Roadstr 1.2.1 is out 📹
New report category: Flock Camera (or any surveillance camera for the rest of the world).
See a surveillance camera on your route? Drop a pin. It's published as a Nostr event, not sent to any company's server, and it stays on the map for 30 days. Everyone running Roadstr sees what the community has marked, with confirmations and "not there anymore" votes like every other report.
No account with a corporation, no tracking, no ads: just people telling each other what's on the road to mantain their privacy.
Also in this release:
• The voice now says "Let's go" before the first instruction, not after
• The last turn says you WILL arrive; "you have arrived" is said once, when you actually do
Native Kotlin app, Android, MIT. Fresh APKs on GitHub and on @nprofile…zjna

Roadstr 1.2.0 is out 🗺️
• Explore: browse what's around any area by category. If a map provider fails it falls back to the next, and "offline" or "nothing found" is said plainly. Unfortunately Overpass offers a lot of support for their free API key, but it's always overcrowded. There's always the option to opt-in to their paid API key, but a per-case basis needs to be applied.
• Roadstr Journey: A new way to convince to use Roadstr instead of Google Maps 😂 Get a badge once you reach a certain threshold driving using Roadstr. Validated distance per mode of transport and 17 gold achievement coins that spin in 3D. Optional sync is encrypted to your own key (NIP-44 over NIP-78), so relays only get ciphertext.
Obviously it's opt-in, off by default
• NIP-58 badge support in the client, so you can showoff your badges to other people, let them know who's boss. Try and get the ultimate badge.
• Offline voice search: speech is recognised on your phone (Parakeet, 25 languages). No Google, no cloud, no audio leaves the device.
Be aware, it will download half a gig worth of files to run offline (I care about your privacy), credit to https://gitworkshop.dev/npub1jg2qmt3rxjksq65v3nk7dq6yaz2c4uf3qt9epdhxwms2xwd47j2s38a228/relay.ngit.dev/offline-speech-to-text
Android only as usual. Free, open source, no accounts, no tracking.

ROADSTR 1.0.0 IS FINALLY HERE! 🎉🚀
After countless hours of development, testing on the road and debugging... I'm incredibly excited to announce the first stable release of Roadstr!
For those who don't know it yet, Roadstr is a free, open-source, decentralized navigation app for Android, powered by **Nostr, Bitcoin Lightning, and OpenStreetMap**, with absolutely no Google dependencies.
Since v0.5.0, the project has evolved enormously. And the biggest change? Roadstr has been rewritten from Flutter to native Kotlin, with Jetpack Compose and MapLibre!
Here's what we've built along the way:
🗺️ A whole new navigation experience
- Beautiful OpenStreetMap-based maps with 3D tilt, rotation, light/dark themes, and customizable vehicle cursors.
- Possibility to choose from 4 different tier of power consumption to accomodate both entry level phones and flagships.
- Real-time turn-by-turn GPS navigation, automatic rerouting, multiple route alternatives, and multi-stop planning.
- Navigation that keeps running even when your screen is off.
- Driving, walking, and cycling routes, with OSRM, GraphHopper, and OpenRouteService support.
- Live speed limits, speed-adaptive zoom, and customizable speedometer HUDs.
🌍 OFFLINE MAPS & NAVIGATION
- Downloadable worldwide maps using Geofabrik and Shortbread MBTiles.
- A hierarchical map catalog covering continents, countries, regions, and over 34,000 cities!
- Verified, resumable downloads and local map rendering.
- Optional offline routing powered by an on-device Valhalla engine, using separate routing packages.
- Support for custom and self-hosted map catalogs.
🤖 AI VOICE GUIDANCE — WITHOUT THE CLOUD
- Natural-sounding, on-device voice navigation powered by Kokoro-82M and Piper.
- No cloud AI API required. Voice generation happens directly on your phone.
- Multilingual guidance, downloadable voice models, and adjustable voices.
⚡ NOSTR + BITCOIN LIGHTNING
- Decentralized road reports for accidents, traffic jams, hazards, police activity, and speed cameras.
- Community confirmations, report corrections, and activity notifications.
- Reports created without connectivity can be queued for later publishing.
- Send Lightning zaps to people contributing useful road information!
- Nostr Wallet Connect (NIP-47) support.
- Secure Nostr login through Amber (NIP-55) and remote bunker signers (NIP-46). Your private key stays outside Roadstr.
🔎 SMARTER EXPLORATION
- Search addresses, businesses, brands, and points of interest using OpenStreetMap.
- Natural-language searches like "restaurants near me" or "gas stations along my route."
- Detailed place information, Wikipedia integration, and contextual amenities.
- Weather information along your journey.
- Open-data public transport itineraries where supported.
💾 MORE FREEDOM & CUSTOMIZATION
- Save places, parking locations, and complete routes.
- Encrypted, optional cross-device favorites synchronization through Nostr.
- Optional SearXNG integration for web search.
- 27 supported interface languages.
- Nostr Violet and Bitcoin Orange themes, with automatic dark mode.
- Integration with Tankful for sharing destinations directly into Roadstr.
🛠️ AND A LOT OF WORK UNDER THE HOOD
- A completely rewritten native Android architecture.
- Performance and battery optimizations.
- Improved GPS handling, navigation stability, and Nostr relay resilience.
- Extensive automated testing and real-device validation.
- An in-place upgrade path from the old 0.5.x releases, preserving supported user data and settings.
And of course, Roadstr is fully open source. No proprietary navigation platform, no mandatory Google account, and no centralized Roadstr traffic-reporting server. Download the code, break it, make it better, sell it, copy it, I don't care.
This project started with a simple idea: what if navigation could be open, community-driven, and powered by decentralized technology instead of another closed ecosystem?
Today, Roadstr 1.0.0 is one big step closer to that vision.
It's still an independent project, and there's plenty more to build. But reaching the first stable release feels like a huge milestone.
Thanks to everyone who has tested Roadstr, reported bugs, shared feedback, or simply followed its development ❤️

2026-09-24 18:11:22 GMT

Roadstr v0.5.10 is out. 🛣️
• Report police stations as a road event.
• The altitude readout is back on the MapLibre home screen
• Battery. A round of fixes for where the app was wasting power:
– map markers are built only when they can be on screen — before,
every one in range was rebuilt on every camera frame, off-screen
ones included, well over a thousand a frame in a city
– the map no longer re-renders when it hasn't visibly moved, and stops
animating entirely while the app is in the background, so
navigating with the screen off and just the voice is finally cheap
– the notification, compass and map-data downloads no longer run
when nothing can use them
• Navigation copes better with long routes and routes that double back.

They're published on nostr as kind 1315 and 1316. Osm doesn't see anything,it's all pseudonymous (linked to your nostr npub) and stored into relays for the amount of time relays decide to.
will look into police station reports, thanks for the suggestion.

Roadstr v0.5.9 is out — a security hardening release. 🔒
An independent audit turned up a few real issues, now fixed:
• Favorites sync was auto-publishing on every edit for anyone signed
in with Nostr, with no separate opt-in despite the app claiming it
was optional. Now off by default — a real "Sync automatically"
toggle in Settings.
• Logging in used to publish a profile-visibility event even if you
never touched the setting, tying your key to "uses Roadstr" for no
reason. Only publishes now if you actually chose public visibility.
• A relay outage could get hammered every ~1.25s forever instead of
backing off — fixed the reconnect logic.
• Capped a few unbounded growth paths in the Nostr event stream that a
flood of throwaway identities could have abused.
• Store listing no longer claims things that weren't true (GPS
handling, offline routing, license).

I think that maybe echnically it could be possible and probably smart people already did that.. But it depends on the actual HW, if it has an ARM SoC and runs Android/Linux already, in principle you could port something like LineageOS like you would do to a phone.
But shit could hit the fan when we're talking hw support: bootloader unlocking, kernel/device tree, GPU/display drivers, audio, touchscreen, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi etc I highly doubt that manufactures feel like sharing their stuff and dumping all the blobs of all the hw it's a project on it's own.

Roadstr v0.5.8 is out. 🛣️
New: "Avoid unpaved roads" — a routing preference that steers you away
from OSM-tagged tracks and dirt roads whenever a paved way exists.
Comes straight from a field report of a near-crash on a routed dirt
track — applied automatically to every route once you turn it on, and
always honest that it's a best-effort steer, never a guarantee.
Also in this release:
• Road reports made with no signal now queue and publish automatically
the moment you're back in coverage — no more losing a report because
the spot that needed it had no bars.
• Settings can be opened mid-navigation now, without stopping the trip.
• Off-route recalculation no longer boxes you into a U-turn after a
deliberate detour.
• "Recalculate" after a traffic-jam alert actually avoids the jam now.
• Fixed Bluetooth music/podcasts staying paused after voice guidance.
• Fixed GPS silently giving up after a location-provider hiccup.

Roadstr v0.5.7 — new look 🎨
Got tired of that flat material3 UI. So a new map design with a new collapsible home dashboard and consistent frosted-glass panels across the bottom bar, navigation HUD, route planning and search.
Also simplified the theme picker: dropped the "modern" gradient variants, keeping the four classic Nostr/Bitcoin themes (light and dark) sharp and consistent. If you'd picked a modern one, you're moved to its closest classic counterpart automatically.
Also fixed music/podcast stopping after an instruction came up.

2026-09-07 19:24:43 GMT

Roadstr v0.5.5 is out 🚸
Crosswalks and speed bumps now show up on the map at their exact position — same OSM sources OsmAnd+ draws them from.
Also fixed how search results are ranked: results actually matching your query are now sorted by pure distance from you instead of getting reshuffled by minor wording differences between a franchise's own branches. And if you type a city name at the end of a search, results actually in that city now get prioritized over merely closer ones.
Plus a couple of route-planner/map-interaction fixes: two-point planning now works without a live GPS fix, and long-press "report event here" is back for an arbitrary spot on the map.

Roadstr v0.5.3 is out 🚦
Traffic-light icons now show up on the map at every controlled intersection, right where OSM has them mapped — same idea as the existing speed-camera markers.
Also improved place search: searching a known brand/franchise now ranks a real name match above some unrelated shop that only happens to be closer. Nearby search also got one-tap restaurant and hotel categories.
And fixed a few voice-guidance quirks: the "you've arrived" cue no longer doubles up right before a close final turn, a turn announced in advance no longer gets cut off by its own follow-up cue, and duplicate hazard/speed-camera alerts from different nearby reports no longer repeat back to back.

Roadstr 0.5.0 is out — and it's a big one!
After a month of work, Roadstr now ships a full 3D map rendering engine (MapLibre) alongside the original one: real camera tilt, native map styling for light/dark themes, and the whole feature set — multi-stop routes, highway/toll-avoidance alternatives, public transport, ZTL warnings, speed camera alerts, voice guidance. Flip it on in Settings, switch back anytime — both keep working.
Zero Google Play Services in the build, same as every release before it.
Next stop: offline maps. 👀

2026-08-27 06:27:21 GMT

Roadstr 0.4.28 — dark mode no longer trusts a third party that can cut it off without warning.
The dark map tiles came from a free, anonymous CARTO endpoint. It started serving an "API KEY REQUIRED" watermark instead of tiles once some unpublished usage threshold was crossed — no notice, no grace period, just broken mid-drive for anyone in dark mode.
Dark mode now recolours the same OpenStreetMap tiles light mode already depends on: invert lightness, rotate hue 180° to undo the colour shift, then desaturate and darken so parks and water read as muted, not neon. One less service that can quietly revoke access to something free.
Will work on a better solutions, in the meanwhile I pushed the update to not give sunburn to people driving by night.

Roadstr 0.4.26 — round two of fixes from The Beave's field reports 🙏
• The merge maneuver icon was mirrored: a ramp joining from the right onto a road to your left rendered as the opposite. Confirmed against a real OSRM route before touching the code, not just the screenshot
• New setting: keep the screen on outside navigation too (off by default)
• New setting: a minimum screen brightness while the app is open, for OLED screens that dim past the point the map stays readable (off by default)
Still chasing one more report — dark mode not staying consistent on a longer drive. Verified the theme-switching plumbing is wired correctly; need more detail before touching code blind.

2026-08-21 06:41:17 GMT

Roadstr 0.4.25 is out — and every fix in it came from one person driving with the app and reporting what actually broke. Thank you @nprofile…pgem 🙏
Fixed this release:
• GPS no longer drops when you switch away from the app outside navigation — it used to release the receiver instantly, even for a 3-second glance at a notification
• A crash while panning the map mid-navigation exposed a missing global error handler. Added one — unexpected exceptions get logged now instead of taking the whole app down
• The map could still swing on turns sharper than 90°. A second cause behind the earlier roundabout fix: the heading correction was snapping instead of easing in
• The final spoken warning before a turn was capped at 120m of lead distance no matter your speed — 3.6s at 120km/h. Now scales up to 260m at 160km/h
• Spoken instructions could queue up and describe turns already behind you in dense junctions. Stale cues are dropped now instead of played late
• The hazard-report button used to jump sides between free-roam and navigation. Fixed in one place
This is what open, permissionless feedback looks like — no support ticket, no app store review queue, just a nym and a real driving session. Keep it coming.

Roadstr 0.4.24 is out. 🌍
Turn-by-turn instructions now exist in all 27 languages. Until today exactly two did — everyone else was navigated in English. Sorry guys!
And the map **should** have stopped swinging round. It was reading the route's direction from the nearest piece of it, and at a roundabout the exit arm passes metres from the entry arm pointing the opposite way. Now it reads from how far along you actually are.

Roadstr 0.4.22 is out. 🛠️
A crash that could kill the app mid-drive is fixed at the root: it came from the bundled speech library, untouched since Dec 2024 while twelve memory-safety fixes landed upstream — including in the very code that reads out distances. Rebuilt past all of them.
Limited traffic zones are now answered street by street: only the stretches actually restricted turn red, and "you're in a zone" shows only when you really are — not because one happens to be nearby.
Plus four new themes, a route drawn as a lit line, and time-to-arrival promoted over distance. Because what you're deciding is whether you'll make it, not how many km are left.
Still no Google, still no tracking.

Public transport routing lands: bus, tram, metro, rail, coach and ferry — worldwide, from openly published timetables. No account, no API key, no tracking.
Journeys are shown door to door: the walk to the stop, which stop and by when, each line in its operator's own colour, the changes, and the walk at the far end.
Also: bike routes from the planner, faster cold GPS fixes without Google, and the map no longer swings round when you leave a roundabout.

Roadstr 0.4.18 is out — and if you're on 0.4.17, update.
That release could crash mid-route. The map was opening a new database watcher on every GPS fix and couldn't close the old ones fast enough, so after a few minutes of driving it ran out of memory. Fixed, and covered by tests so it can't come back quietly.
Also fixed, all reported from an actual drive:
• Roundabout signs drew too many arms. Where a road meets a roundabout as two separate carriageways it got counted twice — a four-exit junction drew as seven. The spacing between those two points depends entirely on the size of the roundabout, so the fixed threshold could never work. It's measured from the ring now. And when the shape still can't be resolved confidently, a plain roundabout is drawn instead of a wrong one: on the road, a sign showing the wrong junction is worse than one showing no detail.
• The map no longer occasionally spins 180°. Standing still the GPS drifts, and the direction of travel was being measured from where it had drifted to.
• More restricted-traffic zones detected. Most are tagged in OpenStreetMap as time-limited, and those tags weren't being read at all — eleven restricted streets in one Italian city centre the app simply couldn't see before.

Roadstr 0.4.17 is out.
For our European Friends: roundabout signs now show the real junction. A router only tells you which exit to take — "third exit" describes a four-arm roundabout and a seven-arm one equally well, so the sign used to draw the same generic ring for both. The arm count now comes from OpenStreetMap, and the symbol looks like the junction you're actually approaching.
Feels like I'm 16 again: pick your cursor — city, racing, SUV, electric, bicycle, formula — and a redrawn speedometer.
One thing under the hood worth mentioning. The roundabout lookup batched every junction on your whole route into a single OpenStreetMap query. That's a piece of your itinerary sent in one request before you've even set off, and every other lookup in Roadstr only ever discloses where the car *is*, as you drive. Now it's capped, nearest first.

Roadstr 0.4.15
No Google code left in the app. None.
Roadstr was built to run on phones with no Google services, and it did. But the APK still carried Google Play Services code — fifteen classes it could never execute on the very devices this app exists for. Nobody put them there on purpose: they arrived as a dependency of the location plugin.
They are now gone.
com.google.android.gms.* 0 classes
com.google.android.play.* 0 classes
Google components in manifest none
What was there, and why it survived so long
Roadstr has always read your position through Android's own LocationManager — every single call site asks for it explicitly, which is what makes the app work on GrapheneOS, /e/OS and LineageOS without Google apps. The Play Services code was never called.
It shipped anyway because geolocator decides at runtime whether to use Google's fused provider or Android's own, so both remain reachable to the compiler. Excluding the library at the build level simply broke the build: the Google client will not compile without it.
What changed
geolocator_android 5.0.3 (MIT) is now vendored in the repository with the proprietary path removed — one file deleted, three lines changed, one dependency dropped. The Dart API is untouched.
Also removed: Google Play Store split-install and deferred-delivery classes, which Flutter links for apps that download parts of themselves from the Play Store. Roadstr does not.
What does not change
Nothing about how location works. Same provider, same accuracy, same behaviour on de-Googled phones — there is simply nothing else left beside it now. Location permissions are unchanged.
Get it on @nprofile…zjna or directly from Github (via Obtanium) at https://github.com/roadstrapp/roadstr-app/releases/tag/v.0.4.15
F-Droid repo incoming as soon as it's approved.

Small update today since I'm not driving much these days.
Roadstr 0.4.13 is out.
The cursor now points where you're actually going. Outside navigation it used to follow the phone's compass — in a cradle at an angle, that meant it pointed across the road instead of along it. Now it follows your GPS course whenever you're moving, and stays glued to the road through curves.
Also in this one:
• Add your own relay for favourites sync. Public relays promise nothing about how long they keep your data — one you run or pay for does.
• Search sends far less traffic while you type.
• Reconnects and map lookups back off instead of hammering a service that's already struggling. Better battery on a bad connection.
• A pile of hardening: hostile relays can't grow the app's memory, remote text is length-capped, LNURL lookups reject addresses that look public but resolve inward.

Roadstr 0.4.12 is out
NEARBY — tap the search box and, without typing a word, one tap tells you where the closest fuel, supermarket, cash machine, pharmacy, hospital, police station, post office, parking or charger is. Within 5 km of wherever you actually are, nearest first, distance on every row. Straight from OpenStreetMap tags, so it reads the same in Berlin, Tokyo, Nairobi or São Paulo — and places OSM never gave a name to are kept, not dropped: an unbranded pump or a cash machine in a wall is exactly what you were looking for.
And a number that had been lying to you: "avoid motorways & tolls" was quoting travel times from a different routing engine than every other route on screen. Checked on 29 real journeys over 350 km across six continents, plus ferries, islands and toll bridges.
Also in this build:
• Four relays instead of two, each verified to really store and serve Roadstr events — reports go to all of them, and all four are asked at once, so redundancy costs no waiting
• "My reports" is no longer empty: the profile was asking a single relay that kept refusing connections
• No more crash when updating the speed limit on one of your speed camera reports
• Restricted traffic zone (ZTL/ZAC) warning is back on screen
• Speed limit sign no longer hangs around after the route preview
• The map moves the moment you open it, instead of waiting for a cold GPS lock
• Fewer pointless reroutes
• Voice guidance speaks at 1.30× by default, so instructions land before the junction
• Auto dark theme off by default: your theme stays your theme
• 21 strings finally translated into all 26 languages
As usual, free, no account, no tracking. OpenStreetMap for the map, Nostr for the road reports, Lightning for the tips.

All right, as usual your report is very useful and detailed, thanks!
It seems that everything should be fixed. I'll be testing this build in this upcoming week and if everything goes as planned, I'll release it.
The v.0.4.12 will also include the "profile and reputation" feature (right now it's just a stub and a placeholder).
As of now, users only know their own reputation, but it will be either public or pseudonymous (client side, relays know everything, obviously).

I'm on a long trip as well, noticed that when for a reason or another, the cursor does not linger over the polyline. This somehow tricks the navigation routing into thinking that you're still on course but have to go back to trip the point where the cursor is expected to pass.
I momentarily fixed it by restarting the routing, but it's obviously an issue that needs addressing.
Thanks for the feedback!

Roadstr v0.4.6 (
ZTL (limited-traffic zones)
Fixed a bug that made ZTL detection silently fail since the feature shipped. The Overpass query used ["name"~"ZTL","i"] — the quoted "i" is a syntax error in Overpass QL (case-insensitive regex needs an unquoted ,i), so every ZTL fetch failed, on every mirror, from day one.
Rewrote ZTL detection to match how Italian zones are actually mapped. Italian ZTLs are tagged per-street (motor_vehicle=permit, access=no/destination, highway=pedestrian), not as named polygons — the old polygon-only query returned nothing even after the syntax fix. Detection is now proximity-based (≤12 m from a restricted way) in addition to the legacy polygon lookup, verified live against Ravenna's centro storico (251 restricted ways) and cross-checked against the ~350 Italian cities that do use the official boundary=limited_traffic_zone polygon tag.
Removed the overpass.osm.ch mirror. It turned out to be a Switzerland-only data extract that returned HTTP 200 with zero results for anywhere else — every dependent feature (ZTL, speed limits, speed cameras, POI search) silently read that as "nothing here." Replaced with two verified worldwide mirrors.
Verified live against 24 cities worldwide (12 European historic centres, 12 US cities/car-free towns) to check the new detection actually generalises rather than just fixing Italy. Works well anywhere OSM has restricted-access tagging; known gap where a town's equivalent has never been mapped by the local OSM community (e.g. Tangier Island, VA); intentionally does not flag toll-only zones (NYC congestion pricing, London ULEZ) as ZTL, since those don't restrict entry.
The warning banner now shows the correct local term instead of the Italian "ZTL" everywhere — "ZTL" in Italy and France (both use the same official term), "ZAC" in Portugal, a generic translated phrase elsewhere. Countries with no single official acronym (Spain, Germany, UK…) no longer get one invented for them.
Fixed the spoken ZTL warning, which previously had translations for only 9 of the app's 27 languages and silently fell back to English for the rest.
Navigation
Map no longer flips 180° mid-drive. A GPS multipath glitch could teleport a fix 20+ m backward with an inverted bearing, slipping past the existing distance-based filter. A direction reversal during active navigation is now trusted only after two consecutive GPS samples agree on it — a real U-turn confirms itself on the next fix, a glitch doesn't.
Voice no longer repeats the same instruction 3–4 times on approach to a manoeuvre. The same normalised instruction is now suppressed for 12 seconds at the single choke-point every announcement passes through.
Navigation cursor sits further down the screen, trading a bit of "behind you" for more visible road ahead.
Renamed the button on the pin/place-info panels from "Start navigation" (which actually opened a route preview) to "Show route preview" — "Start navigation" now only appears where navigation genuinely starts.
Security
A malicious relay could have redirected Lightning zaps to its own wallet. fetchLightningAddress trusted a relay's kind-0 profile event without checking its id hash, signature, or that the pubkey matched the person being zapped — fixed by verifying every profile event the same way road events already were.
Logging out no longer destroys local data. It previously called deleteAll() on secure storage, wiping the encrypted-settings key along with it — undecryptable on next launch, silently taking favourites, history and routing/NWC config with it. Logout now removes only the 5 Nostr-identity keys.
One-time report/confirmation fetches (profile screen) now verify event signatures and enforce one-vote-per-identity, matching the live subscription's rules — previously trusted unverified relay data and allowed repeat votes.
Amber (NIP-55) event publishing now broadcasts to all configured relays instead of only the primary one, matching nsec-login behaviour.
NIP-44 decryption now enforces the exact padded length the spec prescribes, rejecting malformed payloads other implementations would also refuse.
Consolidated three duplicated event-verification implementations into one shared, tested helper.

New release v.0.4.3
## v0.4.3 (12)
### 🚗 Navigation
- **Speed limits actually work now.** The root cause: `annotations=maxspeed` is a Mapbox-only extension — vanilla OSRM (including the FOSSGIS server we use) never returned it. Speed limits now come from Overpass, with class-based inference (motorway/trunk/residential/living_street) for the many roads that have no explicit `maxspeed` tag, 3 rotating mirrors for reliability, and support in free-roam driving (not just active navigation).
- **Recenter button** now pulls a fresh one-shot GPS fix instead of reusing the last stream sample, so it snaps to your *actual* current position.
- **Compass/heading button** is a real toggle in both navigation and free-roam — free-roam heading-up mode now rotates the map with the magnetometer instead of doing nothing.
- **Secondary instruction panel** (next-turn preview) enlarged ~100% — bigger icon, bigger text, easier to read at a glance.
### 🔊 Voice
- Turn instructions and hazard/ZTL alerts no longer cut each other off mid-sentence. Maneuvers are priority (interrupt immediately); ambient alerts queue and wait their turn, keeping only the most recent one.
- Fixed a race in audio ducking where a stale utterance could release focus meant for a new one, breaking the "duck other media" behavior.
### 🔒 Security
- Nostr events are now cryptographically verified (event hash + BIP-340 signature) before being trusted — a malicious relay could previously fabricate road reports or confirmations under any pubkey.
- One vote per identity per event confirmation (was previously unlimited/re-countable).
- Local settings (favorites, search history) are now AES-256 encrypted at rest, key held in the Android Keystore.
- `debugPrint` is silenced in release builds — no more street names/coordinates/TTS phrases in logcat.
- Event comments capped at 500 chars to prevent relay-side payload abuse.
### 🎬 Onboarding
- Welcome page now shows the real app logo and a privacy notice recommending a VPN (Mullvad, Bitcoin-payable) given that road reports propagate over Nostr.
- nsec login page now shows the same security disclaimer as the profile screen.
- Fixed the Kokoro voice download completion indicator — it was implemented but never actually triggered (listener was waiting on a stream event that never fires); now shows a white check on a green circle when the download finishes.
- GrapheneOS guidance now mentions setting location permission to "Allow all the time," not just "while in use."

This is gold, thanks man. I am still working on the istructions, they still come either too early or they overlap with each other, i gotta think of a logic to impart to be more precise. But the 3km alert I did it on purpose. When traveling long distances on highways, IMO it makes sense to have an early alert and then another alert 250m beforehand.
The premature end is another thing that I'm testing. This morning results were promising, but I only tested on a 5km city trip.
The annoying bug of starting on x road should be already fixed, but further testing is needed.
Great feedback overall, I'm gonna work on those improvements. Thanks again!

I encountered these issues as well, I am working to fix them, especially the re-routing and and voice issue.
As for the auto dark, as of now there is a toggle to switch it on and off manually, I'll think of a better solution to give more control to the user.
Imperial will be implemented with tonight's update.
As for avoid tolls and such, afaik OSM doesn't manage those, so the user will have to switch to GraphHopper provider. There is a free API key with 500 "calls" or a paid plan.
I'll be working on those too as well, hoping to provide a free and open alternative.
Ps. Be careful, it's still a beta so drive safe!

NEW RELEASE! roadstr.v.0.4.0.apk
🚀
First-launch onboarding
New
4-page flow on first install: features showcase → Nostr identity → permissions → ready.
Nostr login via Amber NIP-55 (recommended) or nsec key (stored in Android Keystore). Profile name and avatar are fetched from the relay immediately after login.
Dedicated GrapheneOS guidance: grant Precise location (not Approximate) and "Allow always" — not just while in use — to keep GPS active in background.
Optional Kokoro AI voice model download (82 MB) with live progress bar. Can be deferred to Settings → Navigation voice.
Pages are freely swipeable left/right. Fully localised in all 27 supported languages.
Existing users who had already accepted the disclaimer skip onboarding automatically.
⚠️
ZTL / restricted zone ahead warning
Safety
The app now checks whether an upcoming turn leads into a restricted traffic zone at the moment the instruction is announced — before the user enters.
An orange banner and a spoken voice warning trigger at that point. One warning per step, no repeated alerts.
Distinct from the existing red banner shown when already inside a ZTL. The two states never stack.
Warning text is localised — spoken in the user's language at runtime.
🔄
Missed-turn rerouting
Navigation
After advancing to a new step, a 2.5-second guard timer verifies the user is actually approaching the next waypoint.
If distance hasn't improved by 20 m and speed is above 3 km/h, a silent reroute triggers automatically.
🔊
TTS announcement improvements
Navigation
Urban steps now receive an immediate voice announcement right after a maneuver is completed, replacing the previous premature 220 m trigger.
Announcement distances adapt to road type and current speed.
TTS near-threshold (50 m) preserved on all road types.
📍
Cursor styles overhaul
UI
7 selectable cursors rendered from SVG assets via flutter_svg: Arrow, Muscle Car, SUV, Compact, Vespa, Racing Moto, Bicycle.
Settings replaced the icon grid with a dropdown with live icon preview.
All icons point north (direction of travel); heading rotation applied at the marker level.
🌐
Localisation sweep
i18n
Event report categories, transport mode chips, navigation time labels, and weather descriptions are now fully localised across all 27 supported languages.
40 new ARB keys added covering all onboarding screen strings — titles, CTAs, body text, and error messages.
Short UI strings (buttons, titles) fully translated in all 27 locales. Longer body texts fall back to English where professional translation is unavailable.
🔧
Other improvements
Polish
Preview panel (route start) now supports a drag-to-close gesture with spring-back animation, matching the Alternatives panel.
Secondary nav instruction row now shows distance to next maneuver.
Speed limit exceeded → red speedometer arc, text and border.

Just rawdogged my nsec into the login screen of the app I am building instead of using an extension or signer, just for fun. No extension, no webLN, just pure manual copy-paste action. It felt illegal typing it out, but the implementation works perfectly. Screens looks clean though 😂
