I likely comes as no surprise that at least some EV charging infrastructure has been rolled out with laughably bad security.
The fact that someone could probably cause significant damage to the local power grid or plant malware for future vehicles connected with very little real effort is wild, especially since many chargers are in only minimally protected public spaces.
It’s like being able to stick in a specially formatted debit card and suddenly have full access to a bank’s entire internal system.

Question from a few people I know who are finally ditching their Ring cameras:
Is there any option to properly recycle them or is there a group looking to repurpose the hardware for anything?
E-wasting them feels … wasteful, but passing them on to someone else is worse. So they’re hoping for a third option.

I was just discussing with a close friend last week about my hesitation to travel internationally, given the increasing risk to being stopped at the border.
He replied “you’re a citizen, you’re fine”.
My response “And how much longer do you think that will matter?”
I’ve now got my answer.

Exactly that, if I’m already doing all the work for myself anyway, it’s almost nothing to open things up to close friends and family to use.
And for all intents and purposes, self-hosting is simply out of reach, I’ve had a lot of discussions over the last year or so with non-technical people in my life and for them, non-Big Tech options basically don’t exist because there’s no way they could manage them.
Heck, there’s a lot of self-hosted tools I struggle to maintain or setup, so what hope would others have?
That is the biggest hurdle and opportunity ahead of us collectively: we need self-hostable options yes, but they also *have* to be nearly push button to setup and maintain safely and securely. For all its flaws, we need more things with a setup process like WordPress than Mastodon.

It’s funny, but I have been thinking about operating a shared music streaming setup for a group of friends. Getting them to make the same jump I am out of paid streaming is hard, but they love the idea.
I can handle the technical lift, and we all collectively purchase the music we like and share that just like 20 years ago when we’d share CDs.

Was explaining the whole self-hosted/small web movement to someone at work today, and they replied “Oh, so you’re like one of those preppers with a bunker, but digital.”
And I will not be taking any further questions at this time.

This whole web of people and organizations is awash in money and six-figure “consulting fees”. This finding is for a single campaign several years ago.
With how much money the organization has spent on local elections in the last 4 years (a reported $8.7 million), what are the odds they’ve made a habit of this unethical conduct?
