Design "refreshes" are the most fascinating thing in software development. Few things enjoy such unquestionable inevitability. How strange it is to present a design "language" as objectively better and thoughtfully considered, only to discard it in a few years.
Nothing is iconic these days because iconic things must endure to gain that status, but nothing can be allowed to endure for so long. Freshness becomes the only value. The ever molting skin must reveal a tender surface.
Whatever it is, it is far from design.

The half a year doing nothing sounds both awesome and awful to me right now. I'd rather not have something decide for me in the future. Thanks for sharing your story and good luck!

I've been stuck a few times in my life, but I feel like I'm well and truly stuck. I'm heading towards 20 years into my career in software, and I'm not sure I can stay where I am anymore. I just look at all of the stuff my company is making and I don't see myself taking part in it. Even for the things I could work on, because I'm remote, I'm not an option, not to mention the full-on AI hypnosis. I believe a lot of people are just going with the flow and don't feel like they can change anything. The social pulse is nearly flatline. The products aren't that interesting, the design isn't great, the ux is increasingly hostile, and the software doesn't inspire confidence, especially as more of it is LLM slop. It's a really depressing blend.
I'm more well off than a lot of people, but probably couldn't just retire and there is still a lot more I want to do. Is it software? I think I've got a decent resume, but I still don't perceive that I have the mobility I would want to just quit. And where would I go, anyway? Where would be worth upending my whole life? I've got all of this pent up energy and I need to put it to use or I'll lose my mind.

I have always said that SDL is one of the greatest C APIs of all time, and one of the best APIs ever made, period. And I still think that.
That said, I finally took a good look at Raylib, and I am speechless. Holy shit dude. I'm about to walk a floppy to a Kinko's a print out that cheat sheet and hide it under my bed like a teenager.

Damn that sucks dude. Look on to bright side though, you just wrote "The myth or computational objectivity prevails," which could literally be carved into a monument

One thing that really makes me sad when the first line of a repo’s readme has “with help from Claude” is the apparent diligence with “giving credit” to a nonexistent person, as if Anthropic doesn’t have immense disdain and ingratitude for the struggles and meaning of the work they ate.
On top of that, it’s voluntary and free advertising. It’s like going out of your way to put “Made with the help of Microsoft 365” in the header of your documents. I cannot take someone like this seriously, but it crushes my soul all the same.

I doubt any of my followers need to hear this, but I just have to say that people need to take ruthless control of their devices and anyone who changes things or gets in your face needs to get thrown out on their ass.
If some stranger came into your house and replaced all of your furniture, or knocked on your door every day to tell you to use some service, you’d freak the fuck out. So freak the fuck out and stop being nice to people who fuck up your shit over and over again. They don’t care about you and they never will.

that’s a really nice improvement. it really feels like you’re more in the place, but the monochrome gives it such a dreamlike feeling. very cool

Yes, I completely understand. It is frankly a lot of work on your part and sometimes it's just too much, especially when you're not sure you're going to get what you need to heal the situation.
I highly recommend these two books to you if you haven't read them. I think if you ever find yourself heading in a direction like this again, I believe they could help you, even more likely to help others around you.
- "Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life" by Marshall Rosenberg.
- "Conflict Is Not Abuse" by Sarah Shulman
I hope you will find some peace one way or another and soon. Take care on your way.

Yes, I have made this mistake multiple times and I probably will still keep making it because I'm an idealist and try to live my values. It seems to get me down a lot though T_T.
> none of them stood up for me. Even when I'd stood up for them in the past.
If this happened to me, I'd have a personal, real-time conversation with folks, do the NVC thing, and ask for that which you need without passing judgement or diagnosing them. If you still care to persist in that need, anyway.
I was just talking with my partner about why 'community' is so hard these days, why it has maybe always been hard, we talk about it nearly every day. It seems so complex that I find it hard to grasp any one concrete thing to exercise to make things better for people. It feels like it always comes back around to caring about people on an individual level, and being okay with that level of intimacy, attention, and commitment/obligation, or even just putting in the effort to try to like someone.
I'm afraid that some people just don't have that skill, and/or something else altogether merely loosely binds them, and it makes me sad.
I dunno...

Hi I saw this post and it resonated with me based on some prior experiences at work. I hope I can offer some comfort below by sharing my own.
Ask yourself, what do you need? What would make you happy? What would fix all of this? If you can make a list, then you can ask people directly for the things that you need, 1-1, face to face if possible, and see what they say. This has been immensely helpful to me.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonviolent_Communication#Components
Apart from that, if you just need the world to see what you have seen, and you don't really trust that you can solve this with interpersonal relationships, may I humbly suggest, and I'm not joking at all when I say this, a 90-minute YouTube video to get it all out of your head. Maybe you don't even post it.
> It just feels like The Work is too important and I don't matter in the grand scheme of things, the wheels of the machine must keep spinning. But if I don't matter, does anyone else?
I think about this constantly. I don't believe in impersonal work. I think it's a terrible, awful lie that serves as an excuse to dismiss those from whom we extract value and nothing more. You should matter. That said, I've never been a part of a community that truly took care of me. It has only ever been individuals. Seek out and strengthen those alliances. See above.
All the best this year and thank you for your care and hard work.

Oh my, sweet, sweet memories. I never knew this system by name. I can still remember the complex Wyse keyboards and that slow, slow baud rate. Oh, and the epic screen burn-in.
