Last Notes npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron @nprofile…kpq7 there is no browser based synth engine in Sonic Pi. It’s all native. Also check out the Ruby REPL example for how to use Sonic Pi in a headless manner. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron It’s been over 2 weeks since Sonic Pi v5 was released and still no major issues found. I’m still over the moon that the release has gone so smoothly. https://github.com/sonic-pi-net/sonic-pi/releases/tag/v5.0.0 npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Why is it that is seems to be more anti-capitalist to be a programmer that works in the finance industry or for large corporations in the daytime and hack on open source in your spare time… …rather than trying to find a sustainable and independent way of working full time on open source software using things like Patreon and paid keynotes? I just find it ludicrous that I’m so often labelled pro-corporate in OSS circles just because I’m trying to make a meagre living. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Sonic Pi v5 is released. Sonic Pi is now more friendly, more accessible, more powerful and more fun. There's something to excite everyone - from the friendlier error messages, to the pro-audio config, to the new dynamic visuals for performance. Enjoy! https://www.patreon.com/samaaron/posts/sonic-pi-v5-166001392?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron I thought being more active on Patreon and publishing more things would help me turn things around financially - but it seems to have done the opposite and I've lost way more Patreon supporters this month than in any other month for a long time. At least I'm going on holiday soon, so that's an upside! npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron It took 7 years of self-funded work, but Sonic Pi is finally at a place I'm happy with. It's even easier than beginners and even more powerful for pro users - and just way more polished in every way. It's also a (friendly) technical trojan horse for SuperSonic. https://www.patreon.com/samaaron/posts/sonic-pi-v5-1-164093369 npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron I'm Sam Aaron & I've worked on free music coding software for ~20 years. I've had meaningful impacts in both education and research. However, I'm independent & self-funding is harder than ever. Please enable me to continue by supporting on Patreon. https://patreon.com/samaaron npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Just completed my first live coded performance using v5 of Sonic Pi powered by SuperSonic. Definitely a MASSIVE eat your own dogfood moment. I live coded up to the opening keynote for MongoDB.local London and it went super smoothly. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Hand coded in Sonic Tau by my son. https://sonic-pi.net/tau/#s=G5MCoCwKbPcUBaKUS24g5gpjI5PXn48x__1tv1fviGYHs5C1BDKeGJUaaZlkX6C2FlMtaeuByKtgWPgA6Rocubk5R1M3dVN_gTyYjhnPCRRYadQ9cYMDDsQSSIPSU6Snw049FXSM_Ki_kHEjwYGdhAnOBO0kBbqGJCTwkoQJj69j1WxgWZ7wk3JeHW7JiEnYgPz76s2TLfUAWl_ZbrvMI1nPix_HvRrgg6Nu8ZcC13OgG8-ukgPjgYsfJXIjuV4xIRvQDQssedIhbR0qi_MSs859X3xCIpNzHz-ZwjILwwc https://files.mastodon.social/media_attachments/files/116/328/667/431/117/334/original/32d89bb768711345.mp4 npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Introducing Sonic Tau https://www.patreon.com/posts/introducing-tau-153717160?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron On Saturday I'll be delivering a talk at TEDxManchester where I hope to live code music on the phones of all the audience like an orchestra using my new tech. I'm both terrified (so much can go wrong) and excited (if it works it will be amazing!). Fingers crossed... npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron I'm speaking at TEDx Manchester this year! I'm really looking forward to sharing my thoughts on coding, education, art and AI with the lovely people of Manchester. Maybe see you there? https://www.tedxmanchester.com/speakers-2026/ npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Since announcing SuperSonic a few months ago I've made more than 50 releases and almost 700 commits. SuperSonic is no longer just an experimental prototype. It's now a robust well-engineered, comprehensively tested web synthesiser. I'm going to build such cool stuff with it and I hope you do too! https://sonic-pi.net/supersonic/demo.html npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron I have a working version of a very usable subset of Sonic Pi. All running in an AudioWorklet in the browser. This means *no* jitter or latency between the language & audio synth. I can send messages from the language to the audio synth with 0 SAT (Schedule Ahead Time) - and it gets delivered on time. (Note that Sonic Pi uses a 500ms SAT.) Timing schedulers are *always* accurate to 3ms. It all works like clockwork because the whole deterministic design is effectively modelled on clockwork. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron @nprofile…q6wc Indeed - and I'm pretty sure 3ms is fast enough. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron @nprofile…q6wc yes, but how slow are you prepared to accept? npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron What if your programming language didn't try and be as fast as possible but instead tried never to be slow. What would that look like? npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Vibe Coding really should be called Vegas Coding. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron SuperSonic is a fork of SuperCollider's audio engine scsynth - modified to run in a Web Audioworklet. It's not a hard fork, it's a downstream compatible fork. This means that I aim to keep it in sync with upstream where possible (and it makes sense). A good example of this is that yesterday the SuperCollider team changed the ugen API to v4 - switching from C++ to C. https://github.com/supercollider/supercollider/pull/7329 Today, I'm happy to share that SuperSonic is now v4 compatible 🙂 https://github.com/samaaron/supersonic/commit/dcf24214de6d81afd63a48accbaad2e7bed4fb25 npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron In the late 90s a synthesis engine was built for a live coding system called SuperCollider. This engine was so powerful, it was formally separated from its language and set free. Today, compiled to WebAssembly and running in an AudioWorklet, it survives as a soldier of sound. If you have a web page... if you need real-time synthesis... maybe you can use SuperSonic. http://sonic-pi.net/supersonic/demo.html npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron A mild warning... now my home renovation is complete, I'm no longer on the edge of financial calamity, and my brain is back functioning again... ...I'm going to continue getting louder, more productive and ship even more ground-breaking software than I ever did before. Let's go! npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron I just released version 0.10.0 of SuperSonic - my web port of the powerful SuperCollider audio synthesiser. It's feeling *really* good now, and I definitely think it's ready for people to start exploring. Currently, the only known limitations are that it's currently stereo out only (no input) and doesn't handle the browser suspending audio (you need to refresh the page to restart it). These will be tackled in the future. Have a play and let me know what you think! https://sonic-pi.net/supersonic/demo.html npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Just pushed 0.4 of SuperSonic - my port of SuperCollider's powerful audio synthesis engine for the web. https://sonic-pi.net/supersonic/demo.html Have a play with the demo. I've added many more of the synths from Sonic Pi and also some different looping samples to choose. Hopefully you'll have a lot of fun playing with it and it will leave you with a strong sense of wanting more. That more will be Tau5... npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron New Patreon Post: SuperSonic is Ready for Tau5! https://www.patreon.com/posts/supersonic-is-143646114?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron OMG OMG OMG - I just managed to play a pre-recorded sound in SuperSonic - my port of SuperColliders's audio engine scsynth to the web. Looks like there's a bug in actual scsynth which only revealed itself in WASM in a hideously nefarious way that wasn't at all obvious in the slightest and took a week to figure out... Still lots of work to do before it's at all polished and ready for people to play with (and it might all unravel still). npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron This afternoon/evening I’ll be speaking at the Copenhagen Clojure meetup. If you’re around, come and say hi! https://www.meetup.com/copenhagen-clojure-meetup/events/311049346//?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=-&utm_source=link&utm_version=v2 npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Mid-sale reminder... People don't talk so much about reading vibed code. This is a problem. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron When working with AI coding agents always assume that the LLM produces some garbage. It may only be a garbage comment. It may only be a garbage API call. It may be a garbage architectural decision. It may even look great but on inspection you find it’s actually gas lighting you. Don’t trust it. npub169xh48jcyz2n68z0wrtrgx9r659aa47tdhttjgmm44kl6zr4yrds5z7w96 samaaron Oops, I accidentally added @nprofile…u6qk Link support to Tau5. It’s been incredibly tough to live like this with a family of five. No oven, no sink, no proper preparation surfaces, no dishwasher (not that we ever had one). All our dishes had to be taken outside in a big bucket to be washed. Hopefully you can now realise how incredibly excited I am that this is the week our new kitchen installation starts. Ooooh yessss!!!
