📉 As we crossed our current plan 48 GB limit a few days ago, I asked @npub1r30…8lle from masto.host to run the `tootctl status remove` command on our server.
And guess what? It cleaned more than 8 GB of data, which allowed me to temporarily downgrade our subscription by removing 1 extra resources add-on! I’ll probably have to add it again in a few weeks, but at least that’s some money saved.

Unfortunately, we can't install Tangerine UI on the server because masto.host only allows us to change the admin settings accessible via the web UI, I don't have access to the code.
But you can add the custom CSS for yourself if you use browser extension as it is explained in the documentation!

I also wrote “If it turns out that some of their practices, particularly in terms of moderation, negatively affect certain people and the Fediverse in general, we reserve the right to limit or suspend their server in the future.”
We’ve waited, we observed, and now the time has come: Meta has gone way beyond the limits.

⛔ Speaking of trust and security makes a perfect transition into why we decided to suspend and defederate from Threads.
This decision is in response to Meta’s recent announcements on the large-scale removal of content moderation rules and third-party fact-checking tools, which deeply affect the safety of LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized communities and contribute to spreading misinformation on a global scale.

💯 One of the reason I missed the previous announcement is that I needed to prepare a talk entitle “Techno-governance - Administrating mastodon.design: feedback and ideas for a sustainable Fediverse” for Ethics by Design in Nantes, France, organized by @npub1t4h…hgfw.
It took me much longer than expected (my presentation is 100 slides long), but it was very interesting to prepare, and I got great feedback from the people there!

📉 So Hugo ran it, and after 12h, our database size dropped to 32.64 GB! This significant reduction allowed me to downgrade our Masto.host plan by removing the extra resources add-on, which in the end allows us to slow down a bit the growth of our monthly costs.
So here are our current server stats:
Database: 32.83 GB / 40 GB (−10.36 GB)
Media: 135.94 GB / 400 GB (−2.06 GB)

🧹 As we were approaching the 44 GB mark, I decided to send a message to Hugo (who runs @npub18sk…l2gu) a few days ago to ask him what we could do to reduce our disk space usage.
He proposed to run the `tootctl status remove` command, which cleans up unreferenced statuses from users that nobody follows and that have never been interacted with.
As it is “a computationally heavy procedure”, this command isn’t part of the scheduled maintenance cleaning commands included with our subscription.

📊 Even if it’s still too early to assess the long-term impact of our new Content cache retention policy on the size of our database, here is our current disk space usage:
Database: 37.75 GB / 40 GB (94.38%)
Media: 137 GB / 400 GB (34.25%)
I hope we will not exceed the 40 GB mark, but it’s almost impossible to predict precisely how this will evolve over the coming months. I’ll keep you informed.
