depends on the frequency. Anything less than once a minute, use a cron job or more likely the equivalent in your container platform. More than once a minute, if it’s simple enough you can spawn a background thread or task in your web server and service them there.

But relicensing is fairly rare. I would only be worried about it if the project had a substantial “open source data" or "open source AI" component as their licenses are still in way more flux. Patent handling is also kind of a solved problem in modern licenses like Apache 2 and GPL 3, so I wouldn't worry a ton there unless you expect the project to involve extreme cutting-edge tech where a contributor might not know about patents their employer is filing.

How much of a brain dump do you want? There's two main concerns that I am aware of which CLAs exist to address: copyright assignment and patent licensing. Copyright assignment only matters if you predict relicensing will be a factor in the future, since without that you have to track down every contributor and get their consent or deal with a project with a substantial amount of code under different licenses, both usually non-starters. 🧵

If it was less terribly implemented I can see some value, like “follow only very important things" is useful but the algorithms need to be non-shitty. Like there's lots of repos I don't want to follow but I would love a push if there's a ticket with >= 100 interacting users or a major version release :)

I also think it's fair to say that some of those distro promises are less strong than used to be, as the surface area has increased dramatically over time, what does it even mean for a distro to "support" random Python libraries? Libraries too small for an official security reporting process so good luck noticing when there's sec fixes to backport. Or increasingly subjective xkcd://1172 "bugs”. I salute you for fighting that fight, but I'm not sure it has a future anymore.

While I think it's very very fair to say that many users still want the promises that only the distro style can offer (stability, support, long term maintenance), I think it's also fair to say that it's decreasing over time, slowly being replaced by “run this container image" or similar which I will never claim is better, but it's definitely more direct :)

I don't think anyone is objecting to Rust as a reasonable technical choice for this kind of tooling. But we do have to realistic about it shrinking the potential future maintainers pool by a lot which is a downside to weigh against the benefits. And with paid contributors right now is kind of masks the downside in a way that many of us who have been on the receiving end of this cycle before find concerning.

And to reiterate what I said on PSF-Vote, even in some imaginary scenario where Bobby McPythonface who has been an amazing community member and PSF Fellow gets their Fellowship removed via Evil Board Members, nothing actually happens to them. The PSF does not control commit access to Python, having a Fellowship does not confer any material benefits, insert Mushu GIF "dishonor on you, dishonor on your cow”, that's it. So this vast PSF conspiracy would exist to ... throw shade. Good luck with that

This. It's ridiculous on its face to spin tales of "what if the board goes rogue”, and it’s more ridiculous the more you learn about the processes involved. You know what isn't ridiculous? Not having to parade traumatic experiences for an all-members vote. I _personally_ have seen CoC-violating conduct that went unreported because of fears about what would happen to the victim if the report somehow became public. Here’s my spicy take on Recall: I desperately wish this could be a good thing. It's not, to be clear, but I wish I lived in a world where it could be.
Having a tool which can be watching along in parallel with a million scraps of information I come across on a daily basis and help collate and organize those is legitimately a very useful thing, possibly even required as I get older (not to mention long covid brain fog worries).
