The next step is to install a #tailscale subnet router in the homelab and then you have protected access by DNS name to all the services from wherever you are. You might need a DNS server in the lab to make this work since you tell Tailscale to use the local DNS server to resolves DNS names when you are connected to the tailnet. #Technitium

absolutely, and they will hate you for it. You don't do compliance to make friends

if you are doing compliance you CAN"T do the work and fix things. That is separation of duties, one of the important tenants of compliance and auditing. That is one of the things that makes the role more relaxing, you need to have other people do the work.

If you're willing to stay in tech but want to avoid the constant emergencies and putting out of fires, look into a compliance role. That's where I ended up before retiring and it was pretty chill compared to my sysadmin days. You get to spend your days reviewing policies and telling people they are doing things wrong.

the part you're not highlighting is that the air conditioner shuts off only if the side door is open. What's wrong with that? It's like running your home a/c with the windows open. No one would do that. The driver just needs to close the door and it will be nice and cool when they get back in

I'm not familiar with that plant but the standard weed removal adhice if you don't want to use chemicals is to dig it up by root and remain vigilant. It may take multiple seasons.

This is the basic problem with the US health insurance industry. The government wants everyone to treat it like a free market product where companies will compete for customers and keep prices under control. But health care is not a typical free market product. You can't wait until broken legs go on sale to get your leg fixed. You can't get accurate pricing information on procedures and medications, and even when you can, your insurance company might not allow you to go to the cheaper facility.
Medicare basically controls what the private insurance carriers will cover and what they will pay for those procedures anyway so the idea that there will ever be true competition is silly.

Nothing personal, but I always love seeing people put all 4 screws in a 1U switch. How much do you think it weighs? I used to rack 4U video gear with 2 screws.

I ended up in the same place. I love #pihole but eventually I got tired of managing it and I was looking for something that would also work when I was away from home. For $20 NextDNS is simple to configure and does the job.
I manage technology for my day job, I don't really want to do it at home too.

agreed. This seems like a solution in search of a problem. I usually ride traditional bikes but I tried a friend's ebike. It was a catch 22. It's so much heavier than a non ebike that you need the asset to make up for the extra weight. I don't see anyone doing a century on an ebike and needing a quick mid ride charging

2025-07-29 12:24:06 GMT

That's great but if it requires a proprietary charger it's going to be caught in the same catch 22 as electric cars. I want to charge my ebike at work, or at a friends house. I don't want to design my ride around charging locations.

You can't rip and replace every time something better comes along since a better model is going to come out next week/month/year. They will stick with what is working until the ROI for the rip and replace makes it worth doing so.

it's not just a matter of length. A password of "thisisaverylongpassword" is 23 characters but would be cracked in minutes (seconds?) Overall password complexity (entropy) is also very important to creating passwords that cannot be easily guessed or brute forced

Having worked tech support, this is definitely true. 95% of the time, there is something going on, but the user has not described the problem correctly to you. I always ignore the users' suggestions for the cause/resolution, they are wrong 95% of the time also.

The other day I was in the grocery store with someone who was doing that and almost shouting into their speaker phone. I started shouting back answers to the questions they were asking. Eventually they gave me a nasty look and moved to a different part of the store. If you find me dead someday it's from being overly passive aggressive like that

The problem is that it's self fulfilling. I tried to get my employer to stop posting on Twitter but their response was "we know it's not great, but that's where our clients/potential clients are". So people stay because not all companies will leave, making it worth it for the companies to stay, and so on.
