naw not just you the value provided by social media doesn’t seem high enough to justify the inconveniences of decentralization. i can only think of two decentralized tech systems that were actually better for their decentralization… torrents and bitcoin
there was a time when torrents were consistently faster than most centralized download options and still is sometimes (not as much anymore as cloud cdns and edge networks have helped speed up centralized large file sharing to match or exceed the speed that most users have with torrents).
final settlement with bitcoin after say 10 confirmations is still wayyy faster / cheaper than final international settlement of base money. like the time to send USD from your bank in Chicago to your bank in Rome and actually be able to spend that value … it takes a while to line up the relationships and even though the wire domestically can be sent and the swift internationally can be sent at the speed of light it takes 72 hours on a good week for the banks to actually finish processing things and settling the debit / credit actions that allow the bank to make the value available to you.
so there’s still a use case for torrents and bitcoin but i really don’t see if for decentralized social media. 90% of what is shared on social media can be ignored and people are generally better off for it.
is it really an improvement on mailing lists?
idk. people love centralized social media because of the centralization. it feels like the whole world is watching when you post and that you’re connected to the Zeitgeist when you scroll and see that 150k people liked this or 2m people watched that… most people get better impressions at their local pub than on nostr… so it’s not really good for that kind of global hive mind experience… and if it is just for niche communities … those are better served by niche centralized web servers and forums and mailing lists … why the decentralized theatre when social media always trends toward a hub and spoke of creators and followers. fewer creators and more followers … the creators become the point of centralization but those creators if they want more followers and want to be known and discovered would be better served by centralized world aggregation systems where there’s a chance they can blow up to be seen by billions of people.
if they want to remain niche… then why not just run your own centralized site for your community? it’ll be faster and more efficient? more catered to your specific fan base and niche community?
but then the nostr advocates will say… but what if the centralized provider rugs you? wouldn’t it be better to take your content and identity elsewhere where? maybe idk would love to see examples where this use case would actually be useful. i’m speaking as someone who was banned 5 times on twitter for posting npc memes back when jack dorsey was still ceo of twitter. it was trivial to create a new account and immediate find the same network of shitposters. the level of effort matched the level of content quality.
i just don’t think many people think managing a private key and dealing with a kind of clunky and variant fractured set of communities is worth the effort just to see some, albeit funny , shitposts and some decent shares from the few high value contributors (who also mostly post the same content to x too so why bother if you’ve already got x set up) sure x could rug everyone but until that happens … why migrate? when x rugs everyone then migrate with everyone and you keep the community… which is the part you care about.
i like nostr. but at least the social experience nostr provides is not what most people want right now. nostr could be great if someone shipped something genuinely useful … not just another twitter, microblogging app… or another buggy half baked clone of another centralized service that is a million times better.
can the devs do something? where is the not shitty github replacement? even make a not shitty 4chan replacement (really such a low bar), where is the not shitty signal replacement? even on the micro blogging apps… what are people even saying on here that would get them banned on X? nothing of consequence or worth the trouble they’ve taken from what i’ve seen. excellent you’re pepe meme has been signed by your private key and distributed to 50 relays lol cool? you could have just sent it in a group chat to the same five friends who saw your nostr post.
maybe we’re just early and i should check back in a few more years…
nostr right now seems like a circle jerk of people who love the idea of nostr (myself included) and are awkwardly pretending like they actually like it. zaps for example. it’s super cool that i can zap randos slivers of bitcoins for their reposted memes and shitposts. but do i find that it’s worth it to set up another lightning server with a different lightning address for my alts so i don’t have to reuse my main lightning node.. no i don’t. so i don’t as my main lightning address to my alts and i zap from external wallets or even my main nwc wallet if i’m lazy.
yeah it’s super cool but i struggle to convince anyone else why they should do it too if they are just in it for the tech and the idea of it.
maybe nostr was all along just the friends we made along the way

blessed items are sold all the time by churches and churchmen. A blessed item may be sold but only for its intrinsic value, not the value of its blessing. it’s not simony to sell a wooden rosary that happens to be blessed for the cost of the wood and to fund a monastery etc. to sell it at a certain price because it was blessed would be simony.
i think the above takeaway isn’t sufficiently nuanced.

people who don’t mind ordering a personal taxi for their burritos lol. i think the subsidies have run out for this business model and now their trying to actually make money. there are only some foods that work well for delivery and they have reasonable defaults. a pizza shop that has a pizza delivery driver that is on call during x hours and delivers to these zip codes. that works. but having a fleet of randos delivering within hour long drive zones and chaining together different restaurants and food times … it’s crazy and seems like a really bad idea. 🤷‍♂️

the business moat is probably operational excellence and reputation in the nostr space—maybe first mover too. sure anyone can vibe up or clone clients but is anyone just vibing up quality relays ? i mean more than just running strfry and calling it a day. but maintaining uptime, data preservation guarantees, spam filtration and wot services, etc.? that seems harder to copy and there is reputation involved.
the moat is small though for sure… if anyone tries to charge too much their service will get copied by someone willing to take less. at some point quality starts to matter and people will pay… thinking specifically back to when reddit had a more open api and loads of clients existed…many of which charged a few bucks on the app store for the download.
i dogfood my own mostly vibed client just for fun and i recognize that it’s shitty here and there but i know the edge cases and will fix them when they cause me too much pain. right now i don’t really place a high value my ability to send a few shitposts or catch up on some of the bigger names’ takes on here. it’s fun to have but if i lost it nbd.
there are probably people out there who actually rely on influencing-adjacent talking head-esque income streams and for them being seen and having a reliable social media, streaming, long form publishing platform is way more valuable to them. so they’d probably pay a little more for a step up from the usual rough-edged vibed client and free relays.

It’s fine once you’re set up, have a contact list, some good relays connected etc. it’s pretty crappy starting out on the normie big relays not knowing how spammy they are and not having a good contact list.
But sometimes replies don’t load. Sometimes reposts aren’t found etc. turning on outbox mode these days pretty much guarantees a slower and less pleasant experience.
I don’t know if the microblogging use case was a great first use case for nostr idk tho Here I am.

The donald and wallstreet bets were the two holdouts against the complete soyification of Reddit but the donald went out in a blaze of glory getting banned and then after starting their own Reddit clone called the Donald.win they all got absolutely rekt by the Capitol Hill psyop and their site was shutdown. that was the end of that.
Wallstreet bets held out a bit longer but then it went too mainstream and got filled with the normie soy slop and instead of fun and interesting autistic deep dives it just became rich people posting huge losses and the same gay bear memes.
There are still niches that are useful around consoooomer good stuff and hobbies that require niche equipment—I’m partial to the mechanical keyboard space. It’s just the biggest community of people talking about building keyboards.
Would be nice to free some of those communities from the corp Reddit antiuser shift and get them on nostr. But most people don’t mind being the product *shrug*

The problem is you start adding all those things to make it a better experience and you end up with an incredibly complicated decentralized theatre protocol like bluesky.
It really does seems like the level of inconvenience/suck correlates directly with the level of freedom/decentralization.
Primal has the most user friendly nostr app experience but they have to do the heavy lifting on their caching server for you…effectively making a centralized window that aggregates the decentralized protocol’s hot spots and popular areas. It can’t continue this way as it doesn’t provide a better user experience than twitter, TikTok, instagram etc. according to the users that like those platforms … and it also is being effectively used in a centralized manner by many of the flagship clients that mostly imitate twitter.
The only thing that is really great is not getting banned — but only a small set of people have experienced getting banned on the major platforms and can appreciate it. Even now fewer and fewer people are getting banned on the major socials nowadays since zuck got buff and Elon took over X.
I lied there is another thing that is great about nostr. That it’s very easy to develop on. That’s great. I literally just spun up and am dog feeding my own client for everything I post here. I’m sure many others are doing the same.
Okay also how there are ads and stuff too and my data isn’t being harvested. That’s cool too. So another thing.
But how many people appreciate these things. Most people just want to go where their community is. Where their friends are. Where eyeballs are if they are selling/influencing.
When a decent Reddit tier nostr application is built that has robust communities and up and downvote to filter signal… I think that’d be a game changer. So many people rely on Reddit and it is still one of the worst socials banning wise and culture wise.

lol yes. I think you and so many people had similar experiences—I did too. I want to support them and like it but it’s just not good.
Idk if the quality actually took a nose dive in the last 20 years or my standards just got higher since I’m not a teenager anymore. I remember a time when there were steak and shakes on every other corner with table service and decent burgers. That changed at some point in the last 20 years lol. Now there are just a handful in my city in not so great areas that serve meh quality food. Reorging supply chains takes a lot more time than a new marketing campaign though. Hopefully they come through on their promises.
Paying with lighting is cool though. I think the square terminal update is actually going to make a difference for me as I know actually good stores/coffeeshops/restaurants that use square. But still not as much as there used to be. A lot of the square copy cat companies have taken a large market share in my city in that tier of local food service / handmade food stuff.

What machines are you using? My 10 year old i7 with 16gb of ram thinkpad still opens chromium on arch in milliseconds and the browsing experience is not that different from my 24 core m4 pro MacBook for the typical web stuff.
My 5 year old i5 8gb ram thinkpad on the other hand is painfully slow.

Appreciate it—just had a listen and those guys just say it and don’t reference any source. It’s a plausible connection for sure but I don’t exactly trust them very much. The podcast hosts radiate soy-energy and communicate any useful info in a haughty and condescending manner. If you run a music sharing website and allow uploads and downloads of audio files and someone tricks your application into accepting images by making them appear as if they were audio files—that seems very different to me from say a site that just allows any file under a certain limit to be uploaded and stored.
In both cases the images are received by the server and stored in the database (so you’re correct to say there is no difference in that sense) but the principle is very different. In the former case it is clear that the user is violating the website’s terms of service and engaging in deception to accomplish the goal with zero support from the webserver. In the latter case the website is signaling that this uploading images is an acceptable use.

I haven’t heard the connection between knots and that story—what podcast did you hear it on?
No translation I’ve read uses the term knots though. Usually in English translation it is cords or lashes.
The people doing ‘bad things’ were money changers who were giving bad rates on currency exchange and abusing pilgrims with their control of the local money.
It’s be a cool connection to draw for sure with bitcoin because in many ways it is a corrective to the abuses of money changers.

Yeah Damus is good but it has one thing that really annoys me—when I am like 4 layers deep into a thread then swipe back… I expect to see the last focused view of the thread but it takes me back to the feed and loses my spot. Maybe some people like that but I always accidentally do it and then am frustrated that I lost my place in the thread. Primal in my experience preserves the UX that I’m used to from twitter.
But has anyone made a successful hackernews/reddit style thread view? That’s the best way to view threads imho.

I used to think shadcn was really cool but I’ve seen it used in so many shitty vibed apps that now when I see a shadcn site with a standard splash page with gradients etc. I pretty much assume that the site is gonna be half baked. I start to look for unique stying because at least if the user who was vibing vibed hard enough to break out of the generic styles that AI prefers (which takes a bit of effort) I know the viber put in a little bit more care into their app than the drive by proooompter and it’s worth a little more consideration.

Is it a competition worth winning though? European work life balance seems nicer in a lot of ways than the American hyper competitive start-up cut through grind culture. I don’t really want to grind to boost gdp. I want to work enough to have a nice community and place to raise kids. I’d happily be 3rd in iq or math competitions if it meant that I got to live in a safe homogenous culture with tradition and culture vs being in heterogeneous fiat mining town outpost of burger punk highways, strip malls and parking lots with a bunch of overworking new-rich american who try to buy culture and status—and who unfortunately grant status and praise to those with nothing but wealth.

So after digg, people migrated to Reddit, but where did people go after Reddit went user hostile? I remember there was an attempt at moving to voat but it never got traction in the same way that Reddit initially did. The early 2010s Reddit was so much better than Reddit today.

Not the OP but I used grok code fast extensively when it was free on cursor for a few weeks. It was very fast but also stupid. It was great at implementing plans that had been laid out in great detail in which the area for operation was demarcated clearly. It didn’t do a great job at answering open ended questions about the code base or problem solving and I found that it didn’t often perform any better than using auto on cursor. So idk why I’d pay more specifically for it if I’m already paying for auto.

Mainstream people don’t typically seek out mainstream content on niche platforms. It’s gonna take a niche attraction to bring people over. Like the Facebook group or marketplace effect. People join Facebook because their neighborhood gardening group is there. This is what nostr could do really well.

Core used to be like that and even the knots apologists like Bitcoin Mechanic say they want to just submit a pr to core and have a good relationship where these ideas can be discussed and worked out. Knots is just the fallback escape hatch. I think core should prioritize working with a large section of devs and should try not to give the middle finger to the more prominent devs with big followings lol

Yup which is why knots is pretty much perfect for this use case since it is basically core and has been maintained right alongside it for the majority of core’s existence yet @npub1qny…95gx is frustrated by knots for some reason… so I was wondering if he’d consider using something like btcd… but I don’t think he would for the reasons you mentioned.

For sure. I remember a while back Jack used to have an @cashapp or block domain nip-5 and it made it easy to tell which Jack was the real one along with the guys who worked at cashapp
/block/square etc. on nostr.
The checkmark was useful because there were lots of other accounts at the time that would list the same nip-5 in their metadata but it wouldn’t show the check in most clients because their pubkey wasn’t in the domain’s well-known.
Now Jack doesn’t have a nip-5 anymore so you just have to tell by followers and previous posts now.
But yeah I never understood the get a nip-5 at randoNostrappDomain.com services… as if that meant something.

Ahh gotcha. I wasn’t thinking of those general providers that let anyone pay and then give the name. I don’t trust those at all because anyone can just make a famousName@generalProvider and get the check. The domain is what matters to me not the name. I was thinking more of the situation where I own my domain so I list my public key there so people know which pub key my domain has blessed. But I don’t bother with any of that when I’m posting from one of my many alts like this one.

It’s really useful still for the reason you outlined. I see a domain I trust so I know the npub associated with it is trustworthy. When searching for accounts it is the only thing that I can use to tell me which accounts are real and which are imposter accounts if I don’t already have a web of trust. Either you do that or you have to have them tweet out their npub like some users did. Or just give you a npub irl or via a direct message on another trusted platform. Domains are everywhere and until there is a better way of doing this. I think the check marks should remain.

Inflation isn’t always usury. If a city uses gold coins. And I happen to dig up a lot of gold from the earth then travel to that city, will inflate the supply of gold and decrease its purchasing power there. This is inflation but not usury. The current practice of money supply via banks issuing loans is most definitely usury because they issue debt that they require people pay back but for which the assume no risk since they simply lended money they didn’t have.

Is there a list of the main signers out there and the main ways of signing in now. I feel like a nostr boomer because I haven’t kept up with. I’m still using nsec and nip7 extensions. It’s fine it works. But I hear all this talk about bunker and signers and stuff …where they at and is there a clear benefit to using them over a simple browser extension? I don’t want to have to run a server or do complicated stuff when a browser extension works really well.
