Yep, I talked about this at NixCon EU 2023. Basically using a well defined base NixOS with Pantheon and Flathub configured so when family need "apps" they can get what they want from the desktop store front.

I wasn't sure what to expect with regards to server requirements. Some of my plans will require some hefty apps and I might consolidate some other hosting on the box.
I was most cautious about hosting Mastodon at the outset, but ended up going with [@gotosocial](https://gts.superseriousbusiness.org/@gotosocial ) which has mitaged that concern 🦥
PeerTube and Pixelfed will require more headroom. Hopefully migrating to a smaller server will be possible 🤞🔮

I'm running bcachefs on my laptops and VMs because they a single drive devices and using the builtin bcachefs compression gives me some additional storage headroom.
For multi-drive workstations and servers I'm still using either mdadm and XFS or XFS and mergerfs.

A dedicated server has been acquired and initial research on what stack I'll use to self host my own platform from ActivityPub blog comments to, photo rolls, live streams and video hosting 👍

I've been on a streaming hiatus and considering how and where I'll stream when I shortly return.
I'll continue to stream to Twitch and YouTube, mostly for discovery. But I'm going to embrace ActivityPub integration and also stream with Owncast and/or Peertube.
I have a new dedicated server provisioned and I'm going to self host the required infrastructure 🙂 Should be a fun project.

The Sony INZONE Buds just work on Linux 🐧 Plug the USB-C dongle in the PC and it shows up as an audio device, just as you'd expect.
The USB-C dongle also works with Android, Steam Deck and other consoles 🎮 I did use Windows (once) to configure the touch gestures which are saved to the buds.
The buds only support Bluetooth LE. Few mobile devices are compatible with BLE for audio, so be aware of that. I use these buds on PC only. The 12 hour battery life is genuine 👍

Audio support in macOS VMs is currently only possible by passing through a simple USB audio device from the host, which is cumbersome 😓
I have a possible solution I'm researching which is to enable VirtIO-SND in the macOS guests. It's unclear to me how complete macOS Virtio-SND support is across macOS versions, so this may only be available in the recent releases and if this idea even works at all 😁

For me, Magic DNS, Tailscale ssh, Taildrop, Tailscale serve and funnel and the exit node and subnet routing features of Tailscale are way easier to configure than the Zerotier equivalents.
Recently Tailscale added Mullvad VPN integration to for the same $5 per month you can use any Mullvad VPN PoP as a Tailscale exit node.

I been using Tailscale for work for years. I switched to Zerotier for home stuff for a bit because dual authentication for home and work with Tailscale was a bit of a faff.
I mentioned that on the podcast, before Tailscale were a sponsor, they listened and added 'tailscale switch' so you can easily change Tailnets. Following that I switched back to Tailscale for my home stuff 🙂

I found Obsidian to be a bit "much". To regimented for my simple note taking needs. Heynote is doing a fine job for all the heavy lifting for day to day to do lists and transient notes with Joplin serving it's role for research or important stuff I want to refer back to 🙂

I have a MacBook Air M2, mostly for travelling due to the epic battery endurance 🔋 With Nix, Home Manager, and nix-darwin on macOS, it feels a lot like "Linux" just with a different desktop environment.
I do dual boot it with NixOS for Apple Silicon. What the @npub15zx…t7sv team have accomplished is astonishing, and when your M1 ages out something you can use to extend its useful life 👍️
