However, I think it remains to be seen whether or not Nostr clients and relays can be profitable. I think it’ll be harder to be profitable without algorithms. But hopefully they will. My concern is that things are changing too fast for new institutions to help us. Building new institutions takes time and building trust in those institutions takes even longer. However, it is possible that in the age of instant communication an institution could go through that process much quicker. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress The corruption and decay of our institutions is tragic especially because, I believe, we are entering a time in history when our institutions will be more important than ever. And I fear too many of them are too far gone to be up to the challenge. It’s depressing, but I hold out hope that maybe enough people will realize this and try to turn them around. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Oof. Dislike. As far as flexibility, I’m not sure how flexible you want. They defiantly have a legit sole. I’ve not tried all their models, so they might vary. For any fan of data visualizations I highly recommend it. https://www.chartr.co/ npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress A friend asked me on Facebook for ideas to help her five year old daughter get more interested in math and develop number sense. I typed up this response and thought I’d share it here in case anyone with younger kids is interested. — Games with numbers are great. We used to play war with just the cards ace through ten. I loved it because they could count the objects on the cards. Then you can modify that game when they’re ready for more advanced games. Like you could play two cards at a time and then the sum of the two cards is your hand. This gets them to add on each hand (I always had my kids “help” me add my hand as well. Then you count up the cards to see who wins. You can also do the same approach (two cards at time) but make it subtraction. We played a silly game called “dice chips” which was named that because we use dice and poker chips. We did different variations, but the simplest was you each start with like 30 chips. You each roll a die and whatever you roll, that’s how many chips you put in the middle. Whoever runs out of chips first, wins the round. You can then move onto rolling two dice at once and doing the same thing. Or, you each roll two dice and who ever wins gets to put the difference in the middle (eg you roll a 9 and she rolls a 3 you get to put 6 chips in). It was a simple hame but my kids really did/do enjoy it. If your daughter is a sore loser, like my son, you have one of her stuffed animals play both you. That way you and her are on a “team”. You kind of rig the game so you win most of the time but if you do lose you both lost together and you can try to “beat that dinosaur next time.” Or whatever stuffed animal you’re using. I think the quick pace and rolling dice and the bit of competition kept my kids engaged. And I liked that cards, dice, and poker chips (or especially plastic counters) are cheap. If I think of other things we did I’ll send them your way. At her age, I think, it’s just getting the reps in a fun way. Hope that helps! Oh, play money is great too. Start just ones and fives and bring in other bills as she seems ready. (Those ideas are regarding number sense. I’ll share some games for logical and stragteic thinking in another comment.) #grownostr #education #unschooling #homeschooling #parenting npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress You’re right, it’s already awful. https://www.theintrinsicperspective.com/p/here-lies-the-internet-murdered-by?r=7ew6d&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Reading to your kids is one of the best things about being a parent. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Killing the dad game. And maybe I’m not really sure what I mean. My thought was something like “if unschooling is good - better than traditional schooling - then we would want to be able to export it to as many kids as possible.” However, it seems - and this is where I could be wrong - that very few people (parents) would have the knowledge or the means to unschool. It’s a similar thing with homeschooling. Honestly, with the right parents homeschooling might be better in a lot of ways than sending your kids to public school, for example. But most parents don’t have the means or knowledge to do it, no less do it in a way that yields better results than public school. BUT, I could be missing something. As a teacher for a decade or so I know fair bit about public schooling but I don’t know a lot about unschooling. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Sincere question - can unschooling scale? npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Game theory should be a mandatory part of the high school curriculum. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress I finally finished “In order to live” by Yeonmi Park. She tells her harrowing story of escaping the communist, authoritarian, hellscape that is North Korea. Getting out of North Korea was only the beginning for her and her mother as she had to escape human trafficking while in China, cross the Mongolian desert in the winter in the middle of the night, and face the threat of deportation - and likely execution - back to north Korea at every turn. She’s incredibly courageous for telling her story, both in standing up in the face of threats from the regime and in reckoning with her own inner struggles. I highly recommended this book. If nothing else it made me even more grateful that I was lucky enough to be born in the west. #bookstr https://image.nostr.build/26188e50b72518462753e84bb0bf3832d82f56eaee48bf96a3f19815d616c0c1.jpg npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress 😂 npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress I’ve been thinking about this razor or heuristic in education for a while. It needs a catchy name, but it’s goes something like this. “Every popular trend in education is causing a nontrivial amount of harm.” A corollary to that is that educators must work to decipher and mitigate that harm as well as determine whether the tradeoff is worth it. Another corollary is that groupthink, social pressure to conform, and confirmation bias will make that task difficult. However, if one doesn’t speak out then you risk contributing to pluralistic ignorance, where people recognize a harm but assume everyone else thinks it’s fine because no one individual speaks up. To make matters worse, educators are disproportionately friendly and don’t like “making waves.” #education #teaching #grownostr npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Right?!? npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Remember to turn your clocks forward tonight so that your kids’ sleep patterns can be screwed up for one to two weeks. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress 😂 classic npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress The Other Guys is one of my favorite comedies. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Nice! YouTube for kids is quickly becoming a stream of synthetic content. Much of it now consists of wooden digital characters interacting in short nonsensical clips without continuity or purpose. Toddlers are forced to sit and watch this runoff because no one is paying attention. And the toddlers themselves can’t discern that characters come and go and that the plots don’t make sense and that it’s all just incoherent dream-slop. Zach and I turned in the final revisions of the book in December and we have been busy since then working with web designers to create a website, raising money to support a guerilla art campaign by the artist who designed the cover of the book (more on that soon), organizing friends and allies, getting me set up on Instagram and TikTok (fight fire with fire), doing interviews that will be released after launch, and otherwise gearing up for a campaign to end the phone-based childhood and reinvent the play-based childhood for the 21st century. And I get it. I’m a public school teacher and on many things I will punch right there with you. But I will say that a major problem we have in education is the teacher prep programs. So much of it is useless to future teachers and it forces teachers to bootstrap their own pedagogy and best practices after they’ve graduated. And paid a lot of money for those useless classes. And possibly spent more semesters at college completing the programs. It’s expensive and the ROI is very often just not there. Of course it’s not all bad. But there are many assignments that are essentially busy work. 10 to 15 page lesson plans. Not enough time in classrooms working with *expert* teachers. Not enough time analyzing teaching videos and case studies. Not enough time considering the *practices* of teaching well. Not enough training in cognitive science and what it has to say about teaching and learning. Far too much constructivist philosophy, which is directly related to the lack of focus on cognitive science. And then you throw in super-left activist professors and sometimes whole departments whole departments. Future teachers are starting in the hole and have to dig themselves out while maintaining a more than full-time job that’s exhausting. Now, this is not ALL education departments at EVERY university. I’m speaking in averages. I’m going speak at a university that, as far as I can tell, has a pretty solid department, at least when it comes to math teaching. Every experienced and good teacher needs to do their part in helping young teachers and future teachers get the skill set and mindset they need for long term success. I doubt there are professors reading this, but if so, get your students in classrooms and connected with teachers a much as possible. Help them learn and use the skills of teaching well. If you wanted to teach someone to be a great woodworker you wouldn’t make your primary approach textbooks and obnoxiously long papers. At the end of the day a great paper on woodworking doesn’t mean jack if you can’t build the thing. And it’s the same with teaching. #teaching #education #grownostr npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress We need experts and we need institutions. Although “opposite” implies two possible answer at different ends of a spectrum and it’s not really that. Anyway, he would argue that the FED can’t “print” money. Mostly what gets “printed” ends up on bank balance sheets but doesn’t make it out into the real economy. Are you familiar with his thoughts on this? He had a discussion about this very thing at last year’s Bitcoin conference with @npub1a2c…w83a . npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress I don’t remember struggling with linear algebra too much (although I don’t think I aced it). We need hope or why are we even getting up in the morning. But, my biggest concern is that systemic fragility is increasing and we just keep spinning the roulette wheel. I don’t know how times we can do that. #note1x0c…8uee npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress I love proofs! But, I never took complex analysis. He echoes similar points - essentially cpi is a BS quantity (scalar) when inflation should be represented more like a vector field. It’s like saying the average temperature in the United States is 52 degrees. What does I even do with that information if I live in Montana? A weather map with information dependent on location is a much better description. He discusses it in his most recent conversation with Chris Williamson. If that interests you then I will look for the time stamp. npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Just to be clear, I love teaching math. I get to be around math most days and I love sharing math with my students. I love working with young people and watching them grow. A few of you mentioned that if I love doing math then I should pursue it - and maybe I should! But if it went full throttle into all the stuff I’m passionate about I’d need about a half dozen lifetimes. 😂 I’d spend one getting amazing at guitar. I’d spend one doing math. One teaching math. One backpacking all over the world. And maybe one studying philosophy. Heck, maybe one just bass fishing. #grownostr #note1q0z…r98q npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Reading about elaboration theory this morning. #education #teaching https://image.nostr.build/185019c5d21a01d7bc48d0d7e2c0eb8fbb8d55ec782c99b72c1bb2557d3ceade.jpg npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress Man, I love doing math. I’m making solution guides to every calculus assignment this year and it’s reminding me of how much I love it. Learners spend too much energy (their working memory) searching for solutions or even approaches to get to the solution for them to move anything from working memory to long term memory. https://image.nostr.build/1ad15f4d78ffc07f54dbc9280c68b05b516e63891c882f8bfe0390c2d347d465.jpg npub1n6g4js374378t90rrh4jyeqaqf537ce0qygu79u4r5mgf7qn8hkqk3watk z_cress This is a stubborn misconception about learning that many teachers fully embrace.
