Last Notes npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies DAB is really hit and miss here (especially in the car); FM’s coverage has never been perfect across quite large areas of the UK…but it really feels that’s what they are pushing us towards. I guess they are convinced it’s progress…but I’m not so sure 🤔 npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I still can’t believe they will close 198kHz down soon😭 I often still listen on a small pocket radio or at home on one of the bigger rigs. Plenty of fun to be had decoding the embedded psk data too https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/116/549/549/697/367/754/original/38faeeb2ba0e9050.jpeg https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/116/549/560/438/201/883/original/e6a3de7d28035dfa.jpeg https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/116/549/564/966/836/738/original/e16373767c58d07c.jpeg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I really like the Staubli connectors - a huge variety of insulated and uninsulated options https://www.staubli.com/gb/en/electrical-connectors/products/t-m-products/products-for-test-accessories.html npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies it’s lovely to be able to share some of my discoveries. Be careful…it can be super addictive😊 npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies In my search for this years Christmas presents, I think I’ll be getting my wife a pencil from https://eyejayinstruments.com/ - she’ll not have heard of Lindsay’s designs I suspect…but I know she’ll love the titanium or brass versions npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies Looking at what’s in rotation on my wife’s desk - two pencils from https://nicholashemingway.com - thin, elegant & light as well. She also has a 5.6mm clutch from Nicholas. A brass Kwaeco 5.6mm clutch & a no-name carbon fibre pencil. I notice she also has a Ferrule pencil holder from Makers Cabinet…the half-way house between mechanical pencils and a traditional pencil https://www.makerscabinet.com/products/ferrule. I love the weight and engineering of the Ferrule. She does like brass… https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/321/225/023/252/351/original/809175481139ac3f.jpg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies My son has his own view on mechanical pencils…and he is in love with his two Wingback Brass and Steel pencils. He absolutely loves the heavier feel, the heavy knurling and the throw-it-in-a bag bomb proof construction. He just started to study Geology at University and these were two of his must pack items and have been on a few field trips in their life so far! https://wingback.co.uk/products/mechanical-pencil-brass npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies 😂! There are worse addictions, right? I tend to like 0.7mm for general work, but the 5.6mm Brass Kwaeco Sketch Up pencil is wonderful - it’s got real heft & is wonderful to make quick notes with as I’m on a conference call. The Staedtler Mars Technicolor 789C falls in the same category for me too. It just feels right in the hand. Their Graphite 925-35 is one of my preferred options for layout work. A Rotring 600 has been known to sit on my desk as well https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/320/775/624/877/742/original/6cb62c42028fd46e.jpg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I’m way behind the peanut gallery answering…but I really like Leuchtturm1917 notebooks, and my wife really likes her awesome Japanese Hobonichi Techo notebooks. I supplement my physical notes with markdown notes captured in Obsidian (on Mac, PC and iPhone). I pray you don’t ask for our thoughts on mechanical pencils or fountain pens etc…Mastodon doesn’t allow me enough words to describe our choices… https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/318/627/821/116/341/original/c64c7d772785bc0c.jpg https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/318/628/152/029/833/original/101fa018c9e8f000.jpg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies Had lots of fun putting together a small toolkit for my son to take to Uni. It should be able to handle plenty of the small breakages and challenges he might experience away from home. There’s also a small portable multimeter and USB-C soldering iron…but I haven’t had time to add them to the kit yet. Now I’ll have to build a kit for myself! https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/161/858/062/935/795/original/e7f7a97f2977d143.jpg https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/113/161/858/612/088/230/original/3fcaee0466b788d4.jpeg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I’m really pleased with my MS-01 https://store.minisforum.uk/products/minisforum-ms-01 May even be overkill for your needs. Run the appliance software in a Proxmox VM maybe…and use other VMs for new needs as they arise npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies Olson have some really nice power strips in a huge number of configurations. Alternatively wall or bench conduit provides a great opportunity for plenty of sockets around a room https://www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/categories/bench-trunking-pvc-bench-trunking https://olsondirect.co.uk/product/18-way-13a-sockets-angled-left-neon-13a-plug-pdu/ npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies they are extra here https://helinox.co.uk/products/ground-sheet npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I think until you get to £100 they are all supposed to suck! We’re lucky, as our builders always ran cables straight up from sockets etc…so we know the path of most wires inside the walls npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies https://mastodon.radio/system/media_attachments/files/112/439/408/867/350/227/original/8c55ec45c8017dce.jpeg npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies I better make a pilgrimage to resolve that glaring omission! npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies Ohhhh! Is it wrong that I am unreasonably excited that I can buy one? npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies that’s an awesome, and I guess much prized T-Shirt npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies http://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2024/4/23/david-baileys-just-beer-things-8-nbsphype-is-dead-cask-is-forever npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies it’s absolutely the best with a fry up…normally fried bread, local bacon, cockles fried with breadcrumbs, a couple of sausages and an egg. Food of the gods npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies have ice cream at Joes, cockles, laver bread and Welsh cakes from Swansea market (maybe not together) and some time out on the Gower (maybe a walk along Rhossili or Llangennith to blow the cobwebs out). And yes, it’s proper Wales imho 🫣 npub176hjqkczcsfxgdk2v6qvpwu4ml7dg837a8sn7q6q843a6qrkrtzsflve7c Robin Davies Mouser and Digikey have the same warning for a number of components…and frequently seal a moisture indicator in the bag too. I’ve not worried about it (as I’m hand soldering components) - but I understand it’s more critical for reflow work https://ferroxcube.home.pl/envir/info/J-STD-020C%20Proposed%20Std%20Jan04.pdf k
