Last Notes npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…xkhf Also, why are all the patrol animals dogs? I feel like goats would make much better mountain rescue. Is that a serious question? Goats have no paws of course. They would have to join Hoof Patrol. I see a spin-off opportunity. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…5ds9 @nprofile…s45g I live in Amsterdam, with a car, and my wife even uses it quite regularly, but I have absolutely no complaints about Amsterdam's autoluw policies. The city keeps getting better. Cars are fine if you need to get out of the city, to a place that has no easy train station. But into the city center? Or any part of the city that's less than 5km away? That's not what cars are for. They're a plague on the city. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…v2v2 Interesting perspective. So how do you make it possible for anyone to modify the software? If average users never had the know-how to do this, and programs even getting too big for even experienced programmers to easily understand and modify, what is even the point of a license that allows it? Ultimately it's not just about the legal permission to modify it, but about the physical ability to do it. The skill, knowledge and expertise, that most users lack. Often I wish some application was put together differently, but I'm not going to put in the time to learn and understand that code base. So in light of Linus' announcement that Linux is not going to be anti-AI, I now find myself wondering if AI could be the solution to it. Dangerous of course, to have users vibe-coding their own modifications. But now I'm wondering if open source projects could include the tools and context files to make this viable. AI is not popular among the whole open source community, but now I find myself wondering if it could turn out to be the missing key to enable users to take more control over their system. Not sure what to think about it, but the goal is interesting. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…3eqn I will never understand how Labour manages to continue to fuck up. 10 years of ridiculous Tory clown show, and Labour couldn't even manage a decent opposition. Determined to be Tory-light, apparently. I've felt for a long time that English voters should replace the Tories with the LibDems and Labour with the Greens. That would do the country a lot of good. But I hope Andy Burnham is finally going to be better. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…4f7h tl;dr Looks like Russia is ready for large scale jamming of GPS across Europe and Canada. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…3jwj Are they planning on pulling a Putin on Canada? Propping up separatists in as neighbouring country. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…4xpq @nprofile…wt4z Are you saying Anthropic is worse than OpenAI and the others? My impression was that they were the least bad of the bunch. But that CISO is undeniably a piece of shit. Did I just fall for their better PR? npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…40pg European governments and sensitive private infrastructure (like banks, healthcare, etc) should not be using US cloud providers at all. It's been blatantly obvious that they're legally unable to obey our laws, and under Trump, that conflict has become a lot more urgent. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…6cwc @nprofile…95jy Yeah. I wouldn't mind a remake, because the story that they tell, is really good. By far the best part of the prequels is the machinations of Palpatine in the background, manipulating both sides of a war in order to seize power. Twice. That's a great story that deserves to be told better. Can we do this as an Andor-style remake that really dives into the politics of it? npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…6cwc @nprofile…95jy I find Episode 1 the least watchable. It just hurts to watch it. 2 is perfectly watchable if you don't pay too much attention to the plot holes. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos I really don't understand why people are upset about this particular PR. Yes, the age verification law is stupid, but this is by far the best way to handle it. It's optional, and puts users in control. Other age verification schemes have involved privacy-invading measures like uploading id documents or facial scanning, both of which are completely unacceptable. Putting the user in control is good. Parents can enter a birthdate on the accounts for their children without compromising their child's identity. And that's the only thing that really matters. There are people who complain that this is unreliable, but what existing age verification is more reliable than this? The only other acceptable method is for governments to provide an online e-ID service where a user's age can be verified anonymously, and I haven't heard of any government providing that yet. Failing that, this sounds to me like the only way to do it. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos My hatred for Microsoft has reached new depths. The have made Minecraft unplayable. When Minecraft was just Mojang, it was easy to play. Then Microsoft bought Mojang, and for a while left it alone. Then they forced everyone to migrate their Mojang accounts to their own unbelievably shitty Microsoft accounts. Something there went wrong, and my oldest son's account somehow ended up in my wife's Microsoft account (because she already had one). Since then, every time you want to play Minecraft, you first have to log into your Microsoft account, and every time you want to do something, you jump through Microsoft's hoops. My youngest son has always playes on my wife's account, but since he got his own laptop, I figured he should also have his own Minecraft account. Except, I'd been so stupid to make his account a Microsoft Family account. I should have known better, because Microsoft Family is probably the most disfunctional piece of shit Microsoft has ever created. So now my son cannot play multiplayer. None of the instructions of how to enable it (all of which are needlessly arcane and sound contradictory) actually work. I spent money on Microsoft and was immediately punished for it. An hour of frustration with no results. Next time I'm going to spend that time to figure out how to install a cracked Minecraft that doesn't depend on MS anymore. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…uhwr @nprofile…jmqc I recently got the choice between a regular sim and an esim in an emergency carrier switch. I wanted the new account active as soon as possible, so being able to download an esim sounded appealing. Then I read that my carrier would send me a QR code on a piece of plastic that I could scan and then download the esim, which made me wonder what the entire point was. It felt less secure and they threw away the one advantage they had: speed. I opted for a regular sim instead. Reading this, I'm happy with my choice. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…wsw2 @nprofile…3nqk Light sabers are blocked by beskar and even disrupted by cortosis. It's possible adamantium and vibranium could count as those. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…z2ys @nprofile…kuqe To me, the freedom of choice is a big advantage for The Witcher. Sure, can't pick your own character, but you can chose what the character does, and that's the more important aspect to me. Too many CRPGs don't really allow you to make meaningful choices, but TW is pretty good at that. At least for big choices; in dialogue I still often don't see the option I want to pick. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…z2ys It is wasn't until Fallout and Baldur's Gate that CRPGs started to appeal to me. Before that, it felt like they weren't worthy of the name RPG; there wasn't any role playing, it seemed to me it was just combat. To me, the social interaction, dialogue and storytelling was essential to have me accept computer games as role-playing. Although I still often find it too limiting. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…9rgm Can consumer organizations appeal this? Antitrust is supposed to protect consumer interests. This is explicitly punishing the consumer for something they have no control over. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…csh8 @nprofile…dklr Don't go back to Chrome! Use Vivaldi or something. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos If any group has no right to due process, anyone can be assumed to be in that group and immediately lose their rights, and they get no due process to prove that they're not part of that group. That's how they can deny anyone their rights. Even people who are not part of the targeted group. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos Now I'm wondering if he's also the actual phantom menace, and not Palps. He's not the clones, though. Nor the new hope. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…khx3 @nprofile…9rgm You can follow his RRS feed. Then you just get his story straight in your feed (depending on your UI of course). But I think it would be nice to have a UI that does something clever with threads like these. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…qljg @nprofile…9rgm This is absolutely sick. Exactly those people who need it the most, get the least. This sort of practice needs to be made explicitly illegal. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…f07r Do rights that are violated, stop being rights? But when rights are being violated with impunity, then clearly better protections of those rights are necessary. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…ssqw Nothing wrong with copying from the best. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…ma6z @nprofile…9rgm Mildly related: Adam Smith said labour unions were necessary to balance the power of corporations. Also a vital part that some people love to ignore. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…xj66 @nprofile…c0y5 @nprofile…h8rr Did that come out a year before the movie!? I've read it. I can't find it on my bookshelf anymore, so no idea what happened to it (maybe I borrowed it from someone? Or loaned it to someone?), but I definitely remember Biggs and the Han+Jabba scene, and was thrilled by the extra scenes. I was also initially thrilled to see the Jabba scene in the special editions, until I realized it didn't really work and kinda ruined Jabba. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…d36d Oh no! What will we do without profits for shareholders? The world would come to an end. At least if your world is mostly about greed and exploitation. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…e72p Cool! But your site doesn't load very well. Most accounts just show an endless spinner because some json isn't loading. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…yktm @nprofile…9rgm Are we replacing bosses with apps while keeping the bosses? When employees get replaced by tech, they get fired. Let's at least also do the same with bosses. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @nprofile…hgkx Het is belangrijk om je te realiseren dat Bluesky eigenlijk niet fundamenteel anders is dan Twitter was, en dus ook net zo kan worden. Het kan gekocht worden door een gekke miljardair, maar het kan ook zonder dat enshittified worden omdat aandeelhouders meer geld willen zien. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos Sorry, no Mastodon for me. I use Friendica. Which is another reason why the fediverse is better. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub15lv…ctwx In that screenshot he's not saying not to try to fix the US, he's saying not to come to him if you want to fix the US, but go to Strong Towns instead. And he's saying it's more effective to try to fix someplace else. He's obviously given up on North America, and he has good reasons for that, but if you want to fix the US, I say go for it. It will probably be a long and frustrating fight, but if it's one you want to fight, it's a good fight. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1c6e…7cuv @npub1yxz…5qvv I'm following @npub1yxz…5qvv 's feed in Friendica, which supports RSS mixed in with my regular social media feed. I should probably follow a lot more RSS here, though. (Actually, I also follow HN through RSS now, but those were never the enshittified parts of the web.) npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1srx…frua Can they take his plane until he pays his bills? npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1cdz…h37d They do that with a lot of songs. I have checked the originals of a few I'd never heard of, and I regretted it. Some of my favourite PMJ songs are covers of pretty questionable originals. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1nqc…hc9e Friendica still supports RSS. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1wup…gjnd 40 years ago they were functionally the same, but not anymore. Since then, the Republicans have changed catastrophically. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1agu…j0sk Is it meant to be a trap or something? Test if Biden is willing to use the tyrannical power they're handing the president? Because you know Trump will. He has already been saying so. npub1cdm376p02ccmey3jy75phthkp6lmzrut7ezcxyrhl45n7nffs2ssuu2jyw Martijn Vos @npub1agu…j0sk I had no idea shakshuka was that old. It's quite popular at our home.
