardized procedures and independent institutions (e.g. administrative courts) to enable effective appeals.
But they also created strict hierarchies of laws so that any official, even a lowly one, will have a sense of when a formality is in danger of violating a fundamental right, so that they shy away from doing that.
Here the child's human right to a family life and its civil right as a citizen to be in the country are obviously being endangered or violated.
In Austria, a statute that created that possibility probably wouldn't even get to parliament because it would be flagged up as unconstitutional. If it was passed, the constitutional court would be onto it, and they're quick with crap like this, they would strike it down within a couple of months. >

What amazes me is the UK's lack of an effective system for complaints and appeals that is independent of the ministries being complained or appealed against. Something like this should immediately be out of the hands of the Home Office.
What is also gobsmackingly bad in this case is that apparently nobody is even disputing for a moment whether the child actually has UK citizenship. The UK is constantly making fun of continental countries' bureaucracy, but you should show me another European country where the substance of a case involving an infant citizen would be sacrificed on the altar of formalities like this.

I don't really know aboout the systems in the uk but they seem to be patchy. I'm impressed by the administrative courts here in Austria, which are a complete parallel court system for all complaints arising from administrative procedures. Officials always have to work with an eye to having their decisions reviewed by a judge.

the UK would be well served by a set of independent administrative courts. There should be clear legal standards for how officialdom treats people and appeals should be documented publicly, so that you build up a collection of generally applicable jurisprudence. The Home Office shouldn't be within a million miles of the instance that handles its appeals.

The UK has it a bit too easy with the mild winters. Here we're lucky to have proper frost. It means all the roads have decent foundations – the layers of gravel must drain water away from under the asphalt, or the whole thing will explode when it freezes – and patches and cracks are sealed obsessively.

It's not the company's fault if they are hired to fill a hole and it just pops out again. That's what inevitably happens when you just slap some material into the hole.
Asphalt/tarmac only works if it's an intact layer over a wider area and is resting on a good foundation. The smallest decent fix for a pothole is stripping off the asphalt for at least about 5-6 m round about, creating a firm, homogeneous, well drained base, surfacing over it again and sealing the edges well.

"Fixing potholes" is a terrible approach to road maintenance, and I think probably a waste of money too. The roads should be built properly in the first place and then resurfaced on a regular, rolling timetable. If you're patching them up, you're losing (ie just going deeper and deeper into technical debt).

loads fine for me, firefox on mac os.
what happens for me is the first page has a tab SARA and to the right there are menu items sara | stuff | blog | find.
if I click on "sara" while on the tab SARA, nothing happens, if I click on "stuff" while on STUFF nothing happens, if I click on "blog" while on BLOG nothing happens. when the tab FIND is active, the "find" is covered up.
which isn't necessarily a malfunction, it's just unusual for a menu item to be still there with an unmodified appearance while I'm on that page.
maybe that's what somebody is describing as "sort of useless"
(if I right-click on those menu items and choose open in new page, the links work)

Scrolling began for me surely with my phd thesis, which was about 150 pages long and written on a Mac Plus. IIRC the scroll bar had little sections at the top and bottom where if you clicked on them and held the mouse button down it would start scrolling faster. Or am I imagining that? All I want to say really is that long-distance scrolling was a thing in word processing, excel etc before needing it in web browsers.

I grew up as a commuter and by god once I experienced living within a few minutes’ walk or cycle of work I wasn't going back! Have taken it to the extreme by working from home … but still in a city centre location.
