The principle of discrimination was an essential component to just war theory in western civilization and remains so in Islam, especially among the Shi'ites who are extremely conservative in defining legitimate warfare. It's not intrinsic to warfare as such to deliberately ignore or inverse the distinction between combatants and non-combatants. The US deliberately targets civilians, the other side does not. I like the American soldiers I know and agree with them on a great deal, they are my countrymen, and I pray for their well-being, but they also seem to practice elaborate mental gymnastics to maintain a working relationship with a command structure whose values are radically antithetical to their own interests as well as the safety and security of the Republic at large

Around 2018 I was in between rentals in Austin Texas looking for a place to live and ended up interviewing at a housing co-op populated by young green types and over dinner I made a brief remark about evolution being fake and racist. All present tolerated this and a few enthusiastically agreed.
I don't think that would have gone over so well had I remarked the same in similar company just 10 years prior. Something had recently transpired wherein the dogma of evolution had lost its special status as absolute and sacrosanct.
One of the luminaries of the Traditional school noted several decades ago that evolutionism is the pseudo-metaphysical foundation of modern society without which the latter would completely disintegrate, and in Western countries I suspect we are witnessing that play out in a real time

Truly, RFK has earned a lot of criticism but to call him "anti-vax" is a sign of the worst kind of brain worms. If I am concerned about the safety of a particular pill, am I "anti-pill" ? Yes, according to state media and PR companies who love branding this as the right-wing position. The result is that the very small percentages of leftists or left-leaning people dull and gullible enough to fall for it is just large enough to shut down all progress and dialogue among the scattered remnants of polite society.
