I recently got a new system on my work laptop and decided to give #GNOME on #Fedora a try after 20 years on #Xfce (I started with #Xubuntu 6.x). Oh man, so many new cool things, but old habits die hard.
There is no middle click on link to open it from terminal 😱 https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Design/whiteboards/-/work_items/401
Also, no drop down terminal out off the box, using https://github.com/ddterm/gnome-shell-extension-ddterm but it looks different than other terminal windows.
Not sure I can get by with the Text editor or Builder, staying on #Geany so far.

I had this conversation recently with a #Fedora friend (paraphrased):
me: "I hope this won't cost me my career."
them: "Our careers are already over anyway."
I've been working on #Python in #Fedora for close to 14 years now. And I really wonder if I can manage for another ~30. The industry seems to go downhill really fast, and while we maybe can all pretend for another decade, I sometimes doubt this will last much longer. Should I learn a craft?

2026-08-14 22:41:32 GMT

At Czech #Python community sprint, we are discussing a wild idea of a Python (un)conference in a #train. 3 days, roaming Czechia, talks, workshops, sleep carriages, restaurant, full train experience. PyVlakon.
Probably not viable, but super nerdy anyway.

There I was, contemplating moving my stuff to #Codeberg, worrying about missing support for trusted publishing to PyPI.
I guess I won't :(

I wonder how they are going to measure "mostly consist of".
#FreeIPA is already moving away: https://forge.fedoraproject.org/forge/forge/issues/682

Thanks to @nprofile…gf5a, who dared to suggest we try it, we now have a small patch for #virtualenv in #Fedora to enable creation of #Python 3.6 virtual environments.
Hence, you can use #tox to test your code on Python 3.6 to 3.15, without the need for nasty hacks -- https://github.com/tox-dev/tox/issues/3656
Supporting testing on 3.6 is important to us, as many developers targeting #RHEL 8 still need to support it. (Python 3.6 is the new Python 2.6.)
Anyway, test it out:

So I heard you like #SBOM, so I put SBOM into the #Python wheels in #Fedora RPMs, so when you unwheel the wheels, you get the SBOM.
If your Python virtual environment was created on Fedora, your #security scanner can recognize #CVE fixes in patched pip (or setuptolos) within.
The question, however, is: What to do with this now :D

Anyway, security scanner people, please reach out.

I spent the last 3 to 4 months dealing with our not even 6 years old #IrishWolfhound's cancer. This is Fanynka, she would have been 6 years old today but she did not make it. I am exhausted and devastated, she was absolutely perfect. Please send cute puppies pics.

2025-08-12 18:32:35 GMT

#Fedora 43 is branching from Rawhide today. And we're gonna do a mass rebuild of all #Python packages with .pyc files in both Rawhide and Fedora 43 when Python 3.14.0rc2 is out.
I am really hoping this goes well. We have never done a rebuild this late :)

Suddenly, I am git committing everything as *Koji Builder* instead of me. Huh? What's going on?
It turns out that I ran RPM %prep for ~1000 #Fedora packages yesterday to extract their sources. One of them has:
git config --global user.email "[email protected]"
git config --global user.name "Koji Builder"
Surprise, surprise, running untrusted code on my machine is pretty dumb.
Who did this? We'll never know, it was committed 8y ago as *Koji Builder* themselves.

Looking at the laptop screen at night with no surrounding ambient light is uncomfortable.
I struggled with the 2 low settings of brightness: a blank display (0%) or lasers into my eyes (10%).
`brightnessctl set 1%` is good.
Now I've figured out that #Xfce can change the number of steps (from the default 10). Moreover, it supports exponential steps (more natural for the human eye).
With 27 exponential steps, the first 10 options are "almost 0%". Perfection!

I'm at a hospital. So probably no #FlockToFedora this year. I am so incredibly sad.

2025-06-04 15:41:48 GMT

My lower back hurts so much that I will likely miss #FlockToFedora (at least the first day). I went to doctor's today and got some shots to the back, but so far no real relief :(
I hope it'll get better soon, so I can arrive a bit later and see my #Fedora friends.
At least it's close, so I am flexible and can arrive (or leave) any day.

Everything seems ready for the actual mass #Python 3.14 rebuild in #Fedora Rawhide. We'll meet with @nprofile…nhpv and @nprofile…33f3 early next week to fire off and babysit the builds.
Fellow Fedora packagers: Now is not a good time to push breaking changes. (In the past, something special always happened during the rebuild.)

That's... unfortunate. I wonder what kind of talks were accepted for Flock this year.

Things I observe when teaching computer science students, I find weird:
- Many open new tabs in browser by right click+Open In New Tab (instead of middle click or ctrl+click).
- They use fancy IDE autocomplete tools but don't even use Tab in terminal to autocomplete long filenames, they type it key by key.
- Thy absolutely give up on meaningful commit messages.

Step 1: Get a cat.
Step 2: We don't need more cats.
???
Step X: Get a third cat.
His name is Monty, he's from a shelter, less than 1 year old. He's a half Maine Coon.
So far he seems really cool about his new home.

If everything goes well, #Fedora Linux 41 will never use a i686 builder to build a noarch package. https://pagure.io/koji/issue/3809
This has huge implications for the ability to drop i686 support in some Python packages with extension modules, such as pandas or scipy, in Fedora (following upstream).

When writing command line tools in Python, always assume people will need to use them from their own Python scripts. Don't force them call subprocess or use complex APIs. Please, provide a high-level CLI-like Python function and create the CLI by wrapping that in argparse/click/etc.
I wish I could just call fedpkg.build(), spectool.get("foo.spec"), or dnf.repoquery(whatrequires="bar", repo="rawhide") instead of copy-pasting boring wrappers from script to stript.

I've spent 3 days volunteering at the 🇨🇿 Czech :python: #Python community conference, #PyConCZ. I am exhausted, overwhelmed with emotions and I feel like it was a week. After 4 years of no Czech PyCon, this was the biggest one ever and I am not getting any younger. Doing this and meeting all the folks was very emotional and intense for me. The amount of praise we received in person from visiters is extraordinery. I'm still shiverring.
This event was phenomenal 💙 💛
