Last Notes npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Right people, *someone* be excited with me please - in bittersweet news I inherited my bestie's C64 but the three friends (same age) I've tried to enthuse so far said they never had one and one even had to google what it was π± Liam had it working so I will try my darnedest to get it set up and play a SIXTEEN COLOUR game of Danger Mouse π€©π₯Ί https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/117/240/419/617/476/297/original/e9ee85ba8083bb58.jpg https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/117/240/420/083/024/088/original/741a0d8a5fc2c0d0.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) yes I won some mixed seeds packets and tried four other annual flowers but none made it. Hardy is my go-to requirement π perennial great generally but happy to try an annual or two each year just to try something new π I'm learning so much from the experience of all the new things! π npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) thank you both π So much good advice to take on. I will get planning and try to incorporate all this. Not yet grown parsnips either but here's another motivation! npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Although actually maybe I should make one a flower bed in the #allotment ? I've had no luck growing flowers but really want to attract more pollinators (and fly-eaters π). Should I get some bulbs to see if I have more luck there? Failed previously with nasturtiums, sweet peas, and others I've forgotten but could try again with the hardiest I guess... Recommendations? npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) I'm feeling more capable! Composted my calabrese as it was infested with whitefly and then they cut down a tree in the #allotment so I grabbed my stashed cardboard and old planks and bricks and prepped two new beds for next year, will add compost later but hope this is a good foundation. Never been ready to go before but I'm getting the hang of it! This ex-blueberry zone will get a new lease of life somehow π Might be for butternut squash and the chard seems happy in that area... https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/117/143/873/909/595/376/original/8f15455fa948bbc3.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Bought a wrecking bar (crowbar) for Β£7.89 Friday and I have had WAY more than Β£7.89 worth of fun with it this weekend! Yes it's true that pallets are a nightmare to disassemble but it's possible with this magical bar (aren't levers the best thing in physics?!), and so satisfying...more work to do but daring to dream of converting my pallet compost bin into an #allotment raised bed... Cream crackered now though, time to not move for a while π npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Would #Mosstodon be interested in seeing this gorgeous little moss ball that lives on my patio? It is so cute I vow not to clean the patio every again π
win-win https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/116/319/395/729/996/084/original/bccfea0b7128821e.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Ooh there's a ton of these mushrooms (I assume!? Doubting myself now π) in one of my raised beds at the #allotment ! Probably will leave them be? Hope this means happy soil (albeit wet!), ready for beetroot seeds to be imminently sown...π€π» (Hm brief web search returned gardening site saying "the discovery of mushrooms may prompt feelings of unease" - noooo, people, get excited by them! π€©) https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/116/210/088/746/757/273/original/e582bdcb7e76c12f.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Ooh it's my three year anniversary of being adopted today! My housemate arrived as my tenth foster cat but chose to stay. We've never looked back π₯° No party for us as we're quiet old souls, so celebrations involve lying on the floor giving each other head boops, snuggling on the sofa with a fuzzy blanket, and me ordering some stupidly expensive catnip mice toys because it has to be the strong stuff or she doesn't react #CatsOfMastodon https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/115/576/596/892/635/874/original/3e9a4f7db8c876cb.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Tips please! It's only #allotment year 2 and my first success with leeks which I entirely forgot to start harvesting until today π Any suggestions for good uses of the hard green leaves other than compost or boil into submission? https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/115/314/747/989/014/109/original/9e1a1edb18baa061.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Just learnt to interpret the annual #allotment "we're cutting the hedges, clear stuff if you have an edge plot" email as "there may be chippings available" (they never tell us outright). Boy did I work hard this am! Removed weed membrane, emptied compost bin, added 11 sacks of chippings, mixed and spread, and really hope that this sad floody zone becomes a healthier spot to give a friend's jostaberry cutting a real chance soon π€π» The satisfaction of hard outdoor work is amazing π https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/115/201/730/733/708/819/original/2c8a1f08c795fc21.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) This weekend I celebrate my two-year #allotment anniversary! Having sort of got it by accident I've been truly converted to the joy of it π And am celebrating with ever more questions (it's good for the brain as well as the body and soul!)... One young blackcurrant is already flopping under the weight of its delicious fruit... should I be supporting it? I thought it was unnecessary for currant bushes... https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/114/601/577/561/461/783/original/8fd1387128be8c0c.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) And look! Freecycle is the best, yesterday I saved 18 slabs to create the last path I need down the blueberry side of the #allotment. Now to move the bricks (also salvaged, perfect for holding netting down) and shuffle the slabs in a bit according to my precise measured plan π
Reuse gives such a warm fuzzy feeling βΊοΈ https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/114/324/005/746/427/903/original/b95eb62eeafd45ab.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) One of many #allotment tasks though was attempting to blanche and freeze some of my glut of chard. The blanching is fine but really, how do you *dry* chopped leaves before freezing them?! Too much faff, think I'll have to continue cooking it into stews to freeze, unless other tips...? npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Treated myself to a recycled raised bed as my open garlic bed was unsuccessful and just compost on card shallow and messy. I tried π€·π». Although the point of no-dig is not to upset the soil, I figured the more I clear it before cardboarding/filling, the less/slower stuff will grow into it? Is this good enough or do I need another session's labour? #allotment https://media.mstdn.social/media_attachments/files/112/977/587/410/858/014/original/8afbf81890499857.jpg npub1j9ujuh0jppf692p0l4mpun52kg97lezvl7cwt4yxml4nyq7ma43s26m2ta Gina (she/they) Oh my! I thought my cucumber plant was dead, judging by the visible fruit which are all deformed and dry. Just peeked under other leaves and whoooa I've got two 6+" cucumbers to enjoy! Sneaky beggars. (This isn't the allotment. Sadly some things I can only grow in pots in the garden, as it seems slugs will not cross the fake grass, no matter how great the reward would be. But I'm balancing the plastic with wilderness at the allotment)
