My father has died. He passed away recently after a prolonged battle with bowel cancer.
2 years ago upon finding out his prognosis I did something radical. I stopped working as an IT project manager, packed up the family, bought a 7.5t lorry #MegaVan and relocated to ensure whatever time he had left was as comfortable as possible and as his full-time carer ensure wherever was needed to be done was.
He was such a stoic figure, not showing much emotion except laughter and pride in the family, his legacy.
I learnt so much about the man he was before being a father, what inspired him, his passions and what drove him and why he made lifelong sacrifices the way he did.
Whilst I was driving him home from Chemo he thanked me and I replied, I hadn't enough time to be able to repay him for all he had done for me.
He cried, shuddering in sobs.
He quickly wiped his face and hid his emotions.
Later that night he sobbed again "I don't want to go..." he said.
I changed his diet, provided gentle exercise and kept his medications coming. He managed to get to his granddaughters wedding, see 1 last Christmas with everyone and defy the Doctors prognosis, defiantly fighting every step until he was ready to leave on his terms. He had his last meal of mashed potato & cheese, and lashings of gravy (apparently I was the only one person who could do it right!), went to bed slept for 36hrs straight, he chose to stop his medications, and came down stairs for the last time.
24hrs later, he passed peacefully listening to the sounds of the 50's & 60's, surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
I'll never forget your kindness and love.

#MegaVan Update : 35
Sturdy, Safe and Solid!
Built from disgarded shipping pallets, 1000x screws and slats that were originally from the insider of the #MegaVan when she was a Furniture Village transport lorry, the steps are a welcome addition to out plot. It's makes for easy access to and from the living space and so far no one has taken a swan dive out the door!
Adding a few ornamental lavender shrubs outside has already attracted bumble bees who are greedily feasting 🐝🍯
I've had so many requests to build something similar for others, I might set up a sideline 🤔
But1st, back to the bathroom!

#MegaVan Update : 34
12v Electrics and a death dive!
It's been a busy few weeks, the shower cubicle is coming on nicely, panels are cut to size but it's on-hold whilst I make sure the plumbing fixtures are in the rights positions. So, in the meantime I popped the bathroom ceiling in!
Those last panels were tricky and many a expletive were expressed!
😩😡🤬
The bathroom fan and 12v switch was positioned, which is all fed off the toilet fan power and its also linked to the switch controlling a over door outside lights!
So....one dark evening Wife stepped to the #MegaVan to switch on the light and went to step back outside and promptly rocked and fell off the steps!!!
😲😲😲
From inside, I saw her slowly slipping down but was powerless to reach out and catch her! 😬😩
It was about 1m down to the ground but she fell onto the steps and bruised her shin and ankle. She was very lucky as It could have been so much worse!
So all works have focused on building sturdy steps to ensure we can get in and out and not chancing another swan dive to the floor again.
4 pallets and a lot of cladding, voilà steps ! Cost £6.50 for 2 packs of screws.
SAFETY hand rail still to be fitted and another little step for the shorter ones of the family. 😊

A Mega-update!
You'd be mistaken into thinking a long absence means nothing has been happening... But noooo!
Let's call it off!
1. Worktop & sink secured & in final position
2. Larder initially built (tbc)
3. Underslung Waste tank installed
4. Bathroom wall erected (😜)
5. Shower waste set & connected
6. Toilet set & connected
7. Vanity waste connected
8. Lounge/bedroom ceiling installation begins...
9. Sprung a leak from the ceiling too!
It's been a busy few weeks and only 1 injury to speak of... I got my arm stuck inside the underslung waste box!! 🙄
Was a bit panicky as I was home-alone & under the #MegaVan, my arm went in, up past the elbow but could I get it out?!?
My only thought was "Ah fuck! This is how they'll find me - how embarrassing!"
Luckily with a little wrangling and bruising - I got my arm free!
Next, finish all the jobs I've started!

Whilst in an Australia water park, bought a slushy to cool down, took a hard slurp as I thought it would be hard ice, like in the UK but it was melted and it rushed down to my stomach, chilling my blood giving me a massive chest spasm and headache! I collapsed on a bench clutching my head and chest...it was the most excruciating pain I've ever experienced,
And I've eaten salt and vinegar crisps with a cut finger and had that near-death man-flu !!!

Mega-update for the #MegaVan!
"I'm in sooo much hot water!"
Yes! Finally after months of preparation and heartache, we now have hot running water!
List of stuff that led up to this...
12v & 240v Electrics installed and tested to the Truma combi heater.
Mains Water plumbing AND tank installed, configured for on & off grid sources.
Kitchen Sink taps & waste connected and tested. (only 1 small 😭 leak!)
... And cutting another hole through the wall for the heater exhaust.
Also every pipe joint has been tested and clipped to ensure they don't pop off when we eventually travel.
And we have sumptuous foam for the benches and it now transforms into a king size bed!! 😃😃😃
Next, ceiling & bathroom structure! 🤔

#MegaVan Update : 31
How much can you Bench?
Me? 2!
After building the frames and setting out to ensure they'll fit opposite each other comfortably, I started screwing together and building the bench seats, which will also miraculously turn into a spacious double bed.
Now, whilst I'd built them to cover both heater, water tank and electrics, I didn't originally think a bed would work as well... But guess what, the numbers aligned and I had a moment of inspiration during a dream when I was at a castle gate and they let down a drawbridge but it was too short, so another smaller bridge came out to meet it!
Anyway, that gave me the idea of arms that pivot out from under the seats to form a bed platform!
Now I just had to fit it all together...
Another week another injury, this time left hand index finger got a drilling! And boy, it took forever to stop bleeding. Even after an hour it was soaking through my gloves and sticking on the wood!
Talk about giving your all, blood, sweat and tears! 👉😢

"Be my guest and Take a seat!"
Having installed the70L clean water tank, screwed it to a board and plumbed in and left it to set overnight, i realised i'd forgotten to install the level sensor! 🤦
Luckily I managed to retrofit and reset it into position... Only to realise I'd cut the sensor bars incorrect and I needed to cut the longest prong shorter!! 🤦🤦🤦😭
So contorted to the max and effing & jeffing, I struggled to tin snip and clip the offending prong without disturbing the seal and silicone gel (too much)
I also placed the #Turma heater to its final position ready for air ducting and installation of water pipes and lpg when available.
All in all, a very productive week!
No injuries this week...🙏

Let there be carnage!
So... Having engaged a company to build a on-off grid solution capable of allowing the Wife to cook, bake and provide delicious meals from scratch, and about £4000 later, we have a whole load of boxes, cables and reams of instructions to consume to ensure we know what goes where, when the time comes.
Luckily I've enlisted someone who is qualified and understands electrics more than I do. Although I did spot a few issues and held an intense conversation, debating the reason for a specific fuse rating with the design engineer!
And I was right!!!
It's exciting stuff and can't wait for commissioning to start and we can really get 12v stuff working like the fridge, water pump, extractor and Truma heater!
Also the 24v cob lighting.
Its all go but still....so much to do!

For those at the bitter end and thinking there is no escape, believe me, I was there in 2008, laden with over £60k in credit cards/loans debts, 3 properties and mortgaged to the hilt! Lost my income, banks closed business and personal accounts but it IS possible to claw back. Forget IVA or the citizens advice bureau, I managed to beat the system and force the DCA (debt collectors) to bugger off and leave me in peace asking for proof and evidence.
later I understood the system but it is captured better in the book "The Title is Unimportant" which can also restore your credit rating (aka Slave Score) - I just waited 6 years and all debts became unenforceable.
Do not dispair, Debt collectors work on fear and fraud to intimate and crush you. Be strong, learn from others and know there is an escape plan out of debt and back into the light. 💜

I lied! Plumbing was NOT next...
I managed to get the kitchen cleared and put more holes in for the sink taps and electric pop-up!
Didn't hit my head and only once slightly injured my fingers holding the chuck and accidently spinning the drill !!! nicking the skin but it'll heal in a few days 🙄
Carted the work surface back in and it looks the real deal!
What do you guys think? You'd never know I've never done anything like this before!!!

In Recovery...
Don't have a headache anymore and getting back to normal after #2024HeadBanging!
Word of warning, take ANY head impact seriously as the brain is a sensitivity pudding of an organ, prone to bruising and concussion is no joke!
Spent the morning planning for cutting holes in the vanity unit surface and reshaping to make it fit so the overhang matches the kitchen 😉
As they say 'Measure twice, cut once.' and as there's no spare worksurface, it won't be pretty I get it wrong!!! 😬
Luckily, (and with a little skill might I add) it all went well.
Tap fitting went smoothly and it looks the real deal! Something to be proud off.
I'm a little bit of a horder and the cupboard handles are about 10 years old but I knew they'd eventually come in handy! #ToldYaSo

It's been a trying time. Since cracking my head on the tailgate of my Wife's car, I've had to take it easy and not do much on the #MegaVan. It's very likely that I gave myself a mild concussion and it's effected me more than I'd like to think!
In my youth I probably would have shrugged this off and cracked on, not missing a beat but nowadays I'm slower, tired and often unsteady.
Every day I'm getting better but it's a stark reminder that I'm no spring chicken!! If anyone knows of a casual smart looking everyday hardhat, I'd like to know! 😜
The only shining light had been watching the #btc charts and reading about the potential adoption in global finance & government sector! It's all very promising. I hope you've prepared appropriately.

We have something resembleing a Kitchen! (aka Galley)
After warning neighbours that I'd be cutting outside and after another quick measure, more like 3 and 30 minutes of anxious pacing.
I finally drilled corner points and joined cuts to make the sinkhole!
(apparently I say 'Sinkhole' in a rude way, if anyone can explain to me how else I can say it, more than welcome to learn... 🤔 Sink'ole,
Sink Whole, Sink-Hellooole !)
The worktop is lighter as I'd cut the excess for the vanity unit off. So easily placed it in its final resting place and as we were having guests round quickly popped the doors on! (plastic wrapped still) but looking good!

#MegaVan update: 23
Kitchen! (aka Galley)
Taking shape by assembling, fitting and bolting units together. The worktop is in place and a test cut was made. The excess happens to fit the bathroom vanity unit so there's a stroke of luck!
The worktop is a compact paper & resin12mm laminate and measuring 2.4m long!
Not too heavy but very clean and stylish which is very pleasurable to the Misses apparently.
I've never fitted a kitchen before and it's a very steep learning curve. Working out the cutting and edges is fun, not! 😭
Marked out the sink hole and will attempt it tomorrow as I don't want to rush it and will probably measure it all again for the uptinth time before putting anything sharp against it! 😬
Once the sink is in I can focus on the Tap and waste connections.

Well that didn't work out...
I'd loaded the #MegaVan with ample weight to simulate it finished and took it to a weighstation.
My God, she's heavy! 😳
Taking into account there's still a few things to go in her (oo er madam) till she's finished, she hefty, very nearly at safe limits tbh. Hence the decision NOT to fit the taillift... Sad I know, but as Duncan, our commercial fitter said "She'll handle like a bathtub on ice if you do!"
I've always known she's got a big ass and likes to swing it on corners but I don't want anything to exasperated it!
I've caused enough damage already. Let's not mention #FirstGateGate. (more on that another time... )
Any hoo - Came back a little bit deflated but the guys sure know how to look after me & the #MegaVan. They'd serviced it and gave her a thorough examination and fixed a few niggles for good measure so not a completely wasted journey.
So back to the grindstone, focus on under kitchen plumbing and getting units in.

#MegaVan update: 21
Quick reminder there will only ever be #21million #btc! There's a difference between scarce and finite.
Yesterday we got up very early and travelled to our commercial outfitters in Cornwall, ready from the taillift (Wife's Gin Terrace!) to be fitted.
There's lots of controversy about adding more weight and complexity to the #MegaVan but we envisage have it on it own land at some point and having a raised outside platform will definitely be an add bonus to watch sunsets etc.
So we're back in Cornwall once again and over the next few days I'm planning on doing some difficult jobs on the #MegaVan like fitting the clean & waste tanks.
On a different note. I hadn't driven the #MegaVan for over a month and my god, I felt it in the calves and they were cramping badly. Note: Use the whole leg on the peddles not just the ball of the foot! 👍

The #MegaVan is coming on well. Not only do we have 1 working secret trolly drawer but the Woowoo loo was delivered today.
It will be a few days until I get the holes and pipes connected. (Black waste tank still to be underslung)
Kitchen on order and vanity unit & bowl arriving Thursday.
Today I lifted the galley floor connecting hot, cold & waste pipes into final positions.
All very exciting.
Renogy still haven't refunded my money on their completely failed order but I have found a good supplier of Victron equipment to build my solution going forward. 🤑

#MegaVan Update: 20
We're all sick!
One downside of living in close proximity to your family, if 1 of you get colds/flu, you all do... Eventually. 🤧😩
Obviously as a male I'm feeling it so much more than the Misses and daughter I can tell you!
#ManFlu is a serious condition.
But, I'm putting on a brave face and made everyone Tea & passed the biscuits about a bit earlier.
Keeping the #MegaVan warm is a priority so the windows have been batterned down and lecy heater on full to drive out the sickness from us all.
Here's Hoping we all feeling better Tomorrow.

#MegaVan Update: 19
It's been a trying few days but I've built a Bathroom platform and focused on the 230v EHU upgrade.
The extention to the raised platform will add extra storage drawers for the separate bedroom.
Electrics have been a steep learning curve for me but I got it sorted and was advised by a qualified electrician too. (good job really)
So ow I've got separate circuits to different parts of the #MegaVan.
Next I can look at getting the kitchen, bathroom, water inlets & waste installed.

"I BUILT A THING!" 😂
So at the cab end of the #MegaVan I've bought loads of wood and built an Adult bunk bed which is surprisingly secure and stable!
The lats are in fact the recycled side braces I originally took off the sides when it was a removals lorry.
I tested it by swinging from it and also climbed up and layed down. So if it can take the weight of a 16 stone man, my daughter won't bring it down.
IKEA furniture doubles up as steps and slotted in with precision, like it was measured for it! 😂🤣😂
