Abdul El-Sayed: "Fighting for rights that you don't use or you may not understand is about fighting for rights generally. We're being told that if we only give up, if we sacrifice the rights of some people, then the rest of us get to keep our rights - which we all know is some bullshit"
exactly
people's rights are supposed to be exhaustive and non-negotiable, government powers are supposed to be clearly enumerated and hard to expand
the moment you suddenly decide that some group of people is outside your protection, or some activity, despite not causing harm to others, is too outrageous to be legally allowed, you create a gap, which authoritarians will inevitably try to wedge themselves through

cynicism is absolutely poisonous to politics
if you don't expect any of your local politicians to stand for anything, and just treat them all as interchangeable corrupt douchebags, the end result is going to be an environment where corruption and cronyism runs amok
and we already got plenty of that, alright?
i don't want every country's politics to turn into a variation of early 20th century u.s., where instead of running on a consistent set of ideals or at least practical concerns, parties just draft random communities in order to get their votes (apparently, back then you'd have, as an example, the democrats in some city pledging support to the local irish community and the republicans to the polish community, and the only reason to vote for a party would be so it would benefit your community specifically)

i have a question for speakers of different languages regarding how the software you are using expresses the concept of "an action is currently happening" (examples in english: "Downloading updates..." / "Saving report.doc, please wait...")
so far i see the following options, please correct me or provide with additional ones, or info on languages i have not mentioned
#german / #deutsch: passive voice with phrases such as "wird heruntergeladen" (is being downloaded)
#french / #français: nouns corresponding to verbs, such as "lecture" (reading), "téléchargement" (down-/uploading) and "enregistrement" (saving)
#russian / #русский: likewise verbal nouns, such as "чтение" (reading), "загрузка" (loading/uploading), "сохранение" (saving)
#italian / #italiano: verbal nouns ending in -aggio
#japanese / #日本語: verbs ending in 中

@nprofile…snss oh, i remember a video called "near science" where three university guys did exactly that
they wrote a series of nonsense papers using a random generator, sent those to a dubious science publication, they got accepted
then they offered to speak at that journal's conference, but were rejected
doesn't matter, they booked the next conference room at the same hotel and held it themselves, complete with silly costumes and snacks, even had a few attendees (though they had to change the poster at the last minute to remove any suggestion that the journal is endorsing them)

if there's one thing that i'd want killed in politics, it's the expectation that any liberal or left-wing politician is still held fully responsible for whatever happened (or might have happened) under their (or "their") rule decades ago, whereas any conservative blunders are forgotten near-instantly
trump's first term was a disaster he actively caused, and somehow that was forgotten enough that biden's disappointing four years suddenly made enough people go "you know what, trump was fine actually, let's elect him again"
whereas any bad move by a politician on the other side is remembered for decades
some people still think the democrats hate video games because, back in the 1990s, joe lieberman and hillary clinton saw that video games were not rated the same way movies are, with nintendo, sega and other publishers basically coming up with their own inconsistent private censorship rules and rating systems, and threatened the industry with regulation if they wouldn't get their shit together
the latter part is what happened, when the video game industry created the ESRB, a private board that hands out ratings for north american releases of games -- basically the same way the MPAA, another private board, rates movies
ultimately, this was a good thing for gaming (including players who like violence, sex jokes and characters with boobs), because instead of nintendo forcing all games to be squeaky-clean or sega having to hide blood behind a cheat code, now there was a single consistent system that made the parents' question of "should i buy this game for my little timmy?" easy to answer
and now with online distribution, it's possible (and easy) to make and sell games without an ESRB rating at all -- platforms like steam and itch can show an ESRB rating for a game if one exists, but they now also have their own private content warning system that works internationally and provides more detailed information
but nooooo, instead we had gamergaters go "we can't let hillary clinton win or she'll remove sexy women from gaming!!", all because of a position she held as a bargaining tactic 20 years before (you might notice that the united states, as a country with a tradition of free speech, has very few restrictions on violence and sex in regards to books, movies and music, the idea that gaming would suddenly get a government censorship board even though most other entertainment industries were allowed to self-regulate would be absurd, that was the goal in the first place)
even though, on this specific issue, hillary clinton already won, and that victory made things better for you and other sexy video game women appreciators specifically

@nprofile…mefp honestly i was thinking that the "next generation" of shell tools needs a special "automated" parameter, where instead of outputting human-formatted strings and tables, they'd use some kind of binary database-like format that then could be processed more quickly
for the end user, a separate tool could read it, do queries on it and draw a text-based table
and for the programmer, the tools to do math, run queries on it, create new structures in the same format, etc., could be built right into the shell language
this would fix a lot of problems, but most importantly, developers could add extra columns to the table or change the human-based formatting of data without breaking automation (a lot of shell tools today are stuck displaying things in the same format as in the 1970s and 80s because of scripting)
the closest we have right now is that some tools offer JSON or XML as a format, but these are still text-based and have tons of overhead when reading and writing

so after using both #GNOME and #KDE #Plasma for a while, here are the things i like about both:
GNOME has good touchpad gestures, whereas Plasma seems not to
GNOME is better at hiding settings that are not applicable to the current system -- for instance, KDE System Settings shows a touchscreen item for me, even though my computer does not have a touchscreen
GNOME has a way better #esperanto localization
GNOME's way of combining an app launcher and app switcher appeals to me personally
GNOME's app launcher doesn't bother with the XDG categorization of apps and allows the user to easily put app launchers in folders and sort them however they like -- the XDG categorization is not bad, but it can cause clutter (e.g. i have stellarium installed, and it is the only app in the 'education' category)
as does the fact that GNOME's top panel is quite narrow, more like that of macOS or iOS/Android, leaving more space for the actual windows
GNOME has built-in integration with #usbguard, automatically allowing new USB devices authorization, but only when the screen is unlocked, whereas if i want to use it with KDE, i have to use usbguard-notifier and manually approve each device
GNOME's weather applet supports my city, whereas KDE's doesn't
GNOME doesn't seem to mess with KDE settings the way KDE messes with GNOME's, when i was switching from KDE back to GNOME i had to use gnome tweaks and dconf editor to reset a bunch of settings, this should not be a thing, the user should not have to use unofficial tools to un-screw-up their settings after using a different DE for a while
KDE is better at offering the user new interesting functionality in a non-intrusive way
KDE is more customizable, i don't care for that much myself, but there are people who want to "make their computer their own" and i can see why KDE would appeal to those users
KDE's tray items are more useful than GNOME's, allowing more things to be done without opening the settings app, i in particular like how the hotspot functionality is available straight away
KDE providing its own server-side title bar to apps is a good thing, i know that GNOME devs prefer client-side titlebars, but for windowed games and apps that don't need one, having to use libdecor is probably unnecessary
overall i still like GNOME more and will keep using it, but i'm now more informed about both

@nprofile…3dla at least in my experience, a domain name being caught in a "suspicious website" database used by firefox or chrome (optional in both) causes a serious warning to appear before the target website is even loaded, with a clear enough message that isn't covered in technical detail -- the kind my mom, or any other my-mom-like user, would be more likely to actually consider instead of clicking "just let me through"

@nprofile…3dla okay, like android. same scenario.
my mom is reading knitting advice in a channel through a messenger app, she sees a message alongside that says "to get a chance to win {amount}, click this link" (some channels do run legit raffles like that, but usually just asking to be subscribed, not that out of the ordinary), she clicks the link and approves to the "Do you want to register https://somewebsite.org/ to handle protocol?" question, not quite understanding that it asks to overtake her bank's payment links
next time she wants to pay for some sick child's cancer treatment or her utility bills, she clicks a (legitimate, trustworthy) link to do so
she gets a box with a choice between, say
💸 Quick Payment (the scam link)
🏦 (name of her actual bank's app)
[Open Once][Open Always]
sadly, i do not trust my mom enough to make the correct choice
and a more clever fraudster could run a more randomized version, where instead of "Quick Payment", the name is instead the name of a random popular bank app. now, if my mom is unlucky enough (or, as she has several cards from different banks, it hits another bank she also coincidentally has an app for), she might not have any clue that someone's hijacked the link at all
(speaking of, "like android" actually makes it so that, if you have google services installed, no other app can even offer the ability to intercept google-specific links)

<silly>i hope the organization that develops the HTML standard, the World Wide Web Consortium, will come to a good agreement with the organization that develops the fediverse's ActivityPub standard, the *checks notes* World Wide Web Consortium</silly>
but seriously, the problem is that any of the possible approved schemes may be used by some bank or crypto app or some internal application within a company for opening a third-party application, and the risk of those suddenly becoming available to any web app that bothers calling for a registration is significant
i hope we get a standard fedi: or ap: scheme, but this isn't a decision that would be made lightly, because we don't know who else might be using these already for something else
and i don't want anyone to be able to register any scheme, because i don't want my mom or grandma (or anyone else's mom or grandma, for that matter) to accidentally click a link on her phone, make one wrong "yes" choice, so that later the next few donations to sick children or utilities bills she has to pay (which i have personally seen using URI schemas to redirect to the appropriate bank!) get send to some fraudster instead

2026-01-10 09:15:26 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…3dla well, fedi ain't gonna be a scheme, because it won't be registerable in a standard-compliant web browser
and non-standard headers typically don't have the power to call third-party apps or websites, if there were an X-Send-An-Email-Before-Visit: subject+contents header, people would probably be considering banning it or at the very least adding a warning box

@nprofile…3dla they're not normally used by centralized services that have their own apps (like telegram), because a centralized service already has your cookie and therefore knows if you're using the web app or the regular app
but you could absolutely make web+fediverse:[email protected] be a kind of scheme that resolves into https://toot.cat/@[email protected] on my instance, https://mastodon.ml/@[email protected] on yours and opens the corresponding profile view in Tuba or Tokodon

2026-01-10 09:00:45 GMT

@nprofile…3dla
it's still possible to use a scheme for fedi that works in both web clients and proper apps, it'll just be web+fediverse instead of fediverse
a modern web browser typically has strict policies to prevent most ruinous single-click actions. if someone, say, wanted to make an arbitrary website that steals money from a bank user, they'd basically have to force the end user to give them all of their login information again -- giving the user (or their anti-malware software, or the web browser's list of suspicious websites, which both ff and chrome have) an opportunity to notice, say, that they're on yourbankneme.com instead of yourbankname.com. registering a fake scheme handler for "send X money to Y" that instead changes the link to "send X money to Z" and redirects to where it normally would not only is a single-click operation, but then everything after that happens in the legit bank app, the user might only notice something went wrong after several transactions were misdirected

2026-01-10 08:34:43 GMT

- reply

@nprofile…3dla
it's not the browsers that limit the list of registerable links, it's the HTML standard
i believe this list is meant for backwards compatibility, most protocols in it are things that existed for quite some time, and new protocols that can be openable in either a third-party app or a web browser should use the web+something protocol specifier instead
the goal is probably to make it so that a user can't accidentally agree to let some web app intercept links to handle potentially vital information (i've seen these protocols used for telling bank apps and cryptocurrency apps "send X money to Y account" -- now imagine the abuse potential if someone accidentally lets an abusive website handle these instead -- bye bye, all the money!)

⊕ it is set during christmastime
⊖ it does not embody any of the traditional themes of a christmas movie
⊕ "home alone" is almost universally regarded as a christmas movie, and that one is basically a kid-friendly version of "die hard", so by transitive property "die hard" is a christmas movie too
⊖ bruce willis is very insistent it isn't one
⊕ it sure seems like at this point we all think about "die hard" during christmastime more than at other times of the year

(looks it up)

@nprofile…8nar @nprofile…26v2 a lot of early online-multiplayer games, usually shooters, didn't use a centralized system, but instead relied on two things:
"multiplayer servers" (or just "servers"), run by individual players, clans of players or organizations. some games even had an option to start a server right in the main menu, but the game dev usually also provided windows, mac and linux binaries to run a "dedicated" server without needing to have the whole game
a simple "master server" or "hub" whose job it is to provide a list of available servers to the player upon connection. usually a server would "advertise" itself to one or more hubs, and the latter would run periodical checks to make sure it's still running. that's it.
when the player starts the game and chooses the "online play" option for the first time, the game connects to the hub and gets its list of servers, then checks them for ping, number of players, description, etc., the player can then connect to any one of them and play. some servers can be password-protected, some can be "private" (not advertised on any hub) and require manually entering an IP address and port. either way, once the player connects to a server, the game dev's responsibility ends, the servers are run independently. (though the dev can still ban some servers from appearing on their official hub if they break the more serious rules, like being very abusive)
the player can add some servers as "favorites" to be able to connect to them more easily.
even better, some games allow to not just use the one provided hub, but many different ones, meaning that all it would take to independently resurrect such a game is for someone to launch a new hub server (which, as mentioned before, is usually a very simple piece of software that can be recreated or reverse-engineered from scratch and doesn't need a lot of resources) and enough fans to start a few dedicated servers.
this system has several benefits:
different servers can customize the game experience heavily. some will cater to new players, some to competitive players, some will run scripts that make the game itself very different.
instead of the game's dev having to react to complaints of cheating, abuse or unsportsmanlike behavior, each server's admins are in charge, and they would be more inclined to react properly, since the players could easily switch to another server with better moderation
players can more easily form a community with other players who frequent the same server(s)
players who value low ping values will self-select with other players in their local area
and a lot of games running on this system still have big communities despite lack of official support: quake 3, unreal tournament, counter-strike 1... multiplayer source ports of old games, like doom (see odamex, zandronum, zdaemon) also use this system.

@nprofile…d23x @nprofile…kq6d technically one can do that, but that still only works perfectly if you're upscaling something by an integer amount
if you have a piece of UI that needs to get upscaled by, say, 167% or 250%, all those meticulously placed 1px borders and bevels will become 1⅔ or 2.5px, which depending on the renderer will result in blur or imprecise rounding that looks off
this is part of the reason why desktop UIs still prefer to maintain specific scale ratios (e.g. gnome can be scaled 100%, 150% or 200%, but not anything else), whereas mobile UIs support wider ranges

the more i see software developers make localization mistakes (such as using the same string for "post" (verb, on a button to make a post) and "post" (noun, on a header when viewing a post), the more i continue to insist that they learn at least a bit of #esperanto
you can learn enough of it in two or three months to be able to read a wide variety of texts, and its grammar is clear enough that it avoids ambiguities that cause localization problems for monolingual english speakers
even if you never speak a word of esperanto again, just thinking about "oh, this is a button to make a post, so i'd use the verb form 'afiŝi' there, and that is a header displayed when viewing a specific post, so the noun form 'afiŝo' makes more sense there" when writing the localization strings will make it much easier for people who want to localize your app or website for french, german, russian, etc. (and probably also other languages, but i don't have enough expertise in that)

so i tried out #ghostty with the same test i use for all terminals (tmux, same session, vertically split panes showing cmatrix and htop)
and ghostty still consumes more CPU than #foot, a terminal emulator that doesn't even have GPU acceleration #terminal #linux #wayland

how many %s will it take to screw in a light bulb, open source desktop edition:
GNU developers: 2, one to screw it in and one to rewrite the light fixture in Lisp
GNOME developers: 3: one to pick a light bulb that only outputs specific ranges of wavelengths determined by committee to be the most universally soothing, one to screw it in, one to add optional tracking of your GPS coordinates and atomic time via systemd so that the light can be set up to match the sun's natural brightness
KDE developers: 5, one to pick the most customizable light bulb on the market, one to screw it in, one to install the control panel and two to haul all the required dependencies into the room
Wayland protocol developers: 2, one to screw it in and one to discover that the power grid it's plugged into is insufficiently protected and a hacker could theoretically use carefully timed pulses to cause seizures in people, so we should replace it with a new one that has surge protectors everywhere. the next year is spent designing such a power grid, but for now the light bulb runs at half brightness just to be sure
independent Wayland compositor devs (sway, hyprland, niri, labwc, etc.): nominally 5, but they'll bring their own light bulbs and mostly keep arguing over which one is the best and which supports which features. you walk in, grab a step-ladder and all 5 bulbs and spend the next few months switching them around until you find one that fits you personally

why the heck is the #esperanto translation for #peertube's "stats for nerds" menu item "agordoj por saĝulaĉoj"?
agordoj = settings, tuning
por = for
saĝulaĉoj = "wise people", except the -aĉ- suffix implies the people are bad at being wise

@npub19zq…u4m5 labwc is the closest we have, but it's still very unpolished, and it only supports the openbox theme config partially

@npub19zq…u4m5 @npub1n2s…hkx2 firefox sync is absolutely still a thing tho
and "firefox focus" afaik is meant to be an alternative browser for iOS where until recently you weren't allowed to use engines other than webkit

@npub19zq…u4m5 when said user base is only 3% of all users, doing that will at best make sure those 3% stay the same
from a statistical point of view, it's way more attractive to try and bring even a small percentage of the 97% onto your side instead.
imagine if, say, firefox's next new feature brings in 1% of that 97% while alienating 10% of the existing user base. the end result would still be a (0.01 * 0.97 - 0.03 * 0.10) = 0.0067 or 0.67% increase. it'll be a risk worth taking.

people who say "mozilla should just invest completely in making a fast lightweight web browser and they'll regain their marketshare" are sadly mistaken
out of all the history of software displacing other software i've seen, it is almost never about quantitative improvements ("20% faster", "10% less battery consumption", etc.)
if that were the case, desktop linux wouldn't be stuck at 3% market share
usually it is either about some sort of killer feature (like when IE was dethroned by firefox for having tabs or in some places by opera for being optimized for slow internet connections)
or about being the first in a certain niche (like how smartphone-targeted messengers displaced old IM apps like AOL, ICQ, MSN etc. by being better-suited for smartphones and having an easy phone-number-based way to keep contacts, even though those previous protocols actually had more features
maybe the folks at mozilla are foolish for chasing trends, but i don't know what else i would do in their place

dear youtube,
please stop automatically offering translated subtitles
sometimes i watch videos with subs in english, sometimes russian, sometimes esperanto
i don't need you to remember my last choice and then automatically offer some crappy translated version whenever one of those options is missing
i especially don't need a translation into English from English (Canada)
