Jeff, you always find a way to make me contemplate my own existence over and over again. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and being so generous with it, you've helped me grow immensely.

Ah that makes sense. 2016 blocks averages two weeks under normal circumstances, so it’s block-based rather than calendar-time based. Got it. Looked into it a bit and it sounds like cumulative proof of work, rather than simply chain length, determines the “correct” chain as well.
Reaching that difficulty adjustment is a pretty large barrier. Has been interesting, scary to think of how it would economically affect people if one side ultimately lost and that many blocks were no longer recognized by the other chain. Still want to stack sats, also curious to see how everything unfolds. I feel like I’m stuck in Bitcoin limbo.

After the two-week difficulty adjustment, say difficulty drops 95%, wouldn't that heavily incentivize a large-scale miner to mine the BIP-110 chain? For two weeks, wouldn't they be tearing through blocks at an insane rate? Wouldn't that also catch the BIP-110 chain up to the "legacy chain" because blocks would be mined so quickly due to the lower difficulty?

Given the current entropy fiasco with hardware wallets- a good technical breakdown of Fedi's security might be helpful to the community to provide them a simple path to a piece of mind.

Under perfect money, a person might remain flawed, but their ability to scale that flaw would be constrained by scarce resources, transparent costs, voluntary participation, and the constant possibility of competition.

Do you feel this battle between the legacy and new systems is a trial testing humanity for something greater?
What is truly scarce in an abundant world?
Is Bitcoin the base layer to building eternity?

Full disclosure I have no idea how it works, but to take a stab at what I think is happening is that it's using a behind the scenes multi sig that is held by the guardians, but I don't believe the guardians know the other key holder's identity so I believe it's actually pretty secure. I'm assuming Fedi itself is using the multisig behind the scenes to send funds outside the group. I'm getting the overall image of this being more of a checking account type wallet. Much more secure than a standard hot wallet, but not cold storage. Hopefully Jeff can jump in at some point and help break this down.
I think because it's so early we wrestle with feeling comfortable with coins outside of cold storage and being held on a higher layer. I imagine the majority of the population won't bat an eye at something like this because they won't know any different by the time they adopt it. But for early adopters understanding cold storage and multisig this feels terrifying right now.

It's very forward thinking- the idea is that in the future potentially blockchain transactions will be heavily tracked. A bad actor be it a criminal, government, or criminal government could piece together who people/entities are and go after them & their coin. Fedi is a shield against this. John McAfee warned about this suggesting that this was a huge flaw in Bitcoin, but Jeff is solving this on layer 3. As someone that is educating others on Bitcoin, I need full confidence in what I'm talking about and recommending. I have so many questions I'm not sure where to start, but this looks like something I want to onboard everyone I know to.

What I love about Apple- whenever they introduce new hardware or software they just use their products on stage like you would normally on any given day. By the end of their presentation you've seen every new nook, cranny and feature of what they're releasing. Fedi could really use something like this.
Jeff, I love you and your message. But until I see an easy to understand demonstration, even as someone on the bleeding edge of technology this feels out of reach.
I understand its importance and why it exists. Are you implying that I leave cold storage behind entirely? Partially? I can transact outside the federation semi-privately? Is this a savings account, checking account or wallet in regards to holdings amount/security?

Haaaah, you’re already on Graphene, that’s awesome! 🙌 I might have some questions for you, I’ll see how Day 1 goes tomorrow.
You have a T480 already?! That’s perfect, you can totally flash it with Libreboot! You’ll just need:
8-pin test clip – https://a.co/d/cgVR6gA
Jumper ribbon cables – https://a.co/d/39Sjxwy
Raspberry Pi Pico – https://a.co/d/iTpClWL
There’s a guide on the Libreboot website: https://libreboot.org/docs/install/t480.html but it can be a bit tricky to follow. I’m happy to share the notes my friend and I used when doing ours a few weeks ago if you’re interested.
As a word of caution, without a safe BIOS backup, you could brick the laptop. With one, even if something goes wrong, you can just write the backup back and recover it, so ultimately no sweat.
It might look more intimidating than it really is, I promise you, you got this.

That moment that clicked when I realized Linux was decentralized just like Bitcoin. Awesome to hear this!!!
Star Labs has some really nice machines when you want to get even further away from surveillance tech, and they accept Bitcoin. Machines running Coreboot or Libreboot have an open source BIOS and disable Intel Management Engine which is essentially a black box that has root access to most of the computer. AMD has an equivalent. Some older models of Thinkpads can be flashed to replace the stock BIOS with Libreboot like an X230 or T480 or T480S. Open source secure, air gapped signer and network connected broadcaster?
Protectli makes Coreboot based routers, I think they would also make excellent nodes if you got one for that purpose. I wish they accepted Bitcoin.
On a Google Pixel you can run GrapheneOS, a security and privacy minded open source mobile OS that DeGoogles the Google device, mine comes today!
Sorry for the info dump but I get excited when I see someone discover privacy/security/decentralized/open source tech. You may know all or some of this or if not, some neat things to check out!
As a 10.5 year employee of Apple, I still love Apple, but I love freedom more.

I'm not giving up on Apple though. 😉

I believe it can be done, but I'm not entirely sure it can be done alone. Think about how nodes reach consensus. If someone lost in fiat land is surrounded by Bitcoiners they have a strong connection with...
It's so early these are difficult circumstances to manifest.

Love your work Matthew, setting my Bitaxe to mine through DATUM on my node is a small project I just finished last weekend and was so stoked to see your video yesterday. I think an interesting area to explore for the masses and a path towards growth in their comfort zone might be based around security, trust and simplicity levels in running different types of nodes, so take like Umbrel > RaspiBlitz > Start9 > running Knots directly on a locked down hardened Debian/Ubuntu server, one using something like Coreboot/Libreboot. Protectli and Starlabs have decent secure hardware options. This is something I've been playing around with recently but information in these areas gets a bit scarce.
I envision a home LAN divided 3 ways by a firewall, standard devices, nodes, and a non-internet secure LAN. The node on the non-internet secure LAN would only communicate with the local node(s) on the adjacent LAN with nodes and internet, port 8333 could be opened here without any security impact to your normal or secure devices. Can still have an air gapped laptop for signing, and a laptop on the non-internet secure LAN for broadcasting transactions through the secured node.
Overkill? Probably, but nonetheless a fun project to push the envelope of cybersecurity. Defense in depth for Bitcoin is an area that I would love to see explored.
Blockstream's Satellite kit is something else I'd love to see explored. My path to the satellite is blocked by trees, but would still love to see it.
