well, how much society wants Kalshi to be fair depends a lot on how institutional they are. Seems like, in the US, the administration is quite wrapped up in it? What they think they can win on is maybe even directing us foreign policy?

yeah, i agree, it reminds me of a rule introduced into an already-designed game because they realized it was unbalanced. I would argue that it hasn't really worked, and the stock market is still largely a force for tricking people into buying into things they will lose money on. I would also, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, note that with this widespread acceptance of memecoins and Kalshi, maybe people's investing habits are not affected by the existence of insider trading?

i think i understand the point you're making, though i would take it in a very different direction. I don't see that there is an inherent difference between information that is correct vs information that is insider. Your pizza deliverer sounds like they're guessing based on very little, and so unlikely to be correct. But if they did some other work to get info way more correct, how is that different from someone learning it by being inside? The difference is only practical, i think.

I had heard of web ad auctions.
I had heard of edge computing.
I did not realize they were pushing their ad auction calculations onto your device!
Knowing this, I think ad blockers are too polite a response. Are there any browser plugins that send them something like a decompression bomb? Or maybe that interferes in the ranking so the cheapest bid is returned as the winner? My device is the one deciding, after all!

my narrative goes like: a bunch of people made bad bets, then took over a country to convert them to good bets, at everyone else's expense.
Now mainstream business has decided it's not worth fighting them.
😭Why wasn't this sequence possible with climate change action? A fringe group (initially!) convinced that the smart bet was to mitigate and transition, but instead of eventual mainstream adoption, we've gotten to mass popularity without business capitulation

I don't know what the situation is in manor park, but my neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks either, and I'm scared of what will happen if we do get them. Won't it encourage drivers to go fast, make them less tolerant of bikes and pets and kids being on the road, and in general take useable space away from everything but cars? I'd rather people think of our neighborhood as a place to drive as a last resort. But I'm interested to hear what I'm missing!

i have been noticing the "orders of magnitude" drift/misuse too...i think it's part of the ad/scam industry's push to make all precise, technical language into wishy washy whatever so that they can make any claim with impunity.

I am apparently just discovering now, despite being a fairly climate-info-consuming person for years, that the group Just Stop Oil apparently never damaged any art. Every stunt was planned so that it would be easily cleaned up. I had just assumed the framing i heard was plausible: a group was destroying artworks because they thought their cause was that important.
Amusingly, this was HT @npub1fdr…lvhs after reading his recent "how i got scammed". Me too, for years, i guess!

A quick warning for Canadians on Mastodon, that I'm sure most are already aware of:
I've seen a couple times now newish accounts blasting out to every Canadian hashtag under the sun about how Carney is bad. They are pitched to complain he isn't left enough, which is something I'm sure a lot of us are concerned with. But it looks to me like the thin edge of the ole foreign election interference wedge. Be careful!

Really neat place, here's my pitch: art from Canadians! You can pick any print you see and they will put it on a hoodie or shirt for you! Not very expensive! A rotating local art exhibit (right now it's glass sculptures)? A dry bar with mocktails?

Phanpy question: I'm using the PWA (Firefox) on android. Most of the time, when I switch to another app (usually also Firefox!) and switch back, phanpy has lost my scrolling position and puts me back at the top, loading new stuff.
