hosting the videos doesn't need to be centralized. providers like Nostr.build and other blossom services are great for that. I'm on the perspective that training and storing model weights / derivatives of data sources, including metadata is where big problem is. Whether it's data sources or derivatives, you make each (or whatever step you care) open and composable. Every org doesn't need to carry the full burden of hosting, training or analytics and can specialize on their own needs way more than any single vision coming from a monolithic yt replica.
@nprofile…lxer's done a lot of effort mapping this out, and we have an implementation where we collect notes -> process user and note metadata/tags and create semantic embeddings composed with a user configurable WoT (from a different data source) -> outputting a ranked list of users and notes for topic specific feeds.
imagine what we could do with image and video recommendations with metadata and embeddings, ranked by watch history and a user web of trust

Maybe local concensus is all that matters, build with the people you want to build with. If a group with a lot of influence comes in and flips every rule on nostr, but are interoperable with each other and have most of the users, there's really nothing anything anyone can do, refardless of we all think. Might be that exact reasoning for how protocols die - focusing on mandating things to not change with global rules
